RE: How do tent people pack?

Why? Family of four road trip & tent camping? Why? I mean, really, why? Obviously your finances are nobody's business but is money that tight that you can't at least take the Trailblazer? It's tough enough staying in hotels with a family of four in a sedan. I can't imagine doing what you're planning. There's no need to. So, again, why? Inquiring minds want to know...

RE: Where to Stay Along the Way: So Cal to Portland, OR

Oh, boy! Do I now feel like a schmuck! Thanks for all the great suggestions. As it turns out, my wife has to report back to work (she's a teacher, well, we both are but I start later in August) on Wednesday July 31st. We can't be in Portland on Sunday and be back home by Tuesday. So all our plans have changed. We may do a similar trip in the future. But, this Summer we’ll likely spend time in Monterey and San Fran the week prior to the MotoGP races at Seca and come home on July 23rd or 24th. To respond to some of you: ReferDog: Thanks. I would not have known that about the 99. WyoTraveler: Rush is a band. And like bikendan said, a very famous one. Just got inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. But, if you’re not much of a Rock fan it’s not a surprise they’ve passed under your radar. rocmoc: Thanks for the Valero tip. That may come in handy. DesertHawk: Although it’s been a number of years since our last Seca trip, we’ve been many times. But, our youngest DD has not. We’ll likely do the Aquarium again and Phil’s sounds good. downtheroad & nina_70: Thanks for the tip on Klamath Falls. In looks nice on the web, but we’ll check out Crater Lake instead if we end up being able to do this trip. Road-Trekker: Many thanks for putting that together! The only thing I’d deviate from is the return trip. I am no stranger to the 101 and would like to come home either on I-5 (Ugh, but we’ve never seen the State Capital) or SH-395. Just so we don’t do the same thing twice.

Where to Stay Along the Way: So Cal to Portland, OR

This July we are travelling from our home in Yucaipa, CA to Laguna Seca Raceway for the MotoGP races (7/19-7/21) and then on to Portland, OR for the Rush concert the following weekend (7/28). Other than those two places and dates we have no itinerary. I would like some suggestions as to where we could stay along the way. We’ve always wanted to spend a couple days in the Eureka area, so we’ll likely not deviate from that. And the Klamath Falls area looks interesting on our way home. Below is a likely route we’ll take. But, the route is not an issue. We can figure that out pretty easily. Where to stay, and where to avoid is the big unknown. Many thanks. http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/4720/summer2013trip.png

RE: Nissan Frontier V6

Hi washie26, Best "First RV" advise you'll ever get: DO NOT shop for an RV to fit your current tow-vehicle. Go out and find the RV that you want, regardless of what truck sits in your garage. You'll almost certainlty get a new truck in the future before you get a new RV. There is no need to "start out small" like so many of us do. Unless of course you WANT a small trailer. And there are good reasons for getting a small trailer. Regardless, buy your dream RV now and then go get a truck to tow it; even if it's used. Check the classifieds, a used 1/2 or 3/4 ton truck can be had cheap, cheap, cheap right now.

RE: affordabl ebattery purchase since I don't dry camp much

The Walmart Group 27 Marine battery will be fine with your described use.Yup! I've been using that exact setup since July 2008 and still going strong. If it's gonna be more than a few weeks between trips I bring the battery home and put it on a trickle charger. A solar charger would be easier I suppose, I've just not gotten around to buying one.

RE: Towing TT without weight bars or sway control

I was always sweating every time I got done hooking up or unhooking. I couldn't agree more. At least up until I lost about 20 lbs. (20 more to go). Now I kind of enjoy "sweating" it a little because I look at it as a bit of exercise, and in general I don't sweat nearly as much as I used to. Otherwise, it sounds like you're ready for a 5'er.

RE: Has anyone used Wise Sales to by a generator?

