RE: Replacing Haldex Air Dryer

I noticed that the threads on the new valve have a red coating, as did the threads I could see on the broken one, so I checked out the Loctite website to check their products. I've used the blue and red products before. On the site, they say the blue product can be used when the bolt has to be removed later using only hand tools, but the red product requires HEAT and tools. I have a small oxy-something torch that can be adjusted to a small, very hot flame, about 1/4 inch long. I applied the flame to the stub of the old valve, being careful not to heat the aluminum. Using a pair of vise-grips, the old valve came right out. Of course I am thrilled because I don't have to completely remove the unit and take it to a machine shop or buy a replacement dryer. Paul

RE: Replacing Haldex Air Dryer

I called Haldex tech support and their recommendation is to take the whole dryer off and take it to a machine shop. The tech also told me to be sure that they don't damage the threads as the new pressure relief valve will leak. I'm open to any other ideas. Paul

Replacing Haldex Air Dryer

Today I decided to replace my Haldex air dryer components. It's a job I've done before with no problems at all and I assumed (foolishly) that it would go as well this time. Unfortunately, when I had to replace the pressure relief valve assembly, the problem began. It requires an 11/16 box wrench or socket and I used a box wrench. It would not budge. Then I used an 11/16 socket and it still wouldn't budge. Finally, I used the socket with a breaker bar and the valve assembly snapped off leaving about a quarter of an inch of the original valve sticking out. Other than completely removing the air dryer and taking it to a machine shop, are there any other ideas? Thanks, Paul

RE: Removing an air line

Thanks for the information. Like some others, I pushed the collar while pulling on the tube and it didn't work. A few minutes ago, I tried pushing the tubs and collar and then pull the tube and I was shocked that it was so easy. Your help saved me a LOT of frustration. Paul

RE: Surge protection

In checking the hard wired PI unit again, I see that it has a bypass switch should you have to bypass the protector, such as because of a failure. So, I guess that's the way I want to go. Thanks for all the help and information, Paul

RE: Surge protection

Giving this a little more thought I was considering the problems one might have with a hard-wired unit. In my case, my portable unit died, but when the power problem was fixed all I had to do was bypass the Surge Guard. If I had a hard-wired unit, it would have been quite a chore to re-wire the system again. Paul

Removing an air line

On my Freightliner chassis I have a data computer with multiple inputs, two are for air pressure. The plastic tubes are inserted into a fittings on the back of the computer and they are the type of fitting where you just insert the tube and you're done. There is a way to remove the tube as I have seen in similar applications. I called Freightliner and was told to push in the outer ring and then pull out the tube. I'm either too stupid to do this or I am terribly inept. Any idea what I may be doing wrong? The frustration level reached the point where I'm done for the day, but I'm prepared to get frustrated again tomorrow. Thanks, Paul

Surge protection

While in Mexico over the winter we were in a campground when there was a problem with the electricity and I was cautioned to unplug from the power. I have a Surge Guard that I had not used and plugged that in and reconnected. The power cut in and out for a couple of hours. The problem was a fallen palm frond touching several uninsulated wires coming into the campground. Several other campers had Surge Guard units as well. One camper without protection woke to the smell of something burning and found their inverter and some wiring was fried. My unit protected me for a while and then died itself. It was the one day I used it but it was out of the one year warranty. Now, I find that there is no repair for the unit, but, as a previous owner, I can buy a new one at a reduced price. Wow! PROGRESSIVE INDUSTRIES also makes surge protection with a lifetime warranty and I guess that's the way to go. Now I have to decide between a portable or permanent mount. My surge guard was portable and I only used it once, but I probably should have used it more. How difficult is it to install a permanent unit? I have some facility working with things electrical but wonder about fitting the unit in and wiring into the existing system. Paul

RE: Columbia Crossing

There are several places on the internet where you can convert coordinates from degrees, minutes, and seconds to decimal and back. Try: http://transition.fcc.gov/mb/audio/bickel/DDDMMSS-decimal.html Paul

