RE: West Texas Trip

Can't comment coming from the east. However, I strongly suggest Lajitas rather staying in Terlingua. A little further from Big Bend but SO MUCH nicer. Make sure you are fully provisioned before heading into the Big Bend area or you will pay dearly in Terlingua. Make sure you have drinking water or a softener 'cause in that part of world you can chew the water! Ft. Davis State Park is one of the most beautiful state parks we've ever seen. You just don't think Texas could look like that. The observatory is a don't miss side trip as is Ft. Davis National Historic Site is unbelievably wonderful. I never was really impressed with Palo Duro. Just my personal opinion. However, I've heard the pageant is good. There again, the water in the area is really not good for drinking, coffee or ice tea. Guess I'm just particular.

RE: US-40 north from I-70 doable in CO?

No problem. Berthoud Pass is steep on both sides. But has passing lanes as mentioned above. The grade will MAKE you take your time. The grade going up Rabbit Ears Pass heading into Steamboat is more gradual. The north side descent is steep. Good road all the way. There always seems to be a lot of slow farm/local traffic in the Kremling area. You did say if you were coming from the west or east on I70. If from the west you might consider 9 at Silverthorne and going up to Hot Sulphur Springs. Beautiful drive and no grades worth mentioning. But I assume that since you home is in TN then you probably are coming from the east. Then do 40. Why Granby? Not much there in my opinion unless you have friends or family. Love Steamboat in the fall.

RE: Same slide shear bolt broke again! Questions for you.

Twice in six years is nothing to worry about, I've done them twice in six DAYS. When replacing the bolt make sure of two things (well 3) One: The condition of the holes.. Need to be round, not oval. Two: The bolt GRADE 8 please Three THe bolt Needs to be long enough that the SMOOTH (Shank) NON threaded portion of the bolt goes all the way through the shaft.. Use washers to build up the siaft size on the nut side so the nut snugs down with the proper torque. DO NOT have any portion of the threads in the shaft or you will be replacing it again,,, SOON. Thanks for the input. Since I'm not taking the MH out until July, I can take my time on this repair.

RE: Same slide shear bolt broke again! Questions for you.

Mite also check and see if the hole is egg shaped have heard this is also hard on the slide bolts. The fix is to re-drill the holes 1 size larger with a larger bolt. Hole is nice and round. Thanks for the suggestion.

RE: Same slide shear bolt broke again! Questions for you.

You may have to increase the shear strength of the bolt. A constant amperage reading will reveal whether or not the slide action is free and correct for the entire length of travel. A sudden increase in motor load amperage is a dead giveaway that stuff is misaligned. Good suggestion on the amps. I'll check the head of the bolt to see what grade it is and see about going up in strength.

Same slide shear bolt broke again! Questions for you.

Same shear bolt broke again. Second time in a little over 6 years on our 2007 HR Endeavor. It is the front bolt on the road side kitchen slide that has the frig, dinette and desk. That slide has to ride up over the tile floor rather than straight in like the other kitchen slide. At least this time in broke in the garage and not out on the road like the first time. Doesn't bind or make unusual noises. When the tech fixed it last time, he took multiple measurements to make sure that it was pulling square. The only possible issue that I can think of is we took the couch out of the slide and replaced it with a much lighter chair, stool and small desk. So, the slide end that keeps shearing the bolt is probably a couple hundred pounds lighter than original configuration. Can't imagine that would be an issue. Would like to hear from any of you HR/Monaco owners about any known issues.

RE: Windshield replacement

About $3000 billed to Progressive last summer to replace the one piece windshield in our 2007 Endeavor.

RE: Protect A Tow for Jeep?

We use Protect A Tow with our Rubicon. Probably towed 10K miles with no damage. Protect A Tow is easy to attach and detach. Storage is easy. IMHO it is pricey for what it must cost to manufacture. You will not be able to find discounted prices on the Internet. All that said I'm happy with the product.

