RE: Direct TV vs. Dish

Oh, by the way, if Direct doesn't have a receiver comparable to the Hopper, that would be the deciding factor for me.
DirecTV's counterpart to the Hopper is the Genie which is a 5-tuner receiver as opposed to the Hopper's 3 tuners.
X2 Hopper is not even in the same ball park as the Genie.
Mmmm . . . not so fast . . .
Can you receive OTA programming on Genie & record OTA on Genie's DVR?
Can you use a tablet (like an iPad) to view Genie content wirelessly?

RE: Direct TV vs. Dish

Is it true that in-motion satellite dishes can't get HD channels?
DirecTV equipment can NOT get HD using in-motion dishes, but DISH equipment can.

RE: Replacing roof AC units

IF the difference between a 13.5 and a 15 k IS the fan motor (it is not), then why does a 15k compressor pull 1 to 1.5 amps MORE than a 13.5 and the Fan amps are identical for both units??? The compressors and the SIZE of the copper lines are larger on a 15k unit.
Going by Dometic's Penguin II Product Guide, there isn't a 15k version.

RE: Replacing roof AC units

The roof AC units on my 1995 Newmar are original and I'm going to be spending the summer in the CA desert and so I'm thinking of having them replaced.
It's a ducted system and I have 50amp service so what are the more efficient units available these days? I'm thinking that I'll make both of them 15k units with heat pump and heat strip.
I'm guessing you have 13.5k Penguins -- if so, IMO replacing them with the newer Penguin IIs would be a good move.
I replaced my old Penguins with 13.5 Penguin IIs w/heat pumps and the IIs are much better -- quieter and sturdier. Plus, the new digital thermostats are great.
I think the only difference between a 13.5k and 15k unit is the fan -- 15k has a more powerful fan, but I believe both use the same compressor.
Anything special about ducted units or do they all just have a 14"*14" hole to connect to?
Yes and no. If you install the new units, make sure you have the correct gasket between the roof & AC. Newmar or a dealer should know.

RE: Dish Cable Connectors Hot?

Where the RG6 connects to the other RG6 via the coupler, this gets hot. I have noticed this once before.
You might want to replace the coupler with a new one -- preferably a compression type.
Also, is solid copper wire used in your RG6 cable or something else?

RE: Re: Satellite Setup

I wasn't able to see any signal strength reading for 129--and this is on both my RV satellite dish and my home satellite dish.
Sat 129 is where most of the HD programming resides for the Western Arc (110, 119, 129) sats.
So after you tune in 110 & 119 and get the program guide, try selecting an HD program. If you can get it, select the Info (?) button which shows a description of the program + the sat number.
If 129 appears, THEN check the signal strength.
If none of your HD programming is on 129, then get a good tripod (if you don't already have one) and a quality sat meter.

RE: I Phone travel. Verizon, mobile hotspot, apple itunes

We have a 4gig plan right now but I will bump that up when I plan on travel.
Is the Iphone5 on the shared plan I have with verizon, a good method for entertainment and data while on the road?
No, as another poster said, this amount of data will disappear in a few days.
Or should I consider something different for my video instead? Like satellite or another?
Yes, but not satellite. Buy the 3G/4G Novatel MiFi Hotspot from Millenicom. For $70/month you'll get 20GB of data service -- and Millenicom uses the Verizon network.
But even at 20GB, this is really not enough for a lot of movie downloads -- full-length HD is about 5GB per movie and SD 3GB.

RE: > $5K repair for leak; slide gaskets

Wow, I did not do the count before. Think I got it at 11 poor and 3 excellent. Now if that doesn't tell you something....
It doesn't tell me anything. At all.
That only tells me that 14 people entered a review on that site.
They likely had more than 14 unique actual customers yesterday alone. The sample on the internet may or may not (more than likely not) represent anything close to the opinions of their actual customer base.
Or maybe it was 1 person who entered a bad review 14 times or maybe, . . .
The bad reviews + halfing the cost of repairs = Dixie RV doesn't pass the Smell Test.

RE: Replacement Water Filter Cartridge

Would draining the filter best I can, and then storing in a closed zip lock bag, be enough to prevent nasty things from growing in the filter through the winter?
Everpure's filter instructions recommend replacing it at least once a year.
Keeping it longer defeats the whole purpose of the filter.

RE: Cost of RV Satellite package (direct tv/dish)

What is the cost of such a package and is it cancelable after 3/4 months?
I think DISH is your only choice if you want sat service for such a short time.
Odds on favorite is the DISH Tailgater with a Pay-As-You-Go service. You get a portable automatic HD dish. Hubba Hubba.
I don't believe there's a DirecTV counterpart to this.

RE: Exterior bay TV installation

I have a 2007 Country coach. I would like to put a TV in the exterior bay on the passenger side. The bay that has hookups for the TV, power and phone also has a slide out tray.
I tried putting a basement TV on a slideout tray and it tends to be a cable nightmare as you must make provision for cable movement when the tray slides in and out.
I ended up mounting a TV in a compartment that had no tray. Much easier.

RE: Dog watching with Internet Camera

Received my Day/Night CloudCam today & got it hooked up.
Zow! It's running off of a Verizon 4G LTE USB modem (w/o a static IP address) and it's superb!
Installation was very straightforward and the camera's "night vision" is incredible.

RE: New full-timers and satellite

We won't be moving that much, say monthly, so a tripod would work just fine. I think the portability of the tripod is necessary due to the trees as well. So, saying that, can I get HD DVR on one or is it SD on both with DVR on one?
I'll give you a DISH solution . . .
- 1000.2 dish -- this is a three LNB dish that can pick up these DISH sats 110, 119, and 129. Since you will be in the North West, you would use this "Western Arc" setup. (If you were staying on the East Coast, then a different "Eastern Arc" dish.)
- Heavy-duty tripod -- don't go cheap because 3 LNB dishes are heavy and easily blown over. Been there.
- DISH VIP622 or 722 DVR -- this receiver has 2 tuners (one HD & the other SD).
- I'd also suggest a sat meter to assist you in tuning in the 3 satellites.
DISH is pushing VIP211 tuners on RVers. It's a solid HD receiver that can be turned into a DVR by attaching a hard drive to it, but it only has 1 tuner, so two TVs attached to it would have to watch the same program.