RE: Columbia Crossing

Last year, I took the motorhome and one dog through the truck lane as my wife and the other two dogs cleared customs and waited in the heat for over an hour. I'd heard that you can take an RV through the car lane. This year, I stopped prior to entering the US Customs are and walked to the car side and asked what side I should go through. One agent said that if I could fit through the car lane I could do, otherwise, drop off the wife and dogs and take the truck lane. I didn't thing I could make it through the car lane, so the agent said I'd have to take the truck route. I assumed that it was my choice. Walking back, I took a close look at the turn required in the car lane and pulled in there as there was plenty of clearance. The agent who spoke to me before said that I don't follow directions very well as I was SUPPOSED to take the truck lane. I answered that I thought he said that I could come through if I fit. He was arrogant and nasty. We were boarded by agent who works with the dog, but did not have the dog with him. He fell all over our three dogs and gave us an easy inspection. We lost some Mexican meat, our fault. Then the arrogant SOB demanded to inspect the inside and I told him that we already had an agent aboard. When he saw the dog officer he relented. The dog officer left and another agent gave us our Passports and we were off. MUCH BETTER than last year, but the attitude and arrogance of some customs agents is deplorable. I will look further into Bridge #2. Paul

RE: Spill on laptop

The replacement keyboard came in today and it has been installed and the computer runs fine. I was surprised how cheap it was and how easy it was to replace. Paul

RE: Tolls!! Are we autobus or truck

After being "taken" by one toll taker who charged me 200 pesos and gave me a receipt for 153, my wife and I decided that we would not be tricked again. So now we go to the toll booth and tell them what it should be. Now, it's a nice surprise when we give them the correct amount and get change back. We just pay and don't worry too much about the discrepancies. Paul

RE: Spill on laptop

I don't know why this ended up on the Mexico forum, I meant to put it on Technology. Anyway, I'm back in the states and checked with #1 son, who is IT at a bank. He advised removing the ribbon to the keyboard and see if the unit runs correctly using the plug in keyboard. I did and it does. I just ordered a replacement board off Ebay for $11.33, and I think that will do the job. Thanks for all the replies and sorry that I had to wait to get back home to access a good computer. Paul

Spill on laptop

I very foolishly spilled juice on my three year old HP Laptop. In Mexico for an extended vacation I took it to a computer repair and they were able to fix it a little bit. When I brought it in, it would not boot up at all. When I got it back it would boot up and run, but everything is screwed up. Clicking on any desktop icon only brings up a photo editor. I was advised to buy a USB keyboard as there are so many problems with the keys on the computer. It really sucks. I am not only stupid, but ignorant as well. I find similar computers on Ebay for under $200.00 and wonder if it's possible to get one and take the hard drive out of mine and put it in the other one. Thanks, Clumsy aka Paul

Palenque to Puebla

We are starting to prepare for our trip home and will include the ruins of Pelenque. Our next scheduled stop will be Puebla, but it is too far to go in one day. I've been looking through "Church's", but I can't find anything suitable. We're traveling in a 37 foot motorhome, towing a Jeep, and carrying three Labrador Retrievers. Suggestions please. Paul

RE: Buying fuel by liters versus fill-up

Here is what I found after two fill-ups at the local Pemex. They ALWAYS zero and point it out. The price I pay for liters is accurate ie 10 liters at 10.61 pesos/liter is 106.1 pesos. I reset my average MPG on my console and the mileage actually went up from what my average had been. I'm going to consider this issue closed and worry about other things, instead. Paul

RE: Replacement Fresh Water Pump

Dick B, Apparently your wife doesn't use the kitchen sink while you are in the shower.......not that my wife does it deliberately. Generally, she'll turn on the hot water, then I scream, then she shuts the faucet off and says "I'm Sorry". Paul
