RE: You Know You Live in a Small Town When...

I like our small city - a bit of the rural small town mixed in with the conveniences of a city. And where else can you see a limo driving down the road with "Farm Use" tags on it?

Cat getting bald spots

Hi all...
My unlucky 3 year old cat is at it again. A couple of weeks ago, he got into my dog's Rimadyl and had to stay at the vet for activated charcoal treatments and iv fluids. Later bloodwork showed that his kidney functions are normal and he was released from treatment.
Now he's getting some bald spots. He has one on the top of his head, one at the base of his tail, and one on the inner part of one of his front legs.
I plan to call the vet tomorrow, but was wondering if anyone knew what might be causing these - is it, perhaps, a side effect of the charcoal treatment? Or could it be from the stress of his ordeal? Or something completely different?
Thanks!

RE: Its out! (humor)

Yes, it is out! Brand new edition of...
"You might be a Redneck if..."
25. Your working TV sits on top of your non-working TV
My grandparents had two televisions stacked on top of each other - both worked though...kinda. The sound worked on one...the picture worked on the other. Between the two you had one good working tv. Does that mean I'm descended from rednecks? Nevermind...don't answer that. I already know the answer.

RE: Old here, how do I help younger?

It very much depends on the situation. If you are close to the nephew and feel comfortable that he is a decent, worthy person who has found himself in a difficult circumstance, I think it's admirable of you to try to help.
If, however, he does nothing to help himself, that's a completely different story. I'm struggling with that with my own son right now. He just turned 18 and is doing close to nothing (a couple college classes)...and every time I try to set some sort of boundary about what is his responsibility to pay for, my parents turn around and give him money. Just over the weekend, I told him he had to get his oil changed on his truck or park it. He was given two options to earn the money. My parents just gave it to him. Ugh!
Sorry to hijack. Just had to complain. If you're enabling a bad situation, don't help. If your help will truly give him a step up and it's something you want to do, go for it.

RE: Swine Flu Vaccine?

Pawz4me...you make some good points and as I mentioned, H1N1 does seem to be spreading rapidly through our school.
I certainly think precautions are a good idea...that is why my son and I will be getting the vaccine when it's available. But, I'm not of the opinion that the sky is falling.

RE: Swine Flu Vaccine?

My opinion (and you get what you pay for here) is that the H1N1 scare is blown out of proportion. Sadly people are dying. But people die from the seasonal flu too, and I've yet to see any real data showing that H1N1 deaths are greater than seasonal flu deaths. A good chunk of the kids in my school (approx 20%) have been out with it and at least three of the teachers that I work with on a daily basis have had it. In fact, I'm feeling a bit cruddy tonight and hope I don't wake up oinking tomorrow.
It is a flu that has spread rapidly through our school. It wasn't long ago at all that we got the first letter about ONE child who may have it (he did - and he was in one of my classes). Now it's more common. But, these kids are coming back to school a week later just fine. The teachers are coming back even sooner. I asked my friend who is a paramedic if they've seen any unusually bad problems from H1N1 - anything worse than the seasonal flu. He said no.
That being said, since neither my son nor I have ever had a bad reaction to a flu shot, we will be getting the H1N1 vaccine when it is available.

I'd be happy to live on a fixed income like that.

RE: Pressure washer basics ? ...

I'm perfectly happy with my little electric one. And so is everyone who has borrowed it this summer. I've only had it in my posession for two days since May - it's been passed from friend to friend since then.
Will it knock paint off my house from two stories down? Probably not. But for cleaning the deck and the sidewalk, it's perfect.

RE: Dog sweater question?

We left Dewey's sweater on him for over a week - but that was because we were using it to cover some stitches instead of the cone. He sleeps in a crate and even so, there were a few mornings he got up wearing a skirt instead of a sweater. I'd take it off at night.

RE: Do you sew?

Sadly, it's cheaper to buy off the rack than make your own. We do things with a local community theatre and they're having a very hard time finding affordable fabric for their costumes. It's a lost art.

