RE: Chalet under new ownership

We dropped the new owners a note to say we were looking forward to meeting them at MATCR. Got a nice personal note back which indicates a real desire for good customer contact. Plus - they actually USE their Chalet on the road.

RE: So what did you do to your Truck Camper today?

Took the winter covers off the Chalet and double checked for any leaks inside. All is well. Forgot to take the smoke alarm battery out when we put it in storage so that was chirping away. Had to go through shin deep snow to get around the sides but it is starting to feel like spring. We did keep the truck path to the camper snow fee.

RE: Moose in New England

Most anywhere in Maine even downtown Portland. Huge bull walked into town a couple of years ago. Game wardens managed to tranquilize it before some stupid person got close and got killed. Local wrecking company sent a flat bed and car winch and off the moose went on a ride further north.
The places mentioned are good spots to see moose. We've also taken a canoe guided trip out of Greenville and wow did we see moose. They were everywhere up in the northwest corner of Moosehead Lake (aptly named). The guide company was Maine Moose Safariand it was worth the bucks.
ANY PLACE in Maine right at sunrise and sunset be careful driving. Deer are more abundant than moose and collisions are astonishingly frequent.

RE: What mistakes have you made that might help others...?

Do not drive across part of the Escalante with your slide out. Had stopped for lunch, merrily got underway and to our horror, a glance in the mirror showed the dinette slide out. This was on the Host so it wasn't out as far as the Chalet would have been. No way to even pull over on the side of the road as there was nothing but drop offs. No apparent damage done except to our heart rate. We now both walk all the way around the camper after a stop.

RE: Lance 1172 vs Chalet TS160

Travelnutz - Not going to respond to your ramblings about the Chalet DS116 since you haven't actually been in one or camped in it. We've put 22,000 miles on ours since April, 2011 and find it comfortable, easy to get in and out of and very user friendly. Each camper finds what works for them. The Chalet DS116 works for us. Yes I'd like it to be lighter and shorter but the trade off is a roomy interior and outside storage space. Until a camper comes along like the Chalet (lighter and shorter) we'll keep putting the miles on this one.

RE: Lance 1172 vs Chalet TS160

All our Chalets are on DRW diesels. No issue with being top heavy though there are times I wish we were six inches shorter. We are overweight on our F350 but we keep an eye on the brakes and the tires and get the truck serviced religiously.
The first year we had the Chalet we made a big trip out on the west coast. We stopped into Chalet to have a few minor issues tweaked. Our model was an early one and the dinette seat towards the rear slide sideways for another person. It rested up on pegs and those were digging into the floor. They changed the pegs to rollers and no more digs. We gave Chalet a list of items we felt should be addressed such as the thermostat being on the wall under the coat hooks. Hang a coat and the thermostat was quite warm (smile). We showed them the use modifications we had made such as adding 2 12 volt outlets, a rail under the TV so items didn't slide off a shelf, a better latch to keep the center TV/wardrobe turntable from moving, book rack, etc. All those mods were made in the next model. The only big issue for us was the back exterior storage compartment was getting wet in heavy rains. Chalet shipped TC Warehouse replacement doors from two that opened sidways to one that opened up. That took care of the leak. As insurance we have since added a rubber flap over the top door hinge. We also gave Chalet some ideas on how to cut back on the camper weight on inside finishes -heavy light covers, that extra dinnete seat. We use the camper a lot and enjoy it.

RE: Lance 1172 vs Chalet TS160

Bed access in Chalet vs. Lane. Chalet has the bed entry at knee height. Lance is more mid thigh. For those of us shorter folk, the Chalet is easy, the Lance needs a step stool.
Check outside storage. Watching the recent web video of the Lance there is a VERY small amount of exterior storage. Chalet has the large rear barn door area plus compartments on the sides.
If you want, you can have six batteries in the Chalet. I think Lance has two.
Yes the Chalet is higher but doubt it is heavier than the Lance. We use our Chalet DS extensively and frequently camp with two others having Chalet triples. Lots of Lances in our group also but we'll stay with the Chalet. Our F350 DRW diesel handles it well.

RE: So what did you do to your Truck Camper today?

Winterized and packed all the "stuff" into plastic tubs with inventory on the lid. It can always come out of hibernation and head south but the cold is here and the TC is safer winterized.

RE: Hello and question on camper windows

Get them. Yes they add a bit of weight but cutting down on condensation alone is worth it. I also think they do help with keeping the camper a lot tighter and warmer.

