RE: Rebuilding my 1981 Sunline 17.5SB

Hey UP, glad to hear the Suuny is working out well for 'ya! Pretty much the same here with the Starcraft. I have the Hilton parked next to the garage, now. Relatives came up for a visit and stayed there for a few days. They loved it. For anybody that wants to know how much a good insulation job helps these older (and probably newer trailers), believe the results posted. Yesterday, I fired up the electric heater inside the TT and within 20 minutes it was 75 f, inside. Outside temp was 22 f and a strong wind. I messed around inside for a little bit and then turned off the heater. Six hours later, after I returned from errands and a little work, the inside temp was still over 40 f. That's about a 5 degree rolloff per hour with no heat source. If I had heated the interior for a few days so that all the fixtures were 75 f, the rolloff would have been less. I'm also liking me some snugness! Yeah, I've gotta' give you a big "Thanks!" and an "atta boy", UP. Thanks for all the ideas and inspiration and atta boy for doing a great job on the Sunline. Wishing you the best! West my friend, how are you doing? Good to know yours turned out well also, I had no doubt it would being the craftsman that you are. Back at ya with the "atta boy" and thanks! The only real heat loss in mine is the windows. Would sure like to eliminate about half of them and change the rest to insulated, but I would need some siding material to do that and make it look decent. Maybe I'll make some foam panels to go over the rear windows in the inside for those frigid camping trips. Even without it was nice and warm inside. Later bro and take care.

RE: Rebuilding my 1981 Sunline 17.5SB

grabbed a hold of this thread, and like a good book could stop reading. Had'ah to find out by turning the pages what'ch did next. I liked the comradely and several of the ideas that you and westend bounced off of each other. Reminds me of some of the jam secessions & mouthing off at each other. that a couple of woodworkers and I share. Read of the character you displayed , U.P.BLDR by admitting that you should have bought the Eternalbond in the first place, instead of letting it slide by ,,,by glossing over the confession with your top's taping pictures . That honesty will show up in your business also, by the way, GOD blessing to you and yours on that very big undertaking !!! All in all, YOU DID VERY GOOD there U.P. BLDR (!!!) by the looks of that beautiful smiling lady sitting there in that picture you'll make a great team pulling together down that road ahead. westend, I was the guy who suggested you build a raised platform for your RV's toilet Thanks for the kind words! It was a rewarding experience rebuilding this old TT, and having Westend doing his at the same time was both fun and a great resource. Had a great year camping in the Sunny. It has served the purpose it was built for very well and everything worked as planned. All the insulation I put in really paid off during bow season hunting this fall. Was in the teens at night but I was toasty warm and used very little gas to keep it to temp. All in all I am very pleased with the outcome. Thanks again!

RE: '71 Starcraft Wanderstar- "The Hilton"

West you sure have done a great job with the Hilton! From one builder to another, I know how much time and effort you've put in and it's no small task. You've got to be pleased with your work. Pressure testing sure is an excellent thing to do. Some of those leaks may have gone unnoticed, until it was too late. I've said it before, with all the insulation we put in our rigs and the interior wraps water infiltration may never be seen and just collect in the walls and floor. I really need to do this to mine just to be sure. Once again Great work brother!

RE: '71 Starcraft Wanderstar- "The Hilton"

Well, the weather has sped up my progress. A frontal line of storms was moving in so I opted to spray the finish (two coats) ahead of the rain. I don't lke to spray over primer that has seen rain. The fiish paint is called "Dorian Grey", kind of a brownish grey, almost military camo. I'm looking for inspiration or suggestions on what I should do for accent colors. Anyone have any ideas? Looks nice West! For accents I would use something dark, like the original lines in your first pic, top and bottom too. I'm not the one to ask about color though, just ask my wife lol. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b7/mowerman_/The%20Hilton/IMG_0001-111.jpg

RE: 1974 17' Great Western

The outlets will only work when your plugged in. That's the way there made. is there a way to mod it to work with the Deep cycle Battery? Only with an inverter connected to the battery and then wired to the 110v panel. The inverter converts 12 volts DC to 110 volts AC. A disconnect, or transfer switch, is also needed so you don't back feed 110v into the inverter when connected to shore power.

RE: '71 Starcraft Wanderstar- "The Hilton"

The devils locker lol! I like the cuts you made top and bottom. I don't know if the old saloon doors were like that but that's the first thing I thought of. And btw...holy moly you even have a saddle in there tex! I'm thinking the Hilton is going to need a more appropriate name, like "The Westend Saloon".

