RE: RT 301

I know many people will go to Fla via North Dakota to avoid Rte 95, but I've found picking the day, date, and time of travel makes all the difference in the world. I've seen too many posts talking about the shopping malls, the traffic lights, the small towns, and the many cross roads to consider Rte 301. However, I do accept that a lot of people really loathe 95 and don't mind the aforementioned conditions on 301. This year we're picking New Year's Day (a Friday of a three-day weekend) to get to Fredericksburg. I'm betting the traffic will be light .... we'll see. Camp on!

RE: Do you stay at the same park every winter, or???

Our first winter, we tried about a dozen campgrounds for a week at a time down the west coast of Fla, into the Keys, up the east coast of Fla, and ended up in Hilton Head SC. We chose a place we liked best to spend a month in for our second year and spent the rest of our three months continuing to look for a better place; we didn't find one. As a result, our third winter (fourth and upcoming as well) have been spent at the same place. Each of us like different venues, campgrounds, activities, climates, and crowds. We found ours by searching all over Fla. IMHO, it's the only way to make sure; and we're exceedingly happy with our choice. Good luck ... camp on!

RE: Places to eat in St Augustine, Fl

I'm amazed no one has mentioned Cap's on the Water! Cross the Vilano Bridge and head north on A1A for about 3 miles. You'll see a sign on the left. It's right on the ICW, and eating on the outside deck brings you back to "old" Florida. Can't wait .... camp on!

Flagstaff ??

Have a chance to look at a new '08 Flagstaff 8528 RLWS by Forest River. Asking price is 32K. We're thinking of moving up from our 25' TT. Any thoughts on layout and/or quality of Flagstaff since I am very much unfamiliar with 5'ers? Thanks for any help?

RE: 9A around Jasksonville FL.

If you happen to be going to St. Augustine, get off 9A onto Butler Blvd east and take A1A south into St. A. It's a much prettier and more relaxing ride. Camp on!

RE: I 95 southbound in South Carolina

They've got 58 days to get it fixed. Otherwise, I'm taking names! Camp on!

RE: St Augustine, Fl

North Beach has the IntraCoastal Waterway and Aunt Kate's restaurant on one end of their grounds and the Atlantic Ocean with The Reef restaurant on the other. You can also walk 1/3 of a mile to Cap's, another restaurant. The grounds offer lots of vegetation; and while the facilities aren't new, they're maintained well. The staff is helpful and pleasant. It is located about 3 miles north of downtown St. Augustine on A1A. Camp on!

RE: Driving in winter

We delayed our departure last year by 24 hrs because of a northeast blizzard on New Year's Eve. By the time we traveled the 1 1/2 miles to the highway on Jan 2, the roads were bare. I wouldn't worry too much about snow; just allow yourself an escape route with an extra day. Camp on!

RE: Claustrophobia in inside cabins on a cruise to Alaska

Balcony ... balcony .... balcony! I wasn't going to pay for one on our Princess Cruise until DW said "I'd rather not go." Since that cruise, we've had three other cruises; and now I'm the one who won't go without a balcony. BTW, the Alaska cruise is spectacular ... Camp on!

RE: Wanting to Buy a 5th Wheel

I could've posted what you did! We're looking at a Rockwood Signature Ultra Light Fifth Wheel 8285WS, which looks great to me. I'll be interested in following the responses you get. Good luck; camp on!

Rockwood Signature Ultra Lite ????

We've been looking at 5'ers with an eye to getting out of our 25' TT into something larger. Their 8285WS looks like something that would fit us. Any comments re the line or that particular model? Thanks for any input. Camp on!

RE: Richmond VA I-95 or I-295

According to Google, it's 5 miles longer on Rte 295 around Richmond than it is on Rte 95 through Richmond. I've done 295 three of the four trips south and have never experienced any trouble with potholes. I've found that route much more relaxing. Each to his/her own ... camp on!

RE: Restaurant for Thanksgiving - St. Augustine, FL

I ended up making a reservation for The Reef, which is on the ocean. Reviews seem to be pretty good and they have a tremendous buffet selection - so now I just hope it is good! Thanks for all the info, J.P. We did their buffet for Easter last year, and it was outstanding ... a tad pricey, but absolutely worth it. Camp on!

RE: Alternative to Americamp near Richmond

We don't leave until two weeks later than you; but after 4 trips trying to find a campground that first night that 1) is open 2) allows us to remained hitched ... and level and 3) is near Rte 95, I've given up. This year we'll make it to Fredericksburg VA and stay in a hotel with a restaurant on their grounds for about $30 more than I've been paying at the campgrounds .... and they have RV/bus parking in a lighted area. Cherry Hill in MD wasn't far enough and too expensive; Prince William in Dumfries VA has sites too short to remain hitched (even for a 25' TT); and the Fredericksburg KOA's sites were so unlevel I had to unhook. Just noticed you were specifically asking about your SECOND NIGHT (sorry about that). We use the Santee State Park in Santee SC for less than $20. Camp on!

RE: Any Low cost RV parks in N. or S. Carolina ???

Santee State Park in Santee SC is clean and an easy drive to/from Rte 95. Last Jan 2 it cost $20/night for water and electric. Camp on!

RE: Sarasota FL.. Campgrounds Your opinion

Although I haven't been in either, I'll try to point you in the right direct. Try rvparkreviews.com AND do a search for both campgrounds on this website. Sorry I couldn't do better, but it looks like you can use a life preserver at this time. Good luck; camp on!

RE: Providence to Fort Lauderdale

By the time you've read all the suggested routes, you'll think you've been at a bingo game! Either you HATE Rte 95 and are willing to drive to Fla via Calif. or you don't mind the traffic and pick your departure day and time to avoid most of it. I leave at 0400 on a Sunday or New Year's Day and take the following route: Rte 287 around NYC because the roads through NYC are a disaster to the Garden State Parkway to the NJ Pike back onto Rte 95. I go west around Baltimore on Rte 695 because there is no toll and the distance west or east is the same. I then take Rte 295 around Richmond (it is little traveled and is only 5 miles longer). I then stay on Rte 95 till Fla. Fredericksburg NC is our first stop around 3 p.m. and our second day takes us to Santee SC. I admit to not minding some buses, trucks, etc around me. Take all suggested routes with a grain of salt since everyone thinks their way is the best (mine is, of course). Camp on!

RE: Tow 5th Wheel Without Hitch

Why not go to your nearest campground, find someone with a 5'er, and tell him "How would you like to make $100 for 10 minutes of work?" Camp on!
