RE: Pet Ramp to get into RV, etc.

Thank you Dixiecflyer for the link to the site for Joint Strong. I took a look at it and asked my Vet this morning about it. He said that for Tucker...because of his thyroid condition and his cushings its something he wouldnt suggest at this time. He said the Metacam is easier on some dogs and on Tucker it appears to be working.

RE: Finally went to the vet

Rita we had an uphill battle with Colitis in our older dog Tucker. After different meds and sleepless nights with worry it was suggested to me to give him a High Fibre Diet dog food and of all things Pumpkin.
Tucker had such bad Colitis that started in July and it has been about a month now with no more diarrhea and blood in his stools.
Tucker now gets Chicken soup for the dog lovers soul Diet dog food. It contains 8% Fibre and along with that he also gets Pumpkin puree mixed in with it. The pumpkin puree is 3% fibre and its all natural. Within 5 days the bloody diarrhea disapeared. His stools are soft and he actually has fewer bowel movements per day where as before he was going every time he went outside.
Thought I would share what i have learned dealing with Colitis in my dog. Now all three of our pups get pumpkin every day and no ill effects on any of them. It might be worth a try.

RE: Pet Ramp to get into RV, etc.

TK we leave for florida a week before christmas and all three of our dogs will be going with us.This year we will be spending 2 months there and coming back in the middle of Feb. Our Tucker is also on pain meds for his joints and the med is called Metacam. It comes in liquid form and can be given on his food with little to no taste so he takes it no problem. Right now we are fighing an ear infection and he has learned to clamp down his jaw so I cant get it open to give him his pills. What we wont do for our pets lol. Its a fight to get him to open his mouth and I use both hands to pry them open while trying to get a pill into his mouth at the same time.
I know what you mean about checking for breathing. I didn't sleep through the night for almost 2 months and kept waking up checking to make sure he was also breathing. My hope for you and your boy is that things will get better soon and he will be back to his normal self. You might want to check into the Metacam for his pain. sure beats pills when they wont take them.

RE: Pet Ramp to get into RV, etc.

We understand your pain in many ways. Our old boy Tucker is 10 yrs old this month and in the last year he has had many issues come about. Last year the week before Christmas he went blind without warning. Just walked into a wall one morning and his pupils were fully dialated. Went to vets and was confirmed he was totally blind. We still took him with us to Florida in March, but we did what we could and ordered a Ramp from Dogramp.com so he would be comfortable going into and out of the Fiver. He loves it as he use's the sides to feel his way up and down the ramp. No steps to climb or fall down.
Then in April he was diagnosed with Cushings Disease and we though ok this is it..he will be in pain and we wouldnt do that to him. So we braced ourselves and when the vet came in and said he could be controled with meds our spirits lifted and we began that treatment on him. HE was also diagnoised with thyroid problems and put on meds for that.
Then in July while on vacation in NH he had to go to the vets on July 4th. Emergency vet visit confirmed that he had colitis. Poor guy was bleeding and needed to go out every 2 hours. When put on those meds he seemed to be doing better and we made it home.
Now you would think ok..thats got to be it but nope..In August after he came home from the vets who groomed him he started to get a bad cough. The cough got worse and worse and we had had it with the vet we were using so changed back to our old vet.
Wadda ya know..he had kennel cough and the only place he could have gotten it was at the vets office when he was being groomed. Ok on meds for that then the vomiting and blood in his stools started . Asked for an Xray and found he has an enlarged heart. Vet said no meds needed for that though, as there is no fluid in his chest or lungs. Thats a plus lol. After more meds and vet visits
and 2 months of worring I learned that Pumpkin is good for a dog with Colitis and also that fibre is also good for colitis. So now Tucker is getting Pumpkin and a high fibre dog food and the colitis has subsided and he has more energy and life in him now.
Like yourself we took our dogs into our hearts and home knowing that it could be expensive as they got older. We also know that time is not on our side with all of his issues but we will continue to do what we can for him as long as he is not in pain and is happy. We got a new puppy in June and the puppy has helped our other dog Sadie stay playful now that she cant play with Tucker and the pup keeps Tucker on his toes.
We know how you feel and knowing that your doing all you can to help your furkid stay healthy and happy is all anyone can ask for.
Good luck with your old guy and enjoy what time you do have left. They still love to be with us even if they cant see or hear us but our love is always felt when they are close to us.

