LOVE the shorter rigs. Will need to figure out how to have permanent sleep arrangements without climbing over each other all night for bathroom trips.

I like the 24 LD quite well. It's the right length and closest to the length of the Unity. Like the beds way in the back. But, with beds made up for permanent bedroom (we would want to do this), there's no dinette. An early riser has no place to hang out, eat breakfast, do computer work etc. Otherwise, it would be perfect.

We love the layout and build quality of the Leisure Van Unity 24tb (or 24IB), permanent easily accessed (not corner) bed(s), plus dedicated dinette, no slides (our preference), 2 separate 'living areas' (bedroom in the rear and kitchen/dinette up front) and huge exterior storage. BUT, we are not at all interested in a sprinter chassis. Would love to find the unity floor plan (or similar functionality) on a ford - keeping the length at about 25 feet. Phoenix comes close, but not quite. I keep looking at the new 2014 floor plans as they roll out. Forever hopeful!

Isn't there also a safety issue here? I can see it now - position a block, drive up, re-evaluate, need to lift another wheel, back up, position blocks under two wheels, drive up, just the right amount, not too much, not too little, reevaluate, more adjustments, backing up, block re-positioning, driving forward etc. No thinks, sign me up for the levelers.

The Thor 22 on a Chevy is the same length as the Unity 24IB or tb. The bed configuration on the Unity is much nicer for people who do not want to climb over each other during the night for a bathroom run. I get the feeling that manufacturers can't do a Unity type floor plan on a Ford or Chevy and keep under 25 feet.

I think the Leisure U24TB has it all over any Roadtrek. Unity has the 'big' three - dedicated bedroom (without crawling over each other), dry bath, dedicated dinette area. Plus larger holding tanks and huge exterior storage. They seem so different as to be not even the same category of vehicle. Am I missing something?

Does it make sense to dispose of TP in a small trash bag (dispose daily/as needed) a la European style? Then the paper doesn't go into the black tank at all.

Totally agree on the slide. We don't want one. They are heavy (reducing CCC), subject to failure and leakage. We're travelers more than campers and would hate to be stuck in a location waiting to unscramble a broke slide. I'm sure when we graduate to a style of camping that keeps us in one spot for longer stretches, then slide(s) make sense.

Thanks for the replies. We are interested in a relatively small'footprint', and ease of travel. We have identified a couple class C's and 5th wheels, that would meet the living requirements - all in the 25 foot range. I'm assuming a small fiver is pulled by not a monster truck. We will buy to 'match' proper size truck. Class A and travel trailer are out of the running. I'm hearing that backing up is a real problem with C/toad - a negative for that combo. The fiver leaves me with a hurky high mpg day trip vehicle - a negative for that combo. Any other negatives and positives?

What's easier - C with toad or 5th wheel

Please tell me your thoughts on which set-up would be easier and more 'nimble', meaning driveability, maneuverability, and speed/ease of camp set-up and break-down, hitching / unhitching etc. Class B+ or C with a toad, or small 5th wheel? We tend to move around a lot - only staying someplace a few days at a time, but wanting to day trip when we are in a place. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

I'd like to hear from OP why the switch from 5th wheel to C/toad combo. We're trying to choose between the two. either way it's a hitching/unhitching fire drill. What's the gain?

Whoa! That's BIG going down the road. I need to be smaller. You all have convinced me to tow - OK I got that. I'm thinking the only way to figure out the suitable camper size is to make a list of items we'd take - size and weight, then caculate storage needs based on that. Now I know what I can do during our upcoming long winter nights !
I can see that the daily gear shifting back and forth from toad would be less esential in remote/secure locations.

Funny. I grew up with a Cub, then a Comanchee. Was fun then. Today I'm a ground hound.
Does total length of a rig matter? It must for manuverability and 'shoehorning'. How about a 450chassis B+ plus a 4WD beater Jeep (or similar)for daytripping?
I'm not crazy about the height on the 5er, but could get over it.

Thank you all for your input, and especially the pictures. The roadside campsites are beautiful ! You've given us much to consider - including re-thinking some of the options that we had previously ruled out. It seems that almost no matter what, we'll be towing - either a FW, trailer or toad. We'd not previously considered the flexibility afforded by having two vehicles, the the A/toad or B+or C/toad combos. If we went that route, we could jettison the toad for local trips when we don't need it, then drag it along for trips where we would need it. That makes some sense to me. I spent 73 days in a conversion van with a pop-up and two pre-teens. It was a great trip, but any configuration with indoor plumbing will be positively luxurious!

Why is that?
We DO want to do the Denali Highway. It was my original thinking that a set-up with fewer axles would manage the washboard roads better than my experience with a trailer that suffered porpoising on rough roads. That might be a non-issue with FW.
Regarding storage - we'd like the rig we purchae to work for subsequent state-side travels. Those trips would include dragging one set of golf clubs around. So, the rig needs some space for that without storing them in the shower and moving them every day. That's primarily why we ruled out truck camper.

Sue - you bring up a point I hadn't considered - going in different directions (one staying at campsite with rig - the other taking off for adventure or errand). If we're in a B+/C that wouldn't be possible. Hmmmm. I didn't like the 'tail wagging the dog' feel of a trailer (and all the anti-sway-bar, chains, pigtails etc). I generalized that discomfort to include 5th wheel. Maybe we ned to re-think that. Love this forum.

Caney - you ask good questions. Funny on the B&B. NOT going to do that! If we get a B+/C, I thought we use the rig for day tripping. Is that painful? We would have all our gear (change clothes, clean shoes, food, photography, fishing etc) right with us - not needing to shuttle that junk back and forth from unit to day vehicle. We'd snag food, propane, dumping stations etc 'along the way'. I was anticipating a unit w/ solar to charge the house batteries. We'd use campground elec if we're in one, otherwise we'll be crazy conservative on elec use. Our needs are pretty basic. Good reminder on the 4 season rig. Our search started with truck campers, but when we went to Hershey show and saw them, we felt there wasn't enough storage. Hence the 're-think' into B+/C or whatever. Is total length a limiter? Like on ferries and various campsites. Towing (anything) creates limitations in gas stations, parking lots etc, and then there's the backing up thing. We've towed before - not afraid if it. I just thought that a self-contained would be easier, all around. Maybe not.

Best rig ? Need opinions.

We're planning on spending a 'season' in Alaska (May until too cold) and will be purchasing a rig (likely new) for that and subsequent trips. We've ruled out Class A. We like the B+ or small C in the 25 foot range, but also want to consider trailer/5th wheel. We want to be 'nimble', making navigation and driving lesser traveled roads relatively easy. Our travel pattern is to be out and about all day, and settle in for the evening. We'd like the set-up/break-down to be easy. So, the problem is that some folks tell us that the B+/C won't be 'nimble' enough, and that we will want a toad for day-tripping. If we go that route, why not a trailer or 5th wheel? But then that gets into the longer length and the whole production of attaching/detaching. I'm so confused. I would love to hear from people regarding the rigs they have taken to Alaska - what worked, what didn't and any recommendations for us. What would you have done if you were starting from scratch on such a trip? Thanks ! :)
