RE: EZ Pass

Like 2chiefsRus I have an I-pass but I assume that what I have to say applies to EZ pass as well. We don't use it very often either but it sure is convenient. Other than having to prepay $40 into the "toll bank," I am only out a $10 deposit. To me its worth it.
If the terms for EX pass aren't as friendly, check out I pass. I think they will mail a transponder anywhere. I think Indiana calls theirs I Zoom. It too is compatible and their terms may be better.

RE: hitch instalation

Center of hitch should be over axle. Some prefer an inch or two in front of axle which is OK. If the center of the hitch is behind the axle, you start taking weight off of the front axles which isn't good. This affects handling and could contribute to an overweight condition on the rear axle.
Mine is directly over the axle. Coincidently when I weighed the truck with and without the trailer, the weight on the front axle was the same.
I did tow my fiver 20 miles once with the sliding hitch set back by mistake. I couldn't tell and difference in handling but I wouldn't recommend it.

RE: 7 pin trailer connector vibrating loose

The cover on the female end (truck side) isn't holding enough tension downward onto the male end (trailer). Tape, zip tie, bungee or whatever to keep the cover down will do.
Time to replace the truck side!
My thoughts as well. The sockets I have had came with spring loaded doors to hold the plug in place. Springs get weak and door hinges become too corroded to move freely. Replace, repair, or jury rig the cover to hold it in place.

RE: How long is my RV?

Two truths:
1.) To really know the length you have to measure your trailer or onw just like it.
2.) You would think someone out there would have the same model trailer and would measure theirs. Sadly this hasn't happened though one person came close. (Similar trailer but not 100% sure of length.)

RE: Confused on I Pass and Sun Pass etc--- toll roads ????

Is the Illinois I-Pass good in any other states?
The I-pass is comatible with any of the EZ Pass systems east. I think some states like Indiana have a different name but they all work together. You head West or South (Texas, Oklahoma, Florida come to mind) and the I-pass won't work.
If you only tow a trailer you won't have a problem. I think you need to register its plate as one of the vehicles though, I'm not certain. It gets compiicated for people who tow another vehicle that sometimes they want to take through toll booths on its own, but I don'tthink this is your case. If is is an either/or situation for your tow vehicle and your SUV one transponder will work. Otherwise you might need two.

RE: Replacing stripes and possibly decal

Decals are cheaper and a mobile shop can do it at your house.
This is the route I usually take. I order the decals at my local RV dealer and he arranges for a third party sign shop to come out and install them.

I'm with camperpaul and dbbis. You simply do not have enough capacity in your inverter.

RE: Fifth wheel rails

I believe Reese sells a kit with the correct bolts, size and grade needed. Somebody will probably tell me I'm wrong but I thought their bolts had serrated shoulders to keep them from turning when you tightened the nuts down. Saves trying to get a wrench into a difficult spot.

RE: Dump station questions

. . . But the other dump site was quite a bit different. The concrete pad and sewer hole were contoured and quite deep. Definitely not something you would want to accidentally drive into. I noticed trailers pulling past and then backing up over this fairly deep hole and dumping with no hose. Is this the correct way to use this type of dump station? Are there two different types of dump stations - hose and no hose? What is normally found at state parks? Thanks for your wisdom.
This type of common dump station is pretty common. I can't speak for all states but most of the state parks I visit do it this way, not a drain at every site. The sides slope to catch spills. That said everyone is still supposed to use a hose. A lot cleaner and less messy and stinky. Those that dump without a hose aren't very considerate or smart.

Pardon me, but isn't why we have agents? I would call mine instead of asking a bunch of people who may not even have AAA.

RE: Do you jack up your 5th wheel with the landing gear down?

"Do you jack up your 5th wheel with the landing gear down?" Yes. I know one side gets a lot more weight than the other, but these things do have a margin of error (safety factor) built in.
Just curious... what engineering documents and/or technical specifications for the OP's specific landing gear did you consult before you advised him that his landing gear had a built in safety factor?
I mean come on... We constantly hear about broken frames, blown tires, busted springs and axles etc. Seems to me that safety margin went the way of the dinosaurs.
Out of curiousity I looked at several landing gears. Ratings were between 6500 and 10,000 lbs., for the pair I assume. However taking just half of those numbers is still far greater than my 2.000 pin weight. I would say there is a safety factor in there somewhere.
As for blown tires, bent frames, etc. those are typically the result of dynamic factors, not static loads, two entirely different anumals.
And while I admittedly can't speak for the OP's rig, my response was what I do. Whether or not it applies to him would be his decision, not mine.

RE: Propane Tank Safety Valve Question

This made me curious so I did a little research. According to one document I found, with certain exceptions, it has not been permissible to refill a cylinder under 40 lb. without an OPD since April 2002. My own personal experience is close to this.

RE: Tire Compressor

As Bill alluded to, its not pressure but volume. As you compress air, its volume decreases so you need a bigger compressor, i.e. one that puts out more cfm. You don't need to go all the way to a $1000 one, if I read your post correctly. As a rule of thumb. a good $100 120v compressor should work for you.

RE: 2Questions: diff Amp services & Where do I get a sway bar?

Often overlooked inciscussion of electical service and unclear to some not familiar with electicity is that 20 amp, 30 amp, etcetera, when talking about service are rating of the maximum available, If I am plugged into a 30A, I may be using on 5 or 6 amps, based on what is turn on. In those cases a 20 amp service would work. If I turn on the water heater, toaster, etc., I may be using 25- 26 amps, in which vase the 20 amp breaker would trip but the 30A would be OK.
50A servicee has an extra wrinkle but if you buy the correct commercially made adapter you will be OK. But even though though the pedestal may make 50A available, you TC will limit itself to its 30A rating.

RE: Full tank of Propane=How many days of usage?

It can be a pain but if you want to know how much you use each night for future reference, weigh the bottle. Obviously a full one would weigh 2o punds plus the empty wieght of the bottle, stamped somewhere on the flange. Weigh the container one day, use it one cold night, weigh it again and viola your use per night.

RE: looking for a place to buy new decals.

I got replacment decals at the nearest RV dealer. It wasn't where I got the trailer, so you don't have to go back to where you got your unit. They got them cheap. Well, cheap except for shipping. That was more than the cost of the decals.

RE: Trailer insurance question

I see eight replies, and not a one of you have answered the question that I asked.
It never ceases to amaze me that people will answer a post when they don't have the answer!
Jack L
I think they have the answer, it's just they realize what works for them may not work for you. I.e. there is probably no way my premiums would be representative of what you would pay. Way too many variables. I could tell you my insurance provider (whom I have a good working relationship with) and immediately 6 people would chime in with how lousy it is and all the problems they have had.
In short one size does not fit all.

RE: Replacing shore power cable for plug.

it will have a "Hot" plug inside that cover. If you were to reach in, you'd get electrocuted.:(Please elaborate.
Yes, please do. This is the standard outlet for many a trailer. If done correctly it is perfectly safe.
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. In this case, probably more dangerous than the proposed mod.