RE: Dabbling with the idea of relocating...

jambo - that sounds fantastic, but I am a little more tied down than that. I have two sons, dogs, cats and a horse. Maybe someday...
I'm hoping that something will come up in my local school system. I've worked with them for 9 years and my current principal would hire me now if he had an opening. Part of me would love to start fresh somewhere else - but another part of me loves being part of this community.

RE: computer & picture disk question????

I had a similar problem. The card reader in my computer would read my old card, but not the new one. I invested a few bucks into a separate card reader (about $10) that plugs into my usb port and it works fine. The new card reader said something about being compatible with all types of cards - so I guess some of the older readers just won't work with the new cards.

Steve - I have a pic almost exactly like that, but mine was taken in South Carolina - at Hunting Island. Not sure which lighthouse yours is.

RE: Dabbling with the idea of relocating...

I'm licensed to teach Prek-6 in VA and TN. I'm thinking about adding some middle school endorsements. In VA, I need only pass the Praxis test in each subject to add 7th & 8th to my elementary licensure.
Sharon - no offense, but I wouldn't come to SoCal anyway. I've been there - beautiful place, but not my cup of tea. From what I've heard, I doubt that a teacher could support a family on a single income there. That's another factor in my decision. I want a place where the cost of living is low enough that I can pay my bills and maybe go out to a movie every once in a while on a teacher's salary.
Thanks for the suggestion of teachers-teachers.com. I'll check that out.

Dabbling with the idea of relocating...

I'm a teacher, but have not been able to find a full-time, permanent teaching position in this area/economy. We have a small population and at least 5 colleges pumping out teachers right and left. My husband and I split up a little over a year ago and I'm faced with the possibility of having no job next school year (the position I have now is stimulus-money temporary).
So, I'm investigating the idea of leaving the area and starting over somewhere where the economy is a little stronger. I understand it's bad everywhere - but even in the best of times, SW Virginia is not a good place to make a living.
I've lived in Northern VA, Las Vegas and Houston. I like small town living better. I don't like humidity, but do enjoy outdoor activities. I like the Northern Nevada, Northern California/Oregon area as far as climate goes, but that's a bit far to be away from my parents who live here.
So tell me the towns/smaller cities you think I'd like and why.

RE: Deuce's story 7/09-10/09 RIP sweet kitty. I miss you so!

I'm so sorry to hear about Deuce. You showed him a side of life he'd never seen and I'm thankful he had that time with you.
My Havoc is a cat who had issues with his neuter too - I posted about it a few years ago on this board. Like you, I still believe, wholeheartedly, that spaying and neutering is the right thing to do.

RE: Go without a water heater?

skipnchar - I've never used the water heater. I traded my Apache (without water heater) for this Nomad and the water heater was toast when I got it. I guess I was wrong in my estimation about shower time. I was just judging by many posts I'd read on here about taking fast navy showers.
I just don't see sinking a ton of money into something I think of as a luxury. I've been camping for years and have never had a water heater. I'm rather pleased with holding tanks, a bed off the ground, and being able to stand upright.

RE: Go without a water heater?

That's my thinking, mockturtle. It's an older camper - I've camped for years and never had a water heater (tent and popup) so I'm used to it. If the one in the Nomad worked, that would be a bonus. I just don't see putting a lot of money into it.
Thanks for the Craigslist links. We'd already called the rv salvage guy. He doesn't have any the size that will fit my camper. I'll measure, but I think the opening in my camper is smaller than the 18X18 one. That's the problem we're having - if it's any bigger than the original, we run into framing issues and would have to move gas lines. Not worth it in my book.
If I could find an affordable tankless one, I'd go that route - but no luck on that front.

Go without a water heater?

The water heater in my '73 Nomad is toast. My boyfriend has been trying his hardest to find an affordable one the same size to fit in the opening for the old one. I told him not to bother. It's a 6-gallon water heater. That will give me what, a 2-minute navy shower? If I can't use the campground's facilities, I see no reason I can't take a quickie cold shower or heat water on the stove for an old-fashioned sponge bath. If I need hot water to cook, I'll heat it on the stove as well.
Am I overlooking anything here?