RE: Spring is tiptoing into our life

Yep, it is spring in Buena Vista, Colorado. Had a huge, wet heavy snow this morning at 8200 feet. Snowflakes were the size of a half dollar and made an audible splat when they hit the ground. This snow equaled .61" of rain. Geez, we only get 1.07" in an average May!

RE: Monument Valey Guided Tour Suggestions?

We'll be in Monument Valley for a week over Memorial Day - staying at Gouldings. We know that to see the "good stuff" you need a Navajo guide. Any experiences or suggestions for which of the guided tour operators we should look at? We'd like to see some ruins, and we're not physically able to handle much hiking. Seems like everybody but us has been there. Suggestions? Thanks al Are you really staying for a week in Monument Valley? You only need one full day to see and do everything. That is way too long to stay there. Gouldings is dusty and windy. Read RVparkreviews.com for acccurate information on Gouldings. Yes, you should take the guided tour. Otherwise you can't see many areas up close. I personally would stay in Bluff and use it as a base to explore the area. From Bluff you can see Monument Valley, Valley of the Gods, Mesa Verde, Hovenweep, etc.

RE: Scottsdale, AZ

While snowbirding this winter a friend took us to Chompies in Scottsdale. They advertise themselves as a Jewish New York style deli. Never been to NY but OMG. If this is the kind of food you can get in NY, it would be worth the trip. The place is very crowded and noisey. Lots of back east acents. Super fast service. I'm wasn't a rueben fan until I sampled the DW's! The desert case is packed with what must be a hundred choices of sweets. We went back two more times. The "show" provided by the customers is almost as good as the food.

RE: Truly retiring?s

My best advice is to keep moving however slowly it might be. Because when you stop moving you are an easy target for the first shovel full of dirt. And when they hit you with the first shovel full it is all over. Good luck in whatever decision you make. You can sell your RV, but in your heart, you'll always be an RVer!

RE: Denver, Co. traffic?

EXDenver resident here - just stay on I 70 but try to go thru' after 9:30 AM and before 2:30 PM. Stay in lane 2 (counting from the curb side) to avoid folks merging with you and maintain your speed and you should be OK (barring accidents ahead, that can happen to you on any highway). Bingo! 33 year resident of CO. Above is correct.

RE: Yellowstone/Grand Teton Area Recommendation

Don't stay at Grand Teton Park RV Resort east of Moran. Beautiful views, great location, needs lots of maintenance, very expensive. Read RVparkreviews.com

RE: 2000 Dodge 5.9 Cummins programmer

I had the Edge EZ chip on both my 98.5 and 2003 Cummins towing a heavy HR fiver. Mine was a standard. Loved it. I used the standard setting to save my clutch. The results were amazing. Towed thousands of miles with no problems. Be sure to install an EGT gauge. Otherwise you run the risk of cooking the turbo under hard towing such as I70 west out of Denver. Yes, if you have a high mileage tranny or week tranny, you run the risk of ruining it. However, if you run the standard setting rather than high power, don't do burnouts or street race, you should be ok. Go the Turbodiesel.com for extensive chat on the subject.

RE: Does This Sound Crazy... Water Softener

Pure Flow 8000 or 10000 is a great softener for RVers. Routinely camp in Four Corners where the water in "chewable" because of the minerals. Pure Flow recharges with a box of table salt. Water tastes great. Because salt water doesn't freeze at 32 degrees, you've got less worries about freezing. If in is going to get real cold, I just disconnect it and bring it in for the night.

RE: A warning about your Sleep Number Bed

Been there done that. Did look like a potato chip bag. Also had it happen the other way. Left home at 8200 ft and way down in elevation. Crawled in bed late and found ourselves on a deflated SN. Grabbed the remote to find the battery dead! No spares and too late to go buy one. Very uncomfortable night. Now at the end of a trip or last night out befored heading to elevation we deflated the bed, take out the battery and always make sure we have a spare. Love SN. Have had them for years both at home and in MH.

RE: Nat'l Park senior pass

I read about that this morning. I got my geezer pass almost three years ago. I agree that $10 is too cheap. I would gladly have paid $50 for a lifetime pass. It is a bargin considering how much pleasure our National Parks have given and continue to give me.