Bought my second EU2000 and an aux tank in September, 2007. Smooth transaction and shipping. I believe in spending my $$ locally but no one around here would come anywhere near Wise's price. After I got my genny and tank I realized I had mistakenly ordered the tank with a single hose. I meant to buy the dual setup for paralleling. I called them and at no extra charge they sent me the necessary fitting and additional hose; even though it was my fault. I would definitely use them again!

RE: Buying a new generator

For maximum flexibility, nothing beats the paired 2000 watt generators coupled with an extended run tank. Agreed.

RE: Tire replacement strategy -- need advice

Look at all FOUR tires...pick the BEST one to keep as your spare...buy AFTER Christmas, watch for sales, and get tires with the earliest date codes........DennisYup! That's the way to go. We replaced all four tires two summers ago for about $300. There's good reason we've been using the same tire guy for years. So I trusted him when I told him to replace all four and keep the best one for a spare.

RE: Light Weight Travel Trailer

I am of the belief that folks should buy the TT or 5er that best meets their needs and wants. Whether that be an eight foot popup or a forty foot triple slide fifth wheel. Get the RV you want. Don't settle. And then go buy the appropriate vehicle to tow it. A 3/4 ton Suburban can be had very cheap these days.

RE: How do you legally download movies before going on the road

Argue all you want about copyrights but you do know if you kill the goose you lose the golden egg.I'm not sure I'd call "Hollywood" a golden egg... I suspect humanity would get along just fine without Brad Pitt and Eva Longoria.

RE: DirecTV Access Cards

That's too funny. Posters name is Pirate asking about access cards. :)Glad you are easily amused. I don't act like a Pirate, my daughter said I looked like one.My 9 year old daughter says some Harley riders look like pirates! :B http://www.farnorthcoaster.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/riders.jpg

RE: DirecTV Access Cards

I've been with Directv for over a decade. If I want a new box I call them and they send me one. As it is with every legit Directv customer I imagine. The only reason for buying a used box from a private party would be for nefarious purposes I would think.

RE: Hard drive for movies

If you have an iPhone or other smartphone you can load your movies onto that and use an HDMI adapter cable to watch movies. DW and I do that in hotels all the time.

RE: Honda 2000 - Microwave Trips It

High altitude robs ANY normally aspirated gas engine of a LOT of power.About 3% for every 1000' above sea-level I believe.

RE: Paralleling EU2000i

I haven't been paying much attention to generator technology over the last few years but, isnt the Honda EU2000 Companion still limited by a 20A breaker? True, the Companion has a 30A receptacle, but i'm pretty sure it is no different in output than the pre-Companion EU2000's. In other words, you still only get a max 20 Amps. If memory serves, in order to get 30 Amps you need a parallel kit like the expensive one Honda sells or a do-it-yourself kit like so many of us around here have made ourselves.

RE: Battery Powered Fan?

Thanks tp, It's the only picture I have of that tent setup with power and heat. And, ya that particular trip was a good one. It was our annual guys trip in the desert with lots of target practice and a properly administered flag retirement ceremony. And of course there is no shortage of adult beverages and fine cigars. :B

RE: Battery Powered Fan?

IMO, once you reach a point in tent camping where you are bringing more and more creature comforts from home, it makes sense to bring a good power source. A $60 marine/RV battery and $30 inverter from Walmart solve a lot of problems. When not in use the battery sits on my workbench on a trickle charger. http://oi51.tinypic.com/2ep3s0m.jpg height=425 width=320

RE: Roughing It!

I haven't spent a night in a tent since my CO quit making me, so I really don't belong here, and I hope you'll take this in the humorous way it struck me this last week. Here was a guy sitting outside a minimal tent, talking on his cell phone with his laptop literally in his lap. It just looked funny! :D And on the flip side of that are the RV'ers who don't think twice about their refrigerators, hot water heaters, microwaves, flushing toilets, etc. but go ballistic when someone mentions watching tv at the campground. Or even worse, let their kids bring a video game. Perhaps their ancestors chided others for bringing a ball to toss around instead of the pine cones they used to have a catch. Heh-heh.
