RE: wanting to travel down baja to San Quentin for clamming.

Were you aware that it is illegal for a non-citizen of Mexico to take lobster, abalone, clams, mussels, scallops, etc? It says so right on the back of your Mexican fishing license. You do have a Mexican fishing license don't you?

RE: Border wait times!

That back-up south of Santa Ana heading north is for all commerical vehicles and that line is always 5km or longer! Maybe this month they are looking for illegal weapons; they can get more for them in the US right now :(

RE: Mexico online

Of course each one was accompanied by a photo, with links to more photos of that area. The second one was on how to stay safe in Mexico. You know, the usual stuff that anyone with an I.Q. above a grape would consider just common sense. The third one is dedicated to the Monarch Butterfly Reserve. I haven't been able to get that link to work but I'd be willing to bet that I've seen every photo that they've posted. Still better in person!

RE: Palm Springs to Puerto Penasco

I just noticed, you're from Canada. That cancels my border crossing recommendations. I have no idea what you need as far as passport stamps and who gets them, or for that matter, why you need one. I know that whenever I've presented my US passport for stamping, they just either laugh or ignore me completely. Although they do accept it for ID when they are issuing my FMM; but no stamp though. It also sounds like you have something other than the usual tourist FMM. more like a Temporary Resident FMM. But again I didn't know that they stamped into your passport. I thought it was a separate piece of paper.

RE: Mexico online

The first two worked fine for me. The last one got me a can't find error. They all are MSN Travel based pages, the first two show me my local weather and below that, the first of the 10.

RE: Palm Springs to Puerto Penasco

The three main routes would be; 1) I-10 to AZ-85 to Lukeville to RP; 418 miles, 7 hours; or 2) CA-86 to CA-78 to CA-111 to I-8 to AZ-85 to Lukeville to RP; 427 miles, 7 hours; or 3) CA-86 to CA-78 to CA-111 to Mexicali to RP; 362 miles, 7.5 hours. So driving time-wise there isn't much difference, that leaves road condition and border crossing times. The condition of the U.S portion of all three routes is excellent. I can't speak from experience on the condition of Mex-2 between Mexicali and Sonoyta because it's been worked on since I last drove it, but from what I've heard on this forum it appears to be in good shape also. Now comes the tricky part, the border crossing; At both crossings timing is everything. Both are very busy at the beginning and end of weekends and holidays (both U.S and Mexican). The above is assuming that you wait to get your FMM and TIP until after you leave RP. You can get these fairly fast at the Caborca (or where ever they have it this week) station. Another option would be to get them on-line. Of course that's also assuming you can get out of Palm Springs without getting blown off the road. (I'm in Sky Valley right now and we're still getting some stiff gusts):B.

RE: Winds as you come North!

rocmoc, You're in line to get our weather here in Cochella Valley. We have winds of 35-45 mph with gusts up to 80 right now! I thought the coach might roll over! And they are telling us the worst is still to come, the winds are supposed to peak late this afternoon! The extended forecast is for the winds to stay above 20 mph until Tuesday afternoon. And it's starting to warm up a little, it's already into the 90's and triple digits can't be far behind. As soon as my wife gets back from Florida, we're outta here!!

RE: Belgique - Sad

Steve, We are so sad to hear of Daniele’s passing and we send thoughts of comfort as you go through the coming days. Mike and I have fond memories of our visit with you and Daniele at Pelican’s Rest, of your generosity, good conversation and the gourmet supper that Daniele took such care to prepare. We recall stories of Daniele joyfully cooking with the Mexican chefs in their kitchens, and of the happy times you traveled in Mexico. This is how we will remember your loving wife and companion. Warmest Regards, Mike and Robin Dean

RE: Posting a picture

Thanks for the assist Tom, I should have known something was wrong when I didn't get the error msg when I previewed it. So I guess everyone knows how to show photos in the text area of a message now. :) Oh, and if you use the Quick Reply box, you don't have the option of previewing the message BEFORE you submit it.