RE: Pictures - Help! Puppies! Latest Photos!

She looks like she could be a golden retriever mixed with a little shepard. She is a pretty mom and the pups are cute as well. I would be very careful in taking her away from the pups to soon as she may not want them back near her again. If she's a first time Mom I really wouldnt worry about the way she looks right now but more about the way she reacts to her babies. She can always have a bath once the pups are a little older and she's more use to them and for that matter you being around her and them. She looks like she would run if she had the chance out or sheer terror so please be extra careful with her.

RE: saber fifth-wheel

We are on our 5th Palomino Product and would buy one again when the time comes. Our next unit will be a Sabre because of the customer service, lack of problems, and floor plans. Love the space of the units the lighter weight and the pricing comes right in the middle for a mid range RV. Have not heard anything Negative about the Sabre.

RE: any glendale titanium owners

It might help if you said what year and model your looking at. As far as if its worth it...all depends on what your looking for in a 5er. If quality then it might be worth it but that depends on the condition of the used unit. IF weight is a concern..look else where as they are pretty heavy.IF warranty is an issue look at new. Check the options on the unit and compare to one of equal quality and go from there. Thats just My Opinion.

RE: Any Sabre (Palamino) owners out there?

This is our 2007 Palomino 829RKS and we love it. The only thing we wish we had was more storage in and under the unit. Tow's easily with our F250 and no problems with it as far as weight.
Love the rear kitchen as it gives more counter space for cooking and preparing foods. Mid living room is good for watching TV and relaxing.
Outside Image of our unit while camping in NY.

Inside of our unit. As you can see seperate area's for cooking, eating and watching TV and just relaxing. Large side windows makes the unit very bright and feels open.

RE: Did the right thing?

It could be the cat was dumped off like a lot of them are. I hope that it will have a good ending and find a home but i'm afraid that its more than likely going to end up like a lot of animals do...being put down. :(
You did the right thing if you could not take it into your home and love it as your own. It's better that it be taken some place to be put down in a kind and quick way than to be hit by a car or starved to death or run down by dogs.
I'm don't own a cat because my husband is allergic to them but have owned many in the past. They do not need much just a little love and attention and food with a dry bed to make a cat happy. Just wish people would see them as a living thing and not a disposable item.
Sorry I couldnt help in easing your pain of calling animal control. but if you find your able to take this cat into your home then you could always go and get it from them and adopt it from the shelter that way everyone is in a win win situation.

RE: Kennel Cough and our Cocker

Thank You for the info on the kibble diet. I really never thought about the water that is lacking in the kibble and how much more it takes out of the dog's body to digest the dry food. I'll do a search as you suggested on a low fat low fiber diet for him.
The other vet had prescribed Science Diet R/D food and that didnt work at all. She then switched him to prescription Purina O/M dry kibble and he has only lost 3lbs in 4 months and thats cutting his food intake to 3/4 cup in the AM and 3/4 cup in the PM.
While in Vermont he was taken to a Vet because he had blood in his stool and it was getting worse. The vet there checked his stool and said she suspected a bacterial problem and put him on Purina double fibre dog kibble and also put him on the Fortiflora and an antibiotic that seems to have helped with that problem.
Again Thank you for your information and I will google and see what is available up here in Ontario for a dog diet foods that aren't dry kibble.

