RE: Gift idea's

I'll ditto the GPS. My DH loves his and I have to admit it's come in handy over the past couple of years. This year our camper wish list is new camping chairs. We are ready to upgrade from the folding chair in a bag to the nicer lounge chairs. I've got my eye on some at Cabela's. Depending on what camping gear you already have, you can make a long wish list when you first get a new camper. Have fun shopping!

RE: San Antonio Area Campgrounds

Don't know of a park in town to recommend since we live here, but don't camp here. Closest State Park would probably be Blanco State Park. It's on the river and has full hook ups. We have stayed here and loved it!
Wherever you stay try to find the closest link to the bus system. Traffic and parking will be something worth avoiding. VIA is the name of our bus system. We have a couple of locations to park and ride with special express runs to the downtown area. You might keep checking the VIA website for information on a special shuttle on game day.
If you haven't been to San Antonio you'll love our downtown. As with all cities you need to be aware of your location and stay in the main tourist areas (Riverwalk, El Mercado, The Alamo, etc.). We have bicycle police all through downtown and walking tourist information guides called Ambassador Amigos that assist tourists. The Riverwalk should be still lighted for the holidays when you come, so plan at least one evening barge ride.
Enjoy!!

RE: Fire crackers

I've made these several times. I use my tupperware container for marinating. It fits four packages of saltines perfectly. Serve with some ranch dip...yum!!

RE: First timer

I'd like to second the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola. Can't believe I forgot that! It is a must see if you are in the area. The kids will love climbing into all the static displays. This is all indoors, so it would make a great visit on bad weather days.

RE: Question for ladies

Yee Gads...you flush them? Never did that...what a great way to keep plumbers employed :B
Wrap in tp and into the garbage...(I empty twice a day, anyway).
That's my reaction too! I've never flushed them in any camper or stick house. Just wrap in tp and put in trash. We have to empty trash at least once a day...too much odor from food/cooking for us. People are right to warn about pets that might get into trash, it can happen.

RE: Why Would I Want a Bread Machine?

When we first got ours I used it a lot, but now it's only used a couple of times a year. Mostly I use it to mix and let the bread rise. The recipes that I'm making with it require special baking or shapes (like cinnamon rolls), so I don't use the baking option. Never have taken it in the 5er. If you're thinking about getting one you might keep your eyes open at garage sales. I see them all the time along with ice tea makers. Being from the south we love sweet tea, so I've picked up an extra ice tea maker for our camper at a garage sale. Works great!

RE: Opinion on 3 used 5th wheels please.

I agree with a lot of the posts. Make sure you have the headroom in the front master. When we bought there was not a big selection of used 5er with bunks, I wish our master had a higher ceiling. We have a triple bunk, but with the exception of one trip, no one has slept on the bottom bunk. It's just used for storage. A double bed in the bunk area would be great especially as the kids are growing. A slide, as you probably know, is a must. I don't think we could have handled rainy camping trip without that slide. As another poster said make sure you can get to the beds, frig and bathroom when the slides are all in. It's hard to tell how your traveling will be, you may find yourself wanting to stop one night at a Walmart or Flying J. We have been known to leave our slide in at a CG when it's just a one night stop and we have an early morning the next day. Late at night is a bad time to find that you can't sleep in your unit with the slides in. The extras that you spoke about (bike rack, grill, etc.) are nice, but shouldn't override the layout. You can always add the accessories, but never change the layout. Tires are not a real factor, you're going to change them soon enough. Enjoy the search!

RE: Eletrical Outlets Won't Work

We had several outlets go out a couple of year ago all on the same circuit. Checked everything like you and could find no reason for the outage. We finally replaced that GFCI outlet with a new one and then everything worked. I don't know if this helps, but it might be worth a try.
Yeah!!! I guess I win this one! Glad you figured it out. Our outlet was also in the bathroom.

RE: RV Housekeeping/ my favorite addition

Our master bedroom is tight and doesn't have night stands only small narrow closets on either side of the bed. I used one of those over the door clear shoe pockets. Cutting them into two strips with four pockets lined up vertically. This is attached to the inside closet doors. We now have a place to put our glasses for the evening, hand lotion, etc. I also attached some of these type of pockets to the wall of the kids bunks for their small toys and books.

RE: Does anyone use the storage under queen sized bed?

We carry deflated tubes for river/lake trips and boogey boards for ocean ones. Since we don't have a lift system it's pretty hard to get into it too often.

RE: Places to eat in St Augustine, Fl

We went to a local place off A1a S. I think it was called Seafood Kitchen. It was in a strip mall on the west side of the highway and I think there was a used book store in the same strip mall. We also enjoyed Mill Top Tavern in old town.

RE: Touring the Smoky Mountains

I don't know what time of the year you are going, but if it's warm enough you might try river rafting. We were there last summer and our sons really enjoyed a rafting trip. I know it sounds hokey, but the kids also like the walking ghost tour. While we were there we got lucky and saw a Civil War reenactment of the battle of Pigeon Forge.

RE: memphis or nashville?

Tough call! We did both this summer. Memphis has a great downtown area. We were able to park the truck and ride the trolley to everything we wanted to see. We love letting someone else do the driving after we have driven so long to get to a new location. In the summer the water fountains were fun for our boys (10 & 12) to play in. Mud Island is a must see in Memphis. They have a great museum and the outside model of the Mississippi was fun to play in. You take a monorail ride to get to the island to add to the fun. The National Civil Right Museum was very educational and opened a lot of conversations with our kids. If you go I would suggest you go at the pace your kids want to do. If you read everything it will take some time. A great Firefighter Museum is located in downtown Memphis. They have the best children's section I have ever seen in a firefighter museum! Lots of handson! If you're not an Elvis fan then I would skip Graceland. My DH and DS went for me...I just had to see the "King's House"! Of course we had to see the Peabody Hotel marching ducks. My oldest son is into ribs, so you can bet we hit Blues City Cafe and Rendezvous! As for the comments about dangers, I think every city is dangerous if you are out late or get out of the main tourist area. We always make sure we know where we are going and never stay out in a downtown area after dark. It's just good common sense.
In Nashville we found that we spent more time driving. We actually spent very little time in downtown Nashville. Since we are not big Opry fans we skipped that. We did go to the Hermitage and found the audio tour fantastic! Our family loves history so we toured more of the historical sites in neighboring towns. The Carter House in Franklin was one such stop for our family that was very educational!
We enjoyed both cities, but Memphis was my favorite. I think we initially didn't have high expectations for Memphis. It was just a stop to visit as we made our way through Tennessee, but sometimes they say that you get a surprise when you least expect it! I think you'll have fun no matter where you go!

RE: pop up campers

Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone is the only one I can think of. The reason they restricted it to hardsides is because the bears travel in that area to get to the water. Other camping sites in Yellowstone are not in bear popular areas. We didn't see any bears during our stay at FB, but the bison walked through every morning and evening on their way to get a drink. Talking to the folks working the nearby showers and found that bear sightings can be common in the FB area. I didn't see any "ignorant doofuses" at FB. Everyone observed the rules about not leaving food out and putting away your grill. For years the National Parks have worked to keep the bears in a more natural habitat by keeping them away from human food. Compared to my first visit as a kid when visitors would feed the bears to now...I think they are doing a great job!
