Exemplorary GoodSams

Back in the '70s & '80s I use to know of several individuals that took being a GoodSam to the extreme. (and I don't mean club membership.) In northern California, there was the RoadRanger. He patroled California highway 17 from San Jose to Santa Cruz, with RoadRanger on the side of his Ford Ranchero, and helped distresses motorists, free of charge. At first, he had several run-ins with the law, until they realized that his services were completely free of charge. He is credited in his obituary with assisting over 12, 000 motorists in his 10 year career. There was a simular individual in San Diego that went by the name of HighwayMan.
About the same time, there was an older CBer that had a base station somewhere along I-80 above Auburn, California that went by the handle of Snowball on the Blue Mountain base. He spent countless hours on the CB giving travel information, road and weather conditions, chain requirements and accident reports. Being on a base station in the hills, he was often heard from Sacremento to Truckee. I can't recall being on that stretch of road during that time period, that he wasn't on the air.
Does anyone have any information or stories of samaritans that provide simular services today?

RE: Why don't 5th wheel mfgrs place more heavy items in rear?

The placement of the items inside has very little to do with the pin weight. It is where the balance point versus the axle placement that effects it most. If you have a problem with understanding that, let me give you an example. Lets say the given 5th wheel has a total weight of 10K and the pin weight is 2K (20% of total weight). Now add 1K to the rear of the unit. Does that mean the pin weight is now 1K? Since you added it behind the axle (which is not the balance point). No. The total weight is 11K (10 + 1) and the pin weight is now 20% x 11K or 2200 lbs. Sorry, just the nature of the design.
An engineer will be along shortly to point out the inaccuracies in the above post. :)
He rides a bike. Cut him a little slack. :)

RE: I helped an RVer in need, just a little

Back in the '70s, there use to be a guy driving a Ford Ranchero, with RoadRanger printed on the door, who cruised California Hiway 17 between San Jose and Santa Cruz all weekend. It was his hobby to assist motorists. At first he had several run-ins with the law, until they realized that his services were free of charge. The bed of his truck was loaded with gas cans, water cans and a tool box. His story is here: http://snowchains.tripod.com/missionstatement/id1.html
EDIT: The San Diego Highwayman is another. Google him.

RE: circumnavigation of the U.S. via the boundary states

Been to nearly all the states, but not in one trip. US-2 across the top from Michigan to Washington state is great.

RE: bar fridge or cooler

Block ice is the answer. Beer tastes better out of a cooler.

RE: Too much trailer?

A 5.3 with 3.42 gears is not going to be fun in the hills of WV. Pulled a 9k 5er with my 5.7L Hemi for a while but had 3.73 gears and Michigan is relatively flat. I upgraded to a 2500 with a Cummins befor a cross country trip.

RE: bearing buddies

Bearing buddies are typically used on boat trailers for small boats that routinely get backed into the water many times in a season. Those trailers rarely have brakes, so a little leaking grease isn't a concern. Larger boats are typically launched once for the entire season and are less likely to have bearing buddies on their trailers.

RE: Best engine of the year (again)

This needs to be moved out of the TV forum. The Around the Campfire Humor forum is probably more appropriate. My .049 model airplane engine has more HP and torque per litre than anything that Detroit ever built. So what !!!

RE: WALMART STRANGENESS

The OP is right, it is wierd. Setting up camp in a Walmart parking lot and expecting privacy is just plain wierd. People never look at a situation through the eyes of the rest of the world. To a non-RVer, living in a Walmart parking lot must seem a little strange. The OP is lucky that only one person is pulling up and staring. I'm surprised that the sight seer didn't attract others to join him.

RE: I got duped

A friend of mine did that with a Dodge Challenger he had in the 70's, it was a 440 six pack and had 383 badges on it. Blew the doors off many an unsuspecting street racers.
Similarly, a friend of mine put the 327 badges on a 396 Chevelle. Pretty much the same result in the street drags!
Very very common in the '60s and '70s. Every young Chevy owner that had an SS took the badges off and the ones that didn't own an SS put the SS badges on.

There's been rumors of salt being built into GMs for years. Looks like they have finally decided to disguise it a little. :)

RE: What I love about country music.

I find it very difficult, if not nearly impossible, to find any country music on the radio anymore. The "country music" that is being played needs a new genre name as far as I'm concerned because it just ain't country music. There truly has been an awful murder down on music row.
You just need to subscribe to satelite radio.

RE: mice!

Well here's my contribution. We've been camping in an rv since 87, never had a mouse till this trip...We picked up 2 mice at koa near Yosemite; beautiful area. They go inside and found the bread drawer. I went to Home Depot and bought 4 old fashioned mouse traps and placed them in the basement storage bays ( peanut butter bait ). First night caught both. Have left traps in and they travel well. There has not been any evidence of mice since. Cheapest traps did the job.
The mice in the Yosemite area are known to carry a deadly virus. It was in the news big time last summer.

RE: Presumptuous Visitors

I'd meet them with my 12 guage in hand and ask if I could be of any assistance. A private property sign at the enterance to the driveway usually deters unwanted visitors.