RE: Kennel Cough and our Cocker

A year ago when camping in Florida for a month we noticed that Tucker was having a hard time going down the stairs at night. I took him to the vets in July of last year and had his eye's tested. They did the pressure test and dilated his eye's and after all was said and done was told that he had a normal loss of vision at night. I was told that he could see but it was a little blurred but that they could not detect any cataracts so not to worry. The vet said he was just showing his age and that there was nothing to be concerned about. WRONG!!!!!
Needless to say after his waking up and walking into the wall and the emergency trip to get his eye's checked out I was Not impressed with the vet we were using. His eye's were dilated wide open and would not go back to normal size. The following couple of days his eye's started getting cloudy.
The pupils slowly went back down in size but his sight was gone..totally gone.
I changed vets after they said he had cushings and we are back to our old vet we used before we moved 4 years ago.
The old vet we are once again using said that they should have seen the problems with his eye's back in July and if they had done something about it then he might not have gone blind.
Live and learn at the expense of my dog's eye sight seems wrong to me but I'm not a vet and can only go on what I've been told.
We trust the vet we are using now but to be honest i'm afraid that we will lose Tucker sooner than later and it will absolutely kill me if that happens. He's only 9 years old..10 in Oct and thats not old for a med sized dog. We have always made sure they went to get shots etc every year...nutered and spayed..and a good diet of dog food name brand only.
Sorry I know im rambling now.

RE: Kennel Cough and our Cocker

Thank you for your replies. Tucker is on a product called FortaiFlora to help with his nutritional supplements and it helps restore the balance of good bacteria and boots immune system. He is also now on Metacam but will only be on this for a short time while he's fighting the kennel cough. Tucker at this point is also on Clavaseptin 500mg tabs twice a day for 10 days as an anitibiotic to help with the kennel cough.
This poor old guy is also on Lysodren twice a week for cushings and on Eltrosin 200mg tabs and he takes 2 tabs twice a day for his thyroid.
Not sure if we shuold add any more to his diet right now with everything he's taking but i'm willing to try anything to keep him healthy. The vet said that if his cough gets worse or he starts to vomit then to call them back immediately and they will do X-rays. The problem with them doing X-rays is that Tucker is a lot over weight. He weighs in at 60lbs and thats after being on diet dry dog food for a year. He has always been on the heavy side and in the past year has gained more and more weight so he's on a strict diet of no table food or treats. Talk about a hard thing to do to a dog who is sick but if it keeps him healthy its worth it. The Vet said that because of his weight it would be very hard to see anything in an X-ray with all his fat in his chest area. I've asked and was told that an X-ray might be the next step if he doesn't get any better so we will have to once again wait to see what happens.
Anyways again thanks for your information on Kennel Cough. I was always lead to be believe that they only got sick with it if they were not given the immunizations and were exposed to a sick animal. Seems that they can get it from the air any place at any time and with Tucker's immune being compromised with cushings he can get anything at any time even easier.

Kennel Cough and our Cocker

I am rather new to this part of the forum and have read with interest many post's from the animal lovers on here. I know this is going to be a long post so please bare with me here as i go from the beginning to the present.
I am just going to add a little info I found out the hard way about Kennel Cough.
We have a 9yr old Black cocker spaniel who went blind Christmas week of 2008. We had no advanced warning of his blindness and he woke up one morning and walked into a wall. After an emergency trip to the vets and tests it was determined that he was completely blind no reason given by the vet. We did what any good dog lover does and ordered a ramp for him so he would be able to get into the fiver without any problems. He also learned the layout of the house and fiver in very short order and know's that when we say UP or DOWN there are stairs ahead. Also when told EASY or CAREFUL he slow's right down because he know's he's going to hit something in his path.
Anyways we took him to Florida with us like we had always done and he adjusted just fine. The walks were a little slower but his nose seemed to go into overdrive with all the scents he could now smell.
When we returned home he was tested for Cushing's and was put on Lysodren for Cushings. He's been doing good on the meds with little side effects and no more accidents in the house. He was also put on med's for a thyroid condition.
A couple weeks ago we traveled to Vermont and took the dogs with us as we always do. While there the cocker started having some problems and ended up at the Vets on the 4th of July. After some meds and new food we came home with a dog who was feeling better once again. Then it hit..the coughing fits in the middle of the night and during the day. I took him back to our vet who checked him out and said it wasn't his heart and he could hear nothing in his chest and asked if he had been around any new dogs. Our dog's (3 of them) are always under our control ( ona a leash) and never went near another dog or into anyone else's site.
After 3 weeks of his coughing and it getting worse I took him back once again to the vets and this time the Vet suggested that he has kennel cough. I then informed the vet that our dog's have all the vaccines needed including bordatella nasal vaccine.
This is when I learned that even though they were vaccinated they could still get kennel cough. It seem's that because our cocker's immune system is low due to Cushings he has been diagnosed with Kennel Cough..something I always made sure he was vaccinated against because he goes to the groomers.
After all is said and done our cocker named Tucker is now being treated for something I always been careful to avoid and did everything to make sure he and the other dog's were safe from.
Not sure how many others have come accross this problem but it's out there and even if vacinated they can still get really sick from things they were vacinated aginst.
As for the other 2 dog's we own..they have not gotten sick and we will watch them very carefully for a cough.
Thanks for reading my rant but it upset's me to think that we spend all this money on keeping out pets safe and they still get sick from something they are vaccinated against. Fingers crossed he will come out of this with no ill effects and that the other pups dont get it as well.
We own a 6 month old cocker pup as well as a 5yr old sheltie and they are up to date with all vacinations so keeping our fingers crossed they stay healthy.

