RE: Rockwood Roo 17 Floor Project

That's an awesome price for sure. Lol
Did I read that right? A tarp under the trailer? Why?
What kind of floor are you planning on putting down?
If I ever have to redo our floor (hope I never do though) we are going to put in something to make it look like wood floors. I doubt you can put real wood down but not positive.
Good luck with the project and keep updating when you can.

RE: Starcraft HTT newbie

I have not done many mods to ours yet.
Added shelves to the two big cabinets, changed thermostat to digital, and made the tandem axle wheel chocks.
Wizfisher: Do you have pics of the shelves you added? We want to add shelving to our pantry-like cupboard for clothing, but aren't quite sure what we want to do yet.
Thanks!
I do not have pictures right now but will take a pic in the next few days. Just depends on what time I get home from work. Just got home and am getting ready to eat.

RE: Starcraft HTT newbie

Our furnace had some issue where if it rained a certain way, water would get in and drip out of the front of the furnace and that ruined the dinette back (closest to the fridge) which was repaired under warranty.
Anyway, we were getting ready for a trip to north GA and it was going to be in the 30's and 40's.
Went to test the furnace for the first time and it didn't work. I was upset and going to bring it back in to be fixed when I decided to check something. I was able to turn the furnace on and off by manually touching the contacts in the thermostat.
Since I was going to change to a digital thermostat anyway, I just changed it and it works perfectly.
Don't know if the thermostat was just bad or something happened when they did the warranty work but at this point it doesn't matter.
Changing it out was really easy. Took me about 15 minutes and about 10 of those minutes were thinking of where to put the 2 wires and reading the manual about programming. I hate electricity (I did pull fuse) and always get nervous.

RE: Starcraft HTT newbie

We have a 2012 229TB and love it.
We have 3 daughters (13, 6, and 2) and are very comfortable when "stuck" inside at night, during rain, etc.
I have not done many mods to ours yet.
Added shelves to the two big cabinets, changed thermostat to digital, and made the tandem axle wheel chocks.

RE: Warm enough?

We camped in north Georgia two weeks ago when the cold front rolled through.
High during the day (Thursday and Friday) was in the mid to upper 40's.
Lows for a few nights was, upper 30's to low 40's.
Turned on a ceramic heater to take the chill out. The furnace was then set to 70.
The furnace would kick on about every 30 minutes to an hour for about 5 minutes at a time.
We kept plenty warm and could have gotten it really hot in there if we wanted.

RE: Warm enough?

You enjoy seeing someone wreck their trailer in an accident??????
Every summer weekend i see half ton headlights spotting for raccoons.....
Lol, too funny.
Actually a good sign for a vehicle being overloaded.....the headlights looking at the tops of trees.

RE: Warm enough?

Thank you for the input! I have a friend telling me I am rediculous to worry about the weight at all. Sigh.
What I really want is the Roo21DK, but I doubt we would be able to pay for it if we found it! : ) I have to check on the weight of that.
Way too many people do not pay attention to cargo capacity, which when adding weight to vehicle will reduce amount of weight able to be towed.
I know of a family that was towing a bigger hybrid with a Suburban. Larger family. Not fat, they are tall and look fit for their size. 3 kids and a friend when they got into an accident.
Traveling through GA a semi came up beside them and passed them. The wind pushed them slightly off the road and they ended up rolling. Thankfully nobody was hurt.
In my opinion, with their family, gear, tongue went, etc. I believe they might have been exceeding their cargo capacity. I could be wrong too, just my guess.
A friend at work asked me why I didn't get a 1/2 ton truck to pull our hybrid.
I explained that there are 5 of us and the kids are not getting smaller, 5 bikes, a cooler with extra drinks, chairs, fire wood, cornhole boards, etc. in the truck before adding the 500+ pounds of tongue weight.
His response was...... Oh, I never pay attention to that, I just hook up whatever I want to tow and go.

RE: Warm enough?

Car Guy, that 232 is REALLY nice. If I had a bigger TV I might even consider trading my 17Z in for that model!
Jayco doesn't build the 232 anymore. They have added a similar floor plan (I can't remember the number) but with a slide out dinette. The hard time I have with it is by adding the slide out, they eliminated a wonderful floor to ceiling Wardrope AND pantry cabinets. For a gain of what, maybe 18" of floor between the dinette and the sofa? And the gain of hitch weight from the slide out ahead of the axles?
I did pull the 232 with V-8 Explorer, and it pulled ok, although in stiff cross winds it was a little like the tail wagging the dog. I would definely reccommend the trailer though for nice layout, low step in height (no slide) and roominess.
The Starcraft Travelstar 229TB is very similar to your Jayco 232. Starcraft and Jayco are the same.
No slide, wardrobe, pantry, u-dinette, and somehow still leaving a good amount of floor space.

RE: Warm enough?

