RE: First Trip - Memphis & Nashville: how to split the time

Nashville has a lot to see, especially if you like country music. The Country Music Hall of Fame, The Ryman Auditorium, The Grand Ole Opry (see a show on Fri or Sat), The Parthenon, the Hermitage and of course, all the BBQ joints and music at the bars! Almost forgot the Loveless café!

RE: Alaska advice for someone who's never been there

As others have said, Alaska pretty much shuts down after Labor Day. Most of the tourist attractions shut down then as the workers all head south. August can be a wet month also. We returned in early Sept and didn't have any trouble with fuel and campgrounds. We did stay at some rest areas overnight when we couldn't find a campground. No big deal. Enjoy your trip but start out in July if you can. We didn't take the ferry so I can't comment on that. We did use our toad a lot to explore. I recommend taking it.

RE: Where to stay near McGuire AFB...

Has your son checked to see if he can sponsor you onto the campground? Some bases allow that.

RE: Passport America Lifetime, Thanks all, I'll pass

I have a lifetime membership but bought it about 8 years ago when it was cheaper. We fulltime and it has already saved us more than we paid for it.

Second vote for Lebanon Hills. We stayed there and had a nice time. Not that far from the Mall.

RE: Deviled Egg Recipes

I use the mayo/mustard, salt/pepper combo but I do one more thing. I put the yolks in the food processor and process them until they are very fine. This makes a very smooth mixture to pipe into the whites. Oh, and top with paprika. I started doing it this way when my arthritis make it difficult for me to mix them up. The family loves them.

RE: Supartz

I had them done a couple of years apart. I have RA and the knees were basically destroyed. Tried the clean up/repair on the right one along with the shots but when I finally had the TKR I was sorry I waited so long and wasted time. I was 52 when I had the first one done. I would rather have 20 years or so of no pain then wait until I was older. My left knee wasn't as bad as the right so I waited about 5 years to have it done. I have known many people who have had both knees done. You will need help around home if you have both done. Most of the people I know who had both done at the same time went to a rehab place for awhile instead of going straight home.

RE: Supartz

Yes, I can kneel on my replaced knees. They do feel funny when I do but they don't hurt. If you kneel for gardening or for long times I would recommend a pad under your knees.

RE: Supartz

Why put the knee replacement off? If you need one, get it done! I waited and lived in pain for a number of years before finally having mine done. I was soon kicking myself (with the new knee) for not doing it earlier! Oh, and I was in my early 50's when I had it done. I felt the surgery gave me less pain than the knee did before. I soon had the second one replaced also. Treasa

RE: Tow Car

Suzuki Vitara's are good tow cars. Get a 4x4 and there is nothing you have to change to tow it. We have had one since 2004 and it tows like a dream. The company is no longer making new ones but parts are available. We haven't had any real problems with it and will keep it for a long time to come.

RE: Forwarding Mail ?

The Tok Post Office does accept General Delivery mail. Check their hours on the website (www.usps.com) as their hours are limited. They are also closed on the weekends. Park across the street in the Visitor's Center lot.

RE: Wineguard Road Trip SD

We had one on our 2005 Vectra and it stopped working too. Sometimes it would lock on but not hold the signal, sometimes it wouldn't lock on. Took it to the shop and found many parts that were bad. Model was no longer made, so we got the new Winegard Traveler DirecTV 3005 HD antenna. Much better now.

RE: Something besides banana bread......

I made these the other day. They turned out to be soft and delicious cookies. I substituted Splenda for the sugar and brown sugar so they are almost healthy! -
Peanut Butter Banana Cookies
Ingredients
1 large egg
1/2 cup mashed ripe banana ( approximately 1 banana)
1/2 cup crunchy peanut butter
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
Directions
Preheat oven to 350°F
Spray baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray.
In a large bowl, combine egg, peanut butter, banana, and sugars.
Mix with an electric mixer until smooth.
Add flour, baking soda, and baking powder and continue to mix until well blended.
With a small spoon, scoop out batter and place on baking sheet aproximately 2 inches apart and bake for 10 to 14 minutes until lightly brown.
Remove and transfer cookies to a wire cooling rack.
Prep Time: 5 mins Total Time: 35 mins Serves: 28, Yield:
28 cookies

RE: Photo organizing software recommendations

It might be a better idea to sort your pictures on your hard drive instead of using a software program. That way when you change programs (like from the Kodak software to Picasa) they are already sorted. Just use the software to display and manage the pictures. I store mine by date. When I transfer them from my camera to the PC they go into that dates folder. Then they are "uploaded" to Picasa to label and make any changes I want.

RE: Los Angelas where to stay

There is no such thing as cheap camping in Orange or LA County. You can head out to the Hemet area to get better prices. It is about 60 miles from OC. When your friends get here move in closer. Even Northern San Diego County is expensive.

RE: towing a car

Since the Audi can't be towed 4-down without mods, why not look for an older tow car that is already set up with tow plates and buy that. If it is not your everyday driver it doesn't have to be the best looking or most comfortable. We used to do that until we became fulltimers. Yes, it was a 3rd car we paid insurance on (only liability) but it was older so it wasn't very much.
