RE: The shape of things to come...

Marketing - Reduce the volume per unit and raise the price, use product placement, advertising and gimmicks. What did I forget? It will sell.

RE: Is this only an Arizona issue ????

It's the same as the groups that run together on the interstate. Even the loneliest rural interstate has groups that run together. I try to place myself in that 4 mile long vacant space in between the groups. I can't understand why they love to run so close together for 100 or more miles. Similar groups appear on loop roads etc.

RE: braking

I never could get the hang of how to adjust the controller and then test it using just the trailer brakes. What I strive for is to have the trailer and truck stop as a unit from any speed. What I do is turn the setting way down so that when the brakes pedal is stepped on I feel the trailer trying to push the truck. Sometimes you can hear the hitch groaning as the trailer surges ahead. I keep turning up the trailer brake adjustment till I feel that the truck and trailer are stopping together. X2 That's the way I do it. I don't want the trailer dragging the truck to a stop nor do I want the trailer pushing. I can tell the difference.

RE: Driver door lock

When I had that happen to one of mine I got a mechanic to swap the passenger side lock with the drivers side lock. Didn't cost a lot, and solved the problem without a bunch of hassle.

RE: Why does the market demand Diesel??

The EPA is working hard to lower the demand for diesels. I have an 08, I would not buy a 13 or 14. The complexity has increased 100 fold.

RE: how does a 5th wheel track compared to TT

The fiver will track very similar to a bumper pull. You will be able to turn tighter than a bumper pull but the trailer is going to take the short cut just like your bumper pull did. On winding roads keeping the truck next to the line on right turns and next to the edge on left turns will keep the trailer tires on the pavement and off the center line. When making 90 degree turns pull forward as far as you can before executing the turn. Plan ahead when you see a turn coming up. Move as far over in your lane as possible away from the direction of your turn before you get to the turn point to give the trailer some room to cut across. It will take some practice if you don't have a lot of experience. So just try to avoid the bad judgement side of that coin. On the highway is where you will notice the difference. I bet that you will be checking the mirrors to see if it's still there. It will pull so smoothly that sometimes you will forget it's there and be surprised when you see it in the mirror.

RE: Hanging the hitch on the pin box?

No Problem !! It's only about 500# of dead weight. If the trailer frame can't handle that it must be made of balsa wood.

RE: Have you ever eaten chipmunk?

Yep, not much white meat but a heckuva drum stick.

RE: New tow vehicle questions

I had the same situation with my '08 Dmax. I got the factory camper mirrors from GM Parts Direct. I saved over $100 from the price the dealer quoted on the mirrors. Next came the installation, and that is when I discovered that not only do you change mirrors, but you have to change the window-mirror control panel on the drivers side door. Then the GM Tech has to update the BCM with a Tech II and make the change in GM's computers to the VIN so that the build sheet is updated. It's a mess. The GM tech that installed the new mirrors didn't know what he was doing and it never worked right. Two years later I had it in at a different dealer for another small problem and just added the mirrors not working as an afterthought. This time it was fixed and now works like it should. Bottom line, it was worth the trouble I went through to get them changed. But if there ever is a next time I will make sure it came from the factory with camper mirrors before I buy it.

RE: Do I need a bearing repack?

I bought the sig 30foot fiver last fall in an end-of-season sale. Doubtless it had been sitting on the dealer's lot for several months by the time I got it. I took on a couple of short local trips then put it up for the winter. This Summer, I plan to do some long-distance cross-country travelling. My question is, do I need to get the bearings repacked this Spring, or is the trailer still new enough I needn't worry about it? I guess its a question of what should determine the need for a repack--time sitting or distance traveled? I've had my trailer for 5 years. It has the EZ Lube axles. Every year I check and usually add about 2 squirts of grease. Last year I considered repacking, but at my age and physical condition I figured it would take me several days to get it done. I worry about trusting some kid at a shop with the job. Eventually I talked myself out of doing it at all, the brakes work well, the wheels turn free. Like others have said, they really should be ok for many thousands of miles.

RE: Getting 2013 1500 Silverado Today, oil consumption questions

Oil consumption? Really? Who told you that? I never noticed it. I have am '04 1500 and a '05 Tahoe. I don't check them very often because they are always at the full mark.

RE: Crossing International border -- Canada to US

DO NOT try to take firearms into Canada. Why not? Go ahead and give it a try. Report back to us on the results. If you declare your firearm to customs they 'might' be willing to issue you a receipt and hold it for you at that customs house until your return trip through the same port. They did for me, as my crossing was a spur of the moment thing. You will have to say "Yes Sir!!" a lot and suffer through a long lecture on Canadian fire arms laws when you surrender it, and when you pick it back up. As for the pets, our current vaccination papers were studied at US Customs and then we were free to go. BTW the US Customs guys thought it was hilarious that I had to surrender my fire arm and then return to pick it up.

RE: Batteries

Expect the new and old to age out together. Replace just one now but in 18 months you may end up replacing both for new. Your call. OTOH, do you even need two batteries? X 2 I get along fine with just one battery, always have. Even spent a week dry camping several times with just one. So do you really NEED 2 batteries?

RE: The new style

I can certainly see why you must keep up with the style. But failing that, you could start a new rage by cutting off some jeans at the knees with scissors and going barefoot. That'll work for mucking out the spring too by the way.

RE: Overweight and insurance

If you are negligent or overweight or drunk or otherwise mentally impaired your insurance still covers you. That is why we buy it. If it didn't cover you for those things I wouldn't even spend my money on it.

RE: 401k or 457

Whichever one you choose, fund it to the max and never ever take a loan or an early withdrawal. The penalty is there for a purpose, to keep you from buying a new RV or a boat with it. The actual penalty is far greater than the 10% because the missing money does not gain any value for you over time. My DW insisted we do it that way and now I am glad we did.

RE: OLM & Change Intervals

If your running a full syn oil I sure as hell would not change it at 5000 miles no matter what the OM says. We run full syn in the wife's 200 3.6 and I will run it out to 10,000 miles send a sample out every oil change and see Chrysler in court if a issue comes up. Changing oil at 5000 if running full syn is a waste of money and resources. Don I agree, and that's why I don't run a synthetic. I'm going to change my oil at 5000 mile intervals no matter what I use. It just doesn't feel right to go any longer. Synthetic may last longer but I don't think the sludge buildup is any slower.

RE: Which Truck?

Toyota Tundra can pull 165,000 lbs. Now beat that !! And don't tell me about the rating. It obviously means nothing, even to Toyota.Tundra pulls Space Shuttle