I posted a question in folding trailers too....
I am in CA but I am a big baby and don't like to be cold. Will a hybrid be a lot better for cold weather than a pop up tent trailer?
I worry about damaging the "main" part of the trailer with the open parts?
I have 4 growing boys that love to camp and a Mommy who likes her comfort. : )
Thanks for the advice!
Julie
Since you are not asking about a travel trailer, lets just answer your question of comparing a Popup to a hybrid, a hybrid will stay warmer. Less canvas for heat to escape and more solid roof and floor to help retain heat.
I have owned both and am heading to North GA this weekend where the highs (Thursday) will be in the 40's and the lows Thursday and Friday) will be in the low 40's.
The furnace will keep us plenty warm.
Don't know what damage you are talking about to the "main" part.
A hybrid is a travel trailer with fold out beds. The beds are built to support 1000 (or more) pounds each and unless you are a big family and all pile into one bunk, it would be hard to do any damage.

RE: HTT for family of 5 - Starcraft 229TB, or Shamrock/Roo 233S?

Bikendan is dead on about towing..now about the dinette... my 2000 Palomino has the U-shape dinette. We are a family of 5 and a medium dog. We used the dinette once to play Yahtzee. We eat outside under the awning on short trips or an EZ pop up canopy for longer trips (a week or so). It's nice, but getting in and out of the bunk requires stepping all over the cushions not to mention what you or a child will be stepping on if you have it down into a the bed and someones sleeping in it. Just my 2 cents...oh and the table is kept outside next to my outdoor stove. We do dishes on it and it holds the strainer so they can dry.
Scott
The U-shaped dinette on the 229TB is not in the way of the front bunk and you do not have to climb over/on it to access the bunk.
We have 3 children also (13, 6, and 2) and fit very comfortably in the dinette. We have had 5 adults sitting at one time and while it wasn't the roomiest situation, it did work.
One of the things I am going to be adding is a table extension to put on the table between the dinette and the couch. This will then add 2 seats to the table and can be folded or removed while not in use. Biggest negative will be getting into the seats while that table is on. Kids will have to work their way around the seats, lol.
Even though the 229TB does not have a slide, there is quite a bit of space for the kids to play on the floor in the "kitchen" area.
It all boils down to your preference. Check both models out and see what you and your family are most comfortable in.
Some like the slide, some don't. Some models have more storage and counter space.
Spend an hour or more inside the camper when looking at them. You really get a feel for how it is to be "stuck" in one if it was raining and you couldn't get outside.

RE: Booked Fort Wilderness Campground at Disney.....

Living about 30 minutes from Magic Kingdom (less to the other Disney parks), I have a hard time justifying the expense to stay at Fort Wilderness.
I have been there a few times when we lived in South Florida though and it is a great park.
A couple of our friends had birthday parties there for their kids. They would rent a site or two and have the party on the site. Kids would also swim in the pool, fish the little lakes and canals, ride around on golf carts, campfire with Chip and Dale, etc.
It's a great campground and you and your kids will have a great time.

RE: X Chock

I have a couple of the plastic chocks from when we had the pop up.
The were moved to the hybrid and still get used.
I also made the wood block chock things. Sorry, don't know what they are called, lol. The two pieces of wood between the dual axles/wheels tightened with a long threaded rod between the two pieces of wood.
There are a few pictures in the mod thread of some that other members made. They really make a big difference.

RE: Hybrid for a family of 5...possible?

We have a family of 5 in a 3 bed hybrid and there is plenty of room for us, even when we were inside because of rain.
We have the Starcraft 229TB and it fits us perfectly.
Like said previously, check them out and see what model works best for you.
When we went to the Tampa RV show earlier this year, it rained pretty bad for about 45 minutes. We were "stuck" in the model hybrid we ended up buying with another couple. During that 45 minutes, there was myself, my wife, 2 of our kids (1 was in school), sales guy working with us, the other couple and the sales guy working with them. 8 of us were fairly comfortable.
The other couple bought that hybrid that day.

RE: first hybrid with 2 slideouts, new Roo 23IKSS

I think the awning would fit over the slide with enough room. The top of the slide is lower than the door by a few inches. It would be close though.
I love all of the extra counter space in the kitchen area by having the island.
I don't think I would like the tv sticking out frm the wall like it appears to. I think I would feel as if I were going to hit my head on it as I walked by.
Not sure I would like opening the door and being between the door and the slide. I would want the door opening away from the slide, but then again, I like the door opening to be away from the end of the awning in case it is raining.
It also seems like the slide out would cause a dark area since it would be blocking the porch light. Maybe there is another light in the back side, but a second porch light on the slide would be good.
I wonder how much room there would be once all closed up? Would you have to open a slide to get to the bathroom if you were to make a stop while on the road? Not a big deal, just something I was thinking about.
Nice looking set up though.
