RE: Class A or Class C and Why

Really, it would mostly be just the added basement storage as said above being much larger on a Class A.
The C is just as much a MH as a Class A. In the living area, they both have the same comfort.
Plus, I would think that the Class C might be quieter driving than the Class A. Thats just a guess, I've never driven a Class C.
unless you get a super c on a truck chassis... a class A is much better in everyway including livable space. You cannot town more than 2,000 lbs with a C... they are built on a van chassis so being overloaded is par for the course.

RE: The big 'cut-off'.....

Ya man! This is really irritating. There have been times on a long run where I have passed the same idiot multiple times. I'm going the speed limit or slightly more. He/she passes me, pulls in front and slows down. I'm on cruise control. tap the brakes to come off, wait for a safe opportunity to pass and do so. 10 or 20 minutes later the same idiot passes me and slows down again. I bet truckers have some interesting stories to tell.
um most truckers will be pushing the upper end of the speed limit and not wait around on someone.
Its real simple... you get 3-5 mpg for a few miles and put them behind you. The higher your moving average... the safer you are.

RE: Smaller Class A?

I wouldnt go smaller than a 30' rig. If its a non slide coach... Id make sure it didnt have a fixed dinette and had a nicely positioned couch/love seat to maximize floor space.

RE: Catalytic Converter Stolen

.
NOW THE REALLY BAD NEWS Ford does not stock my converter anymore and neither does the independent suppliers that I have tried here in town and on the web. IF ANYONE HAS ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO GET ONE I'AM ALL EARS IT NEEDS TO FIT A 2000 F53 MOTORHOME WITH THE 6.8 LITER V-10.
The Fords parts man told me that he is receiving long lists of Ford parts everyday that are being discontinued. It looks like Ford's is purging their parts inventory on the older vehicles and making the customer depend on the aftermarket suppliers to pick up the business.
not sure why you would buy that through Ford?? Any muffler shop will have a universal one that will work just as well if not better

RE: Tires for my 2003 Hurricane

I'm pretty much open to anything made in any of the Free World countries. I always specify to my tire guy - nothing made in China. Also do a lot of tire research, both magazine and internet. Last thing I would do is ask a loaded question like that on here, cause you going to end up with the Chevy vs Ford answer, and not necessarily the best tire.
FMCA price seems to be $440/tire installed for the 235/80-22.5 michelins. Got a quote on same size for Toyos... was over $500/tire installed.

RE: Class A coaches driving the speed limit

1st, ya can't fix stupid, 10-45k lbs can't stop fast enough in any situation. A blow out at 70?
Secondly there is no law against driving UNDER the speed limit and there never WILL be! Driving (even slow) on secondary roads is far more dangerous than any 4 lane. The left lane (on a 4 lane)is to pass slower traffic. DAhhhh...
On any road 2 lane or greater... left lane is always for passing. Also there is a law against going under the speed limit (I95 has a minimum speed of 45mph)... the infraction is called "Impeding"

RE: Gas Mileage - Again...

I have a 36' class A with the V10 Ford motor. the coach weighs just under 30,000 and I tow a 4,000 pound toad. Over a year I average 7.5 MPG. Thats uphill down the hill in the wind with the wind. You will have to run a lot of miles to come up with a descent average.
If you use the Gas Generator that will knock you mileage back also.
these things are not cheap to operate, bite the bullet and travel.
See ya down the road
how can a gas coach weigh so much?? Or are you including both vehicles??

RE: New tires - what DOT ok w/you?

um these tires cost a minimum of $300. I want the freshest tire for the price.
Most warehouses are not climate controlled not the mention the tires might travel through a snow belt or sub zero climate enroute to your region.
A local tire shop told me "You will get what the distributor has" when I stipulated that the date codes should not be older than 8 weeks. Ya hello dinosaur tire guy... get with the speed of commerce.