RE: Freeport Maine rally November 8-11

John - I'm ready also! We moved the camper over by the house this morning and I've been sitting in it all day while Joe watches football (smile). Such a peaceful feeling. I'm trying once again to make piece with the convection oven by baking some bread. That oven is the only thing I don't like in the Chalet and once day may swap it for a regular gas oven.
I think we are all set. We're doing drinks/appetizers as usual on Thursday/Friday afternoon into evening. Potluck on Saturday. We'll have our regular vehicle with us to run folks into town if they don't want to take their camper.
Appreciate the offer but as of now looks like we are set. Mikeeeee is going to come up Wednesday so we can put the tent up early. Weather looks like rain on Thursday but Friday through Sunday are sun and 50s.

RE: Freeport Maine rally November 8-11

Hodag - It does look like 50-52F for Thursday through Sunday. We'll get some rain on Thursday but planning on going over and meet Mikeeee and a couple of others and get the big shelter tent up on Wednesday. 32 rigs now signed up with four of them folks who haven't camped with us before.
Still lots of room for anyone who wants to come. Just email or PM me please so I can plan.

RE: Freeport Maine rally November 8-11

We call it brisk and invigorating not cold or chilly. Last year we lucked out and had upper 50s and low 60s for temps. Have 27 confirmed TCs coming in. I'll still hope for sun.

Freeport Maine rally November 8-11

Who: North-East Truck Campers and friends
What: Fall Dry Camping to close out our camping year
When: Thursday, November 8, 2012 - Sunday, November 11, 2012
Where: Recompence Shore Campground, Wolfe's Neck Farm, Burnett Road, Freeport, Maine
N43° 49.45' W70° 4.47'
Why: To enjoy a late fall gathering by the ocean
Our informal Truck Camper gathering at Recompence Shore Campground, Freeport, Maine is set for Thursday, November 8 - Sunday, November 11, 2012. The views off of the bay front are just spectacular - Maine at its best. The web site is http://www.freeportcamping.com/. This is a total dry camp for those of you wanting to test your solar power and generators. You will be able to run generators occasionally to keep the batteries topped off. There is a dump station by the office and a pit toilet near where we camp.
The campground manager has agreed to a rate of $15 per night ($16.05 with state tax). The campground is closed except for walk ins and those who wish to winter camp. We will have sign in forms at the campsite and will take your check/cash as a group to the manager who lives on site. Do not try to preregister on the campground web site. If your dog comes (they are welcome), bring a copy of your rabies certificate. Dogs must be leashed at all times. We still charge the $10 per rig (not person) fee to cover wood and other expenses.
Recompense Shore is only 5.17 miles from LL Bean plus about 100 shops, pubs, restaurants, etc. in Freeport. We'll do a pot luck on Saturday night and do our usual sharing of drinks and appetizers on Thursday and Friday. Xtreme Campers is sponsoring our group breakfast on Sunday morning. Mikeee has graciously agreed to bring tents and space heaters so we will have a shelter if needed. We will provide firewood. DO NOT bring wood with you as imported wood is no longer allowed in Maine.
There is a detailed map on how to get to the West Bay portion of Recompence on our camping blog at On The Road Again blog
This gathering is low key with no planned seminars. There will be a $5 per ticket raffle with one winner taking the whole New England bag of goodies. We spend lots of time sitting around the campfire, swapping tales of places we've been and want to go. Bring your winter coat and boots as it can get a bit nippy and rain gear in case. We'll keep our fingers crossed for a late Indian Summer.
Beautiful place, good TC friends and any of their camper friends - a great way to close out the North East camping season for most of us.
In order to plan breakfast, please email me if you are coming. More details back to those who email. Hope to see you!

RE: So what did you do to your Truck Camper today?

Doubled checked that the propane tanks were full since we've been keeping the heat on at 45F. Maine's starting to get cold at night. Put few more gallons of fresh water in and checked the water level in the batteries. The TC can act as a source of power if we get clobbered by the approaching storm. Not expecting any problems with the storm but nice to know you have power and heat if needed.

RE: Whazoo's trip of a wifetime, a PDL doc (prettty darn long)

You continue to astonish most of us with your off road TCing. Must have taken a lot for you to actually back down the rock wall your Outfitter seemed to be climbing. Good thing the Jeeps had sense enough to leave rather than laugh at you and get hit with the Wazzanator. Thanks for taking the amount of time to put that trip together and share it.
