RE: Now Open - -Autopista Monterrey-Saltillo-Torreon

The truck route used to bypass around to the north of the city - can RVs take 40 right through Saltillo and use those overpasses in the photo?

RE: Now Open - -Autopista Monterrey-Saltillo-Torreon

Thanks for the update - The truck route around Saltillo changes almost every year and it's confusing as well. I hope the new route (or lateral) is easier to follow.

RE: U.S. propane compared to Mexican LP "gaz"

I have run into cold weather returning to Maine - teens and twenties with Mexican Gaz - the furnace, refrigerator, and water heater still function.

RE: Canadians: Is it true that OHIP covers Mexican Medical Bills

By the way, Wm. I think the colored maps that are in your signature, may be the most complete I have seen in any forum. Come on down to the Yucatan to fill it in some more. Once we retire we'll have more time to travel further. Four or five weeks a year of vacation leave plus it's over 2,500 miles from Maine to the closest Mexico border. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Mexico.

RE: Canadians: Is it true that OHIP covers Mexican Medical Bills

Yes and the same goes for BC! The problem is that We have to cross that area in between Canada and Mexico. If Only there was a way to get only enough Extra Insurance to cover Us for the short time We travel through the States! Some folks call it the United States. Here in Maine we host Canadians who may not live long enough to wait their turn for an MRI in Canada and they visit our hospitals. I'm not sure what the payment arrangements are.

RE: OK to pass signal

I was riding a motorcycle in Quebec (a neighboring province) and had a semi give me a left turn signal on a two lane highway - I passed without incident.

RE: rving mexico

We drive at night a lot in Mexico - never any problems and all of the vehicles we see at night have functioning head and tail lights.

RE: Mexico electricity caution

Moisheh, so what part of 'Mexico electricity caution' did you not understand? Do you find some problem with reminding folks to use a surge protector and check the voltage? Using a surge protector in Mexico will guarantee intermittent power and frequent trips. I've RV'd in Mexico for 8 years with no surge protector and have had zero problems with equipment longevity.

RE: DURANGO MEXICO - DANGEROUS?

America's #1 cable news network (not CNN) interviewed 2 coeds who are traveling to Cancun for spring break. Both hosts were incredulous that these girls would dare go to Mexico. It's a darned shame how the media is portraying all of Mexico as dangerous - that's really going to affect tourism for years to come.

RE: First post, need some advice on first mexican trip.

Shop around for good insurance prices - our first trip into Mexico we paid way too much. The beaches around Teacapan Sinaloa are some of the nicest I've ever seen, not busy, absolutely no vendors. It's a ride from New Mexico, but closer than Baja. We always scoot right through the border towns and don't feel completely safe until we're at least 50 miles inside Mexico.

RE: Traffic Cops

Good advice... I'd add a few photocopied & laminated driver's licenses and color copied vehicle registrations. If the officer is on foot, or even parked off to the side of the road don't even look at them - if the officer waves you to the side of the road pretend you don't see them and continue driving. I've tried that a few times and gotten away with it.

RE: Parks in Teacapán?

We've stayed at Onac for the past two vacations - 2007 & 2008; It's really clean and well maintained. Power and water is good. The road in is sandy but has a base under it. I understand there's a washing machine available this year. Rafeal (owner) and his wife Anna Marie are very nice and hard-working. I'd be there right now if I could.

Thanks Dick!

Anyone at the Villas Onac?

Could you please deliver a message to Rafeal or AnnaMarie? Their phone # and reservation email form both appear to be not working. I wanted to tell them that we can't make it down this year (we had reservations) but hope to see them in 2010. Thanks, Bill

RE: best location to join rvers heading to mexico

Also check out www.ontheroadin.com. This is probably the best Mexico RVing site with interactive maps of RV parks, etc. I downloaded their west coast road log which shows Topes & Pemex locations, etc. That linked map is at least three years out of date - campgrounds listed as open have been long closed and new campgrounds aren't included. I'd also point out that an earlier post advising no use of electricity in Mexico (use the generator instead) isn't what I've found to be true during the 8 years I've camped in Mexico. Voltage may be higher or lower than 120 but it hasn't hurt my air conditioner, appliances, computer, TV, ... anything. During my travels the only bad electrical hookup I've heard about was at the Mexico Motel in Durango - one pedestal had 240V wired into a regular 120 outlet. But that campground has been closed for years now. Use the power in Mexico - if it's a little high or a little low it won't make a difference. If you try to use a conditioner or surge protector in line it may shut off the power frequently. Have fun and enjoy Mexico!

RE: Mazatlan to Durango

It's probably complete from Durango to ElSalto - we were last there in April 2008. The western part seems like it will take years to complete. It will be great when it's completed. I'm a pretty fast driver and it takes me at least 10 hours to drive from Durango to Villa Union (towing a trailer)

RE: Where does your sewer go? or do you Care

It wasn't that long ago (22 years) we were in Rivière du-Loup Quebec at a local park that featured a waterfall - turds floating down the river and over the falls. I'm sure it's not like that anymore, but just the same other nations are progressing at their own speed. Mexico's sanitation is years ahead of some other nations - when was the last time we heard of a cholera outbreak in Mexico? Foisting American standards by pressuring Mexico's RV park owners about their sewage treatment isn't going to do anyone any good.

RE: Food Confiscation

Frozen food isn't usually a problem - Some states may have inspection checks at the state line - vegetables and fresh fruit is taken to prevent the spread of disease/parasites/insects. Sinaloa and Sonora have agriculture check points, and I'm sure other states do as well.
