RE: WY to SD on route 16

16 is good. as stated, there's one area that's curvy, but the rest is easy going.

RE: Pets are NOT to be left unattended... what??

If the park rules say "don't leave pets unattended" we don't leave our mutt unattended... or we find some other place without that rule.
I don't think ours barks while we're gone. No one has ever told us if he did.
If I thought he might, I would leave the bark collar on him.. After the first shock, he minds that collar strictly.
Mostly, we take him with us. The only time he gets left is if we have to go somewhere that pets are not allowed, and sometimes, we take him and leave him in the car..he's perfectly content to wait for us while we dine out or even visit friends for awhile.

RE: Dogs welcome in Yellowstone??

dogs are not allowed on trails. you can walk them in the campgrounds and parking lots. if you take them with you while sightseeing, it will get pretty hot in the car, so don't plan on being away from the car more than a few minutes...unless it's a nice, cloudy, rainy day.

well, if it's for a brownie filled with hash, it's not just your ordinary brownie.

RE: West Texas Trip

for the observatory, Davis Mountains State Park is only a few miles away. They have elec, water and dumping station. Make a reservation if you can. They're pretty popular.
at Marfa, don't pass up the chance to see the Marfa Lights...about 7 miles east of town on 90. They have a nice big rest area there and you can spend the night...dry camping...if you want..
At Big Bend, the only full hookup places are at Big Bend RV in Terlingua or the rv park down at Rio Grande Village campground...but the latter is just a small parking lot and can be very crowded with big rigs. The campground next door is shady and nicer and they have water and a dump station, too I think.
If you want to splurge, have dinner or lunch at the Gage Hotel in Marathon on your way out of Big Bend. A bit pricey, but it's a nice old hotel and the food is good.

RE: Unwanted guests, lets hear your story....

well, I think you have to treat this young man like a 10 or 12 year old kid.
when he takes your chair and doesn't give it back, you must tell him that your legs or feet or whatever hurts when you stand too long and he needs to get up and let you sit down again.
when he overstays his welcome, you must simply tell him that it's time for him to leave now... but he can come back tomorrow or day after tomorrow or whatever.
If courteous but direct talk doesn't sink in, you will have to tell his parents.. and after that, the park manager.
It isn't fair to you or your friends to be expected to entertain a stranger just because the stranger doesn't understand socially polite rules of behavior.

RE: West Yellowstone to Red Lodge

if you're just taking the truck, you can do Beartooth Pass to Red Lodge, but it will take some time..that's a beautiful drive, but lots of curves and then a series of switchbacks down the side of a very high mountain.
But you can come back through Cody and go back into Yellowstone from there.
You will need the two days, maybe more if your genealogy research takes more time that you expect.
If you want to read a really good history of Sheridan WY over to Red Lodge..all that high plains country up to Miles City, etc. it's called Where the Rivers Run North, by Sam Morton. Lots of names mentioned in it.

Don't take the Beartooth route.
Sylvan Pass is the route for you to take in your MH
Beartooth is wonderful for a day trip in the Jeep.

RE: Long Hot Showers in an RV?

most people do not "camp" at walmart. they do overnight parking which is like staying all night in a rest area. so you run your genny as much as you need or want to. you do not empty your water waste tanks at these places.

Pueblo has a big super walmart.
here's a page with CO Pike county national forest campgrounds:
http://www.forestcamping.com/dow/rockymtn/pike.htm
you can usually google earth these campgrounds and check them out from a bird's eye view.

RE: washing dishes-is grease and food safe down sink drain?

ditto to paper towels being your best friend. wipe the dirty pans and dishes first, then into a dishpan of soapy water.
we also use a little of whatever we're using in the black tank to cut odors..not every day, but once in awhile.

RE: Who here cooks inside camper or Outside camper?

we cook inside most of the time, but grill a couple times a week.
we haven't fried anything inside. (except for sauteing onions and garlic) we've got one of those microwave bacon cookers and it works right well. also, we bring about 3 lbs of cooked, frozen bacon with us when we first start out, and supplement that with microwaved ham or sausage links.
for frying fish, we use an elec fryer on a table outside. also for fried potatoes.

RE: Long Hot Showers in an RV?

when we find a nice state park with good showers, we indulge in long, hot showers.
or you can do the same in an RV park, and many COE parks have nice bath houses.
for boondocking, you'll probably want more batteries than you have. we tend to use quite a lot of energy. TV, PC, lights, microwave, coffeepot, toaster. So we have some solar panels on top to help keep our battery bank charged up.
Most state and national parks have a "quiet hours" ruling re running generators, but it's not a problem if you have the solar panels.
Now, if you're out in the middle of nowhere, really boondocking, you won't have to worry about running your genny anytime you want or need to.

RE: Where to Stay in Vegas?

we've stayed over on Boulder Highway at Sam's Town RV park. They have a shuttle to the strip. The sites are not big, but some are shaded and it's clean and not as pricey as the Oasis or Circus Circus.