RE: crossing border

We live in Ontario but I (Dawn) am American and have family in the US. We travel a lot to the usa with our RV and have only once had them take lemons and once they took our dog food when the beef scare was in full bloom.
We have passports and we carry them with us along with all shot records for our dogs. We have been asked about weapons and alike but do not carry any with us so no problem. They have gone into our RV to check to make sure we aren't bring illegal's back with us and always tell them that the door is unlocked and to go in and look we have no problems in them doing so.
We have crossed in VT, ME, NY, OHIO, MICHIGAN back into Canada and never had a problem.
Now Do NOT carry wood with you into the states. My FIL had fire wood in the back of his truck going to his seasonal in NY from Ontario and was asked if he had anything he was bringing into the states. He said "NO" and the guard looked into the cap of the truck..saw the wood...gave them a piece of paper and sent them BACK into Canada. They went to a rest stop and dumped the wood and went back over the border and went to the same officer and showed him they did not have any more wood and they were told to go ahead and have a nice time.
Not all stories i'm sure are as happy as theirs was but they knew going over that wood was prohibited so we feel no sympathy for them trying to bring some over. If you know the law's and what can and cant come over the border you will have NO PROBLEMS.
PASSPORTS IN HAND... SIMPLE YES AND NO ANSWERS... SMILE AND DONT GET SMART WITH YOUR REPLIES AND YOU SHOULD HAVE NO PROBLEMS.
WELCOME TO CANADA !!! ENJOY YOUR STAY AND COME BACK SOON.

RE: Leaving in camper while gone

To each their own on how to teach a dog not to bark. We have used the Citronella Collar with mixed results on our sheltie. She's a barker and if she see's anything close to our driveway starts barking...that in turns starts the other dog's barking...and us usually yelling at them to stop.
We have done the water bottle trick...spraying the dog when barking...that didnt work. Tried the penny in the can...nope..she only barked louder. Did the command of STOP SIT..AND COME LAY...nope that didnt work either.
So we are now trying to teach our new puppy Mason that barking is not the way to go. When he starts in like the sheltie he's told QUIET..then praised with a Good boy when he stops. The sheltie is the one and only one who we cant shut up not that we haven't tried.
We learned to shut all windows and shades..turn on the TV and AC and not say anything when we leave the RV. No barking in the RV.
Now if we could only teach the sheltie that the house is also an RV maybe she would get the hint. When we leave the house we even go so far as to shut the windows and blind's to keep her from being able to look outside and keep a radio or TV on while gone. Only problem now is when she hears the diesel Car or truck its all bets off and she's off and running to the door...barking like crazy until one of us comes into the house and gives not only her but the other two dogs some attention. Never wanted to try the shock collar but i'm about ready to do so if I cant keep her quiet...she's driving us NUTS!!!