RE: Rebuilding my 1981 Sunline 17.5SB

Just a quick report to note that the Eternabond has done it's job quite nicely. We've had a couple good rains since it's application, and last night was a gullywasher! The leak is gone and all is nice and dry now, the Sunny is happy and so am I.

RE: Removal of ProFlex

Try lifting the end of the proflex so you can get a good grab on it and then start pulling. I recently removed some and it peeled right off 100%. It's very flexible and strong.

RE: Follow-up to my A/C options

A 13 ft TT is small, I honestly can't see needing more than 8000 btu AC to cool it. I cool my whole 2000 sq ft house with a single 8000 btu window unit. I read your other thread and looked through the livinlite website hoping for a pic of the through wall AC unit but could not find one. I've never seen a factory installed through wall AC and am really curious about it's installation. If it's a quality installation, and judging from their work I have no reason to believe otherwise, then I'd be inclined to go that route.

West you are one creative guy and you deserve lots of kudos! You attacked this major project with an end goal in mind, and achieved that goal with great success! I'm sure over the years many will draw wisdom and guidance from this thread and all the hard work you've done. Here's to many happy camping trips to you and her Highness!

RE: 1979 prowler. First camper! Updated!!! Inside Pics!

On another note, when I bought the camper, the guy was afraid to use propane hot water heater so he never plumbed it up. He didn't indicate why but I just realized, it has a propane water heater in it but look at the outside of it, it sure is old/rusty on the outside but sheetmetal casing looks good on the inside. probably the original. anything I should be aware of when trying it out? Make sure there's no holes in the tank! When I bought my Sunline it was a similar situation, the PO said he never used the water heater. It looked good until I pulled it out while working in that area. That's when I found the hole in the bottom. fortunately I had another tank. Hope it isn't the case with yours.

RE: '71 Starcraft Wanderstar- "The Hilton"

Wow West you weren't kidding about the cowboy theme, looks like the wild west in there! I have to admit, at first I wasn't so sure about the gray color of the luan, but now that it's all come together it looks perfect. It has that weathered look, and some of the grain looks like spalting, it just fits so well I couldn't imagine any other color now. You really pulled it off, very nice work my friend!

RE: Rebuilding my 1981 Sunline 17.5SB

You can add me to the Eternabond camp! Can't see how it could ever leak with this stuff on, should've done this the first time. Before I hit the edge trim with Eternabond I took out all those pole barn screws since they had such big heads. I didn't want to have to form the tape around all those, it would've looked awful. I used stainless screws and countersunk them into the trim so the eternabond would sit flat. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/Danceswithtrees/Sunline%20Camper/IMG_1085.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/Danceswithtrees/Sunline%20Camper/IMG_1087.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/Danceswithtrees/Sunline%20Camper/IMG_1088.jpg

RE: '71 Starcraft Wanderstar- "The Hilton"

If I find a Simpson ammeter in my pile I'll send it to you :) That Morningstar would have come in handy in my last two fivers. I ran two battery banks, basically the main bank and a backup battery. I switched them with one of these. http://www.iboatsimages.com/mall/image/view/3/9/8502_0.jpg

RE: '71 Starcraft Wanderstar- "The Hilton"

I'm a big fan of analog gauges and have used them in all my previous campers and still have them in my hunting camp. I also used to put in an ammeter to monitor power usage in and out, although certainly not a necessity, more like watching power meters bounce on my old amp. I would've put meters in my Sunny if I hadn't gotten such a smokin deal on the tri-metric. Like the vintage look too, I still have a pile of old Simpson meters here that I've collected over the years.

RE: '71 Starcraft Wanderstar- "The Hilton"

Kind of artsy fartsy their West, I like it! Fits that opening perfect. Pretty soon I expect to see some nice full shots of the interior, got to be getting close now. I'll be working on mine this weekend since that little leak is still present. I ordered Eternabond and it came in yesterday so hope I can take care of it once and for all.

RE: power ceiling vent

Where can I get one of those switches that changes the speed of the fan? I have a 10"-12 volt radiator fan that fits in the vent perfectly. However, it spins so fast and makes so much noise I can't use it. If I could slow it down, it probably would work good. I used this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/250943378758?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 to convert a single speed fan to variable speed. Take note though, it's rated for 6 amps and your radiator fan may be more than that.

RE: Inside pics

I'll be parting this out. It's from 1976, but well maintained. Everything works. It'll make me a good way to haul 2 Jeeps to Moab. Well, they were Jeeps. Now they're so modified they're hardly recognizeable, let alone road-legal.If I was nearby I'd take the fridge, water heater and AC :) Those rock crawlers are pretty sweet! Are you making a trailer out of the frame to haul them? Before I get too old to ride, I would love to do the 5 miles of hell trail in Moab.