RE: Posting a picture

That URL is the link you want. The rainbirds just left out 'click on properties', then select and copy the URL. Then follow the previously discussed steps for inserting a photo into the 'Advanced Post Form' And you're right, the blog or website may or may not display the same prompts. The key here is to understand that you are not inserting the photo into your message, you're inserting a LINK to your photo. And that LINK is the URL! To demonstrate this, go back to your previous post and open it again by clicking on the 'Edit' link in the upper right-hand corner of you post. Then add to the front of the URL and to the end. Then click on the preview icon. you should see your photo in place of the URL. This is one of the things that the 'Link'(URL) box does for you, it also allows you to give a name for your shortcut, which it inserts at the end of the URL

RE: Vehicle Deposits

That depends on when you crossed the border going south and when you crossed going north. But I don't think that the Peso changed that much in six months (the approx max time a FMM is good for). There is a penalty if you don't turn in your TIP's in before they expire though. Not sure if there is a penalty for turning in your FMM or not. I do know that you aren't supposed to be able to get another FMM until you clear the previous one, and you may have to pay a fine when you apply for a new one. Question; did you take the monster camper and toad to NZ? If so, how much did that cost and how long did it take. We're also planning on RV'ing Australia and NZ soon.

RE: Posting a picture

BrianSue, I'm the one that told you about the CTRL-V. What I didn't tell you was what it is. It is the keyboard shortcut to the "Paste" function found in the "Edit" menu. The CTRL-C is the shortcut to the "Copy" function. These were the original way to cut and paste. Then someone got smart and created the Clipboard. There is more than one Clipboard. The MS one that comes with Windows is pretty limited. I have a third party clipboard that stores 25 items; and it does the same thing when I try to paste into a forum that is based on the "4UMS" software (which is what RV.Net uses). But I can open the clipboard, select one of the 25 items and use the CTRL-V to paste. I have no idea why; I'd have to dis-assemble the 4UMS to figure that out, and all I care about is that it works.

RE: Border wait times!

Feb 15th, Mexicali, 1600 hrs, 45 min wait in line (with many shopping opportunities ha-ha), no problem at the border. JH Boy, I'd say that over 2 months in line has to be some kind of record!:E

RE: Canceling your 10 year permit changes!

I still don't understand the advantage of a ten year permit. It appears it is always an issue as people sell their rv, it gets totaled, or stolen in the U.S. or Canada. Why not make life easy, since no one knows what will happen tomorrow, and get a one year permit that you cancel each year. qtla, I got my 10 year permit in 2005, when they first came out, and still have a couple of years left on it so I may be wrong on this; but from what I've read/heard is that if you have something that is obviously an RV (such as a 5er or Class A), you don't have the choice between the 10 year and 1 year permit. You get the 10 year, that's it!. Of course that doesn't mean that you can't turn it in every time you leave Mexico and get a new one when you next visit. I was also told that the 10 year permit was originally developed for the Mexicans, not the Tourists, but I can't think of how that would even work. Maybe it has something to do with the legal migrant workers?

RE: Canceling your 10 year permit changes!

I have changed my sticky to reflect the new address and have included a link to my Turtle and Toad website where you can download the new forms from the 'BORDER FAQ' tab. I'm not sure what is going on, but I've had numerous emails from people that have successfully used my downloads to cancel their TIP's.

RE: Towing Sentra with auto transmission

You didn't give enough info to allow a definitive answer, such as year and trim package. But a quick look at Remco Towing Products shows that most of the Nissan products would have to be towed on a trailer.

RE: Diesel fuel prices in Mexico

According to BajaCactus, a member of the BajaNomad forum and who owns a Pemex south of the border area, there are slight regional variations, due primarily to shipping costs. But these are normally not more than a couple of peso's. He's also said that there is a special committee that sets the prices for the border areas. They meet at the beginning of each month. I've never thought to ask who makes up this committee.