RE: Palomino Thoroughbred 5th wheel

We have owned 5 Palomino Rv's. First one being a popup then went to a TT then went to a Puma Fiver. We then decided on going with the 2006 Thoroughbred 829RK. We had a nice unit until it went back for some repairs at the factory. when it was returned to us it had more problems than when it went in. Seem's that they used a different towing company and the truck they used to transport our unit back to the dealership damaged the frame on our unit causing it to twist and bend. Other than that the fiver looked even better when we got it back with the repairs than when we purchased it new..except for the frame that is lol.
Our dealer called Forest River and 2 day's later we traded the 06 in for the extact same floor plan but in the 2007 model. We would highly recommend the Palomino as they have stood behind their products when we needed minor work done.
The Puma is the low end of the Palomino Market..next being the Thoroughbred being mid level then the sabre being the upper level. All depends on what your looking for in fit and finish as well as price you want to spend.
If you looked at one with water damage and its an 07 then something is really wrong with it that could have been from a previous owner of the unit not taking care of it. Please don't judge by one Fiver but take a good look at others we have been very pleased with our units and the company looks after its customers.
Good luck in what ever brand you purchase and please be aware that the RK..or rear kitchens have a LOWER pin weight then the mid kitchen units.

RE: Can you guess what breed this boy is / A Clan’s Quest

CatandJim
I agree its to easy to fall for the puppy millers online but then again if you answer an add in the newspaper for puppies for sale you dont know what your getting then either.
If my heart hadn't won out over my brain, I would have walked away from the puppy I ended up getting. That is the reason I talked to my vet and gave him all the info he needed to contact the SPCA in the town I got the puppy from.
It sure looks better when a Vet calls the SPCA to report things than it does the average person. A Vet know's when something is wrong or could be wrong and they carry a little more weight when they complain.
We live in Ontario and Pitbulls have been Banned province wide here. If you are found to be breeding a Pit they will take the dog's and destroy them. IF you have a pit mix it must be older than 2 years old and it must wear a muzzle at all times when in the public...no matter if its friendly or not. The pounds here are full of pitbulls and pit mixes and they have to be found homes outside of the area as its illegal to own one here.
IT dont make sense to me and no dog should be muzzled just because it COULD bite...it COULD also save a life if your being attacked by a human....but hey..gotta beware of the 4 legged animals not the 2 legged one's I guess.
Funny how you hear of more people hurt by humans than by dog's..wait..do dog's carry guns and knives?? No but Humans do and we raise these animals to be what they are and teach them how to act so dont blame the dogs..blame the owners.

RE: Can you guess what breed this boy is / A Clan’s Quest

We got a new Cocker spaniel puppy from a website called kijiji.com
They have listed all kinds of pups and dogs. From very small to very very large. Some are given away while others are sold.
I'm lucky I got the puppy I did because when I went to pick him up, I was ready to cry. The smell was really bad and made you sick not to mention the fact the dog's were in small kennels with no food or water.
They had 3 female's in cages and the male also in a cage in the kitchen. One of the female cockers just had a little of 4 puppies the week before and she had little space to move around her babies.
The other dog's had just enough room to sit in the cage's with no soft bedding or comfort of any kind for them. I looked into the corner and saw the 2 pup's the man had for sale and again they were both in the same cage with no food or water. The pup's were covered with urine and stunk really bad but being the person I am I had purchased a blanket for the new puppy and took it along with me.
I had asked the breeder if I could have the mom of the pups lay or sit on the blanket so her scent would be on it, so that it would be a little easier on the pup when i took him home. Kinda like having mom there without really having her there.
Needless to say I did NOT take the blanket inside to have the mom touch it and when we were driving i put the pup ( Mason) on it to keep him comfortable. Even let him drink water from my water bottle because he was so dry. He drank half a bottle of water before I made him stop in fear of him being sick.
I told the vet that we use for our furkids about the situation, and he called the SPCA in the town I purchased the pup in and they were going to look into this...it broke my heart to leave any of the dog's and pups there.
We now have a loving black cocker pup named Mason who is like my little black shadow and follows me every where I go. He has sense gained 5 pounds in a month and has a nice shiny coat and loves his baths and brushings. He also loves all the chew toy's and things he has to play with like frisbee's and balls. He's the little brother to our older Cocker who is now blind and our 5 year old sheltie who now has a playmate and someone to chase.
I know buying from a puppy mill is BAD...but sometimes you just got to follow your heart and save at least one if you can. Our Vet said that he would have done the same thing and that he know's at least one puppy has a loving home. That made me feel a little better.
Good luck on your search and check out K i j i j i. com check in your state and area and see if you find someone in need of your loving home and loving heart.
