RE: What to Look For when Buying Older TC?

These are a lot of really good things to look for. I wish I would of had this info when I bought our TC. We've been very lucky because all the stuff you said to check before buying has since checked OK. Jim

RE: What's on your pick-up when the campers not?

An aluminium cap that a friend gave me. Mostly to carry ladders on top and to "lock up" tools in the back Jim

RE: Speaking of old, vintage truck campers...

If it were not for my bride "requiring" an inside shower, I would of gone with a smaller unit myself. The amount of "stuff" I never transfered from the 5th to the TC was amazing. There is still open storage room in the TC and I still think we take too much Jim

RE: Atwood Thermostat - need help

Never thought of going to an off the shelf digital. Nothing special so a regular T stat will work? Interesting. Jim

RE: Is it ok to have two

We did have a 5th but it is sold. I never missed it till we were planning a camping trip with our church youth group and I realized we could not sleep an additional 5 kids. Guess we'll take the tent! Jim

RE: TC on a new Dodge halfer?

If you go with the Firestones, I would recommend not using the hardware that comes with the bags and upgrade to a higher grade bolts. I had some issues develop. Also when you install the bags make sure your brakelines on on the outboard side of the hardware. I'll let you figure how I know this! Jim

RE: Winterizing my Lance?

If only to prevent the water from becoming "stale" I would drain it. I drain my fresh water when ever we are not using it. Jim

RE: Airbag line leak!!!

RE: happijac versus torklift versus other?

I went with the torklifts primarly because of attaching to the fram and they appears easier to install. They did go on very easy. Jim

RE: Thinking of getting a camper - some questions

I went from pop ups to 5th and now to a TC. Each has it's advantages and disavantages. As far as mobility especially if you are wanting to tow anything the TC wins in my book. You will need tie down system. Do a little research, get some opinions and make your choice. Depending on what size you go fr a suspension mod may be in order. Just looking at sig lines of forum members will often let you know what is being used. Jim

RE: Sewer hose supprot....

When I was full timing in my 5th I used the plastic gutter and it kept everything going downhill and neat. Cheap too. Jim

RE: Source for increasing rear suspension

Well I found a local spring shop and it was right accross the highway from where I work. I had them add a 60" x 2 1/2" x 3/8 leaf. It raised the rear about 2 1/4". The ride did not seem to cange that much. We will see how the camper sits. Right at $400. They did a nice job. Jim

RE: Sewer/waste water hookup

When I was full timing in my 5th, I'd let the black get about 1/2 to 2/3 full, and if the gray was not at least 1/2 I'd add water. I had sections of gutter holding the drain line to ensure a good slope and I'd let the black drain, then the gray. The 5th had two grays because of the distance between the kitchen and bath Jim

RE: best way to easily take off leer camper shell

I have eye bolts screwed into the ceiling trusses of the garage above the four corners of the cap where I park the truck. My cap has a ladder rack and this is where I lift on the cap. I attach a ratchet type rope winch to each corner and lift the cap off the truck. Once off the truck I have a chain with “S” hooks to secure each corner to the eyebolts and the rack on the cap. Quick and easy. On or off in 5 minutes. Jim

RE: adjustable all steel suspension

Well I stopped at the spring shop and they are going to add a 60"x3/8" leaf to the rear. At that point I may or may not put the air bags back on. We'll see. Jim

RE: Bubble in Roof

It sounds like delamination which should be covered by warrentee. Is it on the roof on on the ceiling? Either way it should be covered Jim

RE: Ford tranny oil change

When you drop the pan all you get is the fluid in the pan. The troque converter lines cooler etc. are still full of old fluid. This is what I do to change the fluid. 1. Run the truck and let the fluid get hot 2. Drain the fluid 3. Drop the pan 4. Remove the line to the cooler (more fluid will come out once the line is vented) 5. Remove and replace the filter 6. Replace the pan. 7. Fill with fluid on stick 8. Attach a piece of tygon (any clear flexable tubing) tubing on the line to the cooler and put the open end in a 5 gallon bucket. 9. Stage several quarts of fluid for rapid filling 10. Have someone start the truck (fluid will start coming out of the tube going into the bucket) 11. Add fluid while watching the color of the fluid going into the bucket through the tubing 12. As soon as you see a color change typically from dark red to bright red turn off the truck and quit filling with fluid. 13. Remove the tubing from the cooler line and reconnect the line to the cooler 14. Start the truck and let the fluid circulate for a minute then turn off the truck 15. Check the level on the stick and fill as needed. 16. Start truck and take through all the gears with your foot on the brake so it does not move. 17. Check the level on the stick and fill as needed. 18. Take for a drive ~ 5 miles 19. Check the level on the stick and fill as needed. 20. Take for a drive long enough to get the trans fluid to operating temperature 21. Check the level on the stick and fill as needed. 22. Check for leaks

RE: Hauling a Truck Camper

Being fairly new to truck campers myself, I have a GMC 2500. I added airbags and the helped quite a bit with the TC. But, I am currently having issues with the airbags and I have removed them and I am going to a spring shop this week to add one or two leaves the spring stack. I may or may not put the air bags back on. My issue with the air bags is the carriage bolts that secured the lower bag mount to the axle loosened even after torqued to the correct spec and allowed the bag to shift on the axle. I am in correspondence with Firestone now. What load range tires do you have. I would recommend at least E’s. Also if your shocks are very old at all, replace them. As far as tie downs, I went with Torklifts on the front and made my own for the back. Do some searches, and a lot of reading and you will get the information you need. If you cannot find a specific answer, ask the question. I have found the folks on this forum to be very knowledgeable and friendly Jim