RE: high test gas in motorhomes

Waste of money!
Higher octane fuels are needed to prevent pre-ignition or pinging in a gasoline fueled engine. They do not increase power. Read here
All non-turbocharged engines lose power with increased altitude because less air (oxygen) can be drawn into the cylinders. With less oxygen to be burned with the gas, less power is produced. A properly functioning engine computer will reduce the fuel flow to adjust for the reduced oxygen available.
um forced induction doesn't change the oxygen content. Power is still reduced at elevation regardless of induction.

RE: age of driver

How many teenagers belong on the road, considering that auto accidents are the number 1 killer of this group?
You cannot fault someones age/experience when the State has lowered the bar for skills testing.
A competent driver should be capable of the following:
-Skid correction
-Managing fear reactions
-safely stopping a vehicle where vision is 100% blocked
-dealing with blowouts/sudden mechanicals
-dodging inattentive drivers
-random obstacles
-basic road courtesy higher GVCW = more respect

RE: Buying out of state

Buying a MH out of state may not be such a good idea, here is my story.
I purchased my used motor home in May 2012 in Oregon from a Winnebago dealer. The salesmen and I took it for a test drive where I drove and pointed out a few issues of concern. He said they had not serviced it but would do so and that all would be corrected. After that we came to an agreement as to price. Two and a half days latter I left the lot with my motor home. I immediately noticed that two obvious issues were not fixed but I had to pick my wife up at the airport and get back to work. Before I got home the power steering line blew off and we were stranded (recall not done), I called the dealer who showed little interest. After $3,300 plus in repairs and recall issues taken care of by a Freightliner Service Center and others I have all my original issues taken care of. The RV Corral says I purchased it "as is" and it's my problem. The RV Corral of Eugene Oregon epitomizes the worst of vehicle dealers.
If I had purchased in state they would have been in court in a minute, but those guys are just too far away.
um in reality its kinda your fault for not holding their feet to the fire. You decided the cost savings was more beneficial than the risks. Personally I try to keep things local whenever possible.
Just because you are out of State doesnt mean your rights are diminished... and truth be told Ive sued folks over State lines a few times with some pretty good results.

RE: Craftmanship

Welcome to the world of motorhomes!!
And the answer to your question is NO! Its still cheap this and that...cut any corner you can..etc.
If you want quality built...start in looking at $250,000 and UP
 Yes because price point dictates quality.

RE: Fuel mileage going from TT to Class A

your current truck has a better powerplant than whats available in the gas chassis (and I dislike 7.3s). I would imagine a diesel rig would be a better comparo... especially at higher elevations or climbing grades. Plus a Gas chassis is going to weigh a couple thousand pounds more than your current setup.
If youre doing 20k+/yr... a diesel chassis might be better suited to your needs even with the higher cost

RE: portable generator

you can get a single eu2000 for less than $1000 delivered.
They hold their value for whatever reason. Funny you can buy 2 of them for less than 1 3000 watt model.
Since I already own 2 Eus... I like to use those when hookups arent available.
They are quiet, dont use much fuel and the extended run tank I have lets me finish the weekend (24/7x3)without having to check or refuel them.

RE: Sales and prices rebound

its all relative. I know folks who have gone out and bought late model vehicles... yet are drowning in debt just based on what Ive seen them purchase (house, car, toys, etc) with credit recently.
I am at the point in my life where I probably will not purchase anything used anymore (vehicle wise).
And the reason is only because I want the best condition item in the shortest amount of time. Funny my friends with means are trending just the same. :D

RE: RV Flooring Relative Weights

Only 40 square feet of carpet? )5' x 8')? As Ernie says there can be vast differences in total weight between products and even in similar looking types like a thin vinyl "wood" and 3/4" hardwood. It can be a problem when a motorhome is at or near maximum GVW.
if +/- 50lbs makes a rig overweight... there are bigger fish to fry.
Even in a class C i dont see thick flooring making a difference in curb weight.
Plus the weight is evenly distributed over the rig...so theres that.
