RE: Digital Multimeters- An RVer's Best Friend

Although I have some pricey voms most of the cheapos will do the job. I have. $500 digital but the Harbor freight $6 model is fine. Or $17 Walmart vom. My pricey unit shuts off by itself etc. & more accurate but this ain't rocket science. Stick with the ceaper ones. Once you learn what they can do then pop for a better vom. I can remember when a 20,000 ohm per volt meter was top of the line. Pretty expensive too. Buy a cheap one and use it. You can learn alot.

RE: Any 5th wheel hitch operate exactly like a semi 5th wheel?

If I ever had another 5th wheel there is no question I would buy the top of the line Reese 20K hitch. If they have a better one that is what I would buy. My 20K hitch was awesone. It rotated in both directions. Easy to hook. Never had a false hitch indication when it didn't latch. Once latched you could put a pin in to insure it stayed latched. JMHO

RE: Digital Multimeters- An RVer's Best Friend

The only thing missed was ohms law. E ______ I ยท R The other thing is sometimes checking turn signals you need a plain old test probe with a 12 volt bulb. Tracing down bad grounds you need to move the black ground lead on the meter to find them.

RE: Pets are NOT to be left unattended... what??

Does this phrase in a campground description mean that we aren't allowed to leave our dogs alone in the RV when we are touring? That's how it reads to me, but that also doesn't make sense to me. I can understand not leaving them tied up outside unattended... Michele For those not familar there are a couple of problems. They have big dog theft rings in the U.S. (probably not in Yellowstone) Leaving a dog alone where there may be access is an opportunity for those rings to steal your dog. Large dogs are trained to fight. Small dogs used for bait. The SPCA takes dogs because some of their offices are very over zealous and out of control. They took our dog to jail in southern CA when he was in the back of the truck (in the bed) for less than an hour. When confronted with a lawsuit and health certificates he was immediately released. However, in their custody for about an hour he was injured by their handler (crushed his nasal capillaries when they put the aggressive muzzle on him) and exposed to spinal meningitis in their filthy facility and almost died. He was on the critical list for over 3 days. Due to that experience our dog turned from a very friendly dog into a vicious attack dog. We have to be very careful. He now hates people. You can't even trust the SPCA people. The SPCA lost a multi million dollar law suit for stealing a circus elephant. Just be alert of your dog's safety.

RE: Former Head of FBI Hired To Investigate Pilot Flying J

Truckers pay the pump price. A large trucking firm has trucks all over the U.S. buying fuel at numerous Flying J stations. At the end of the billing period Flying J adds up the total fuel and sends them a rebate based on volume. Seems like it would be quite a task to keep track of all the trucks and Flying J stations on a 24/7 basis. All the Flying J stations sending info to billing office and then getting it to trucking firms. I could see errors occurring even if they were honest with changing fuel prices in different areas of the U.S. I know it is computerized but the computer is not any smarter than the person entering data. They wanted to make a big news splash adding retired FBI agent investigating. FBI agents are just like the rest of us when they retire. NO POLICE POWERS.

RE: DIY Insulating with spray foam kit

Cost me about $1.30 sq ft to have the spray foam in my metal shop. About 4 inches thick. Great stuff.

RE: Former Head of FBI Hired To Investigate Pilot Flying J

Once something like this happens everybody jumps on the band wagon to get their piece of the pie. Keep in mind anybody can sue anybody for just about anything, or even nothing. Don't like your neighbor sue him. Doesn't matter if you win or not. It will cost him just to defend himself. That in itself is punishment. I'm not saying Flying J didn't do anything wrong. They got caught & it is being corrected. These sue happy people are as bad as Flying J. JMHO.

RE: How Do I Charge, and Maintain 2 New 6 Volt Batteries???

When I dry camped in my previous TT before getting a solar panel I charged the batteries in the morning with jumper cables & my PU. You do need a voltmeter. I wouldn't go for a whole weekend without charging.

RE: gray water only connection help

Why not use a standard grey water valve? It may be easier to adapt to hose fitting with plastic gate valve because rv grey dumps into black outlet which you won't need. When I built a small camper I went from sink to hose outlet fitting with no holding tank. I carried a 5 gallon plastic container when we weren't in an rv park. I only used a 10 gallon fresh water tank. We used portable flush commode & showered in rv park.

RE: What Do You Feed Your Old Horse

This is where I learned that when they cut the hay to cure and it unfortunately rains 'many' unscrupulous farmers will douse the heck out of it with sodium to dry it to avoid the loss of a cut hay field with total disregard to what that could mean to the buyers animals. Yes, this seems to be the way to bale the hay at a higher moisture content. I think mostly east of the Mississippi where they have a lot of moisture and very few days of drying time. In WY we have to irrigate to get any water to the fields. Although we do have rain once in a while on hay in the wind row it isn't a major problem because usually very little moisture as an ongoing thing. However, you are right. If it is green it must be good hay is a common attitude. We have people driving a couple of hundred miles to purchase our hay. We are usually sold out as soon as it gets stacked. We keep it covered with tarps and will hold for people at no extra charge. Some people just have no place to store the amount of hay they will need for the entire year. We don't make people take ground bales, then we discount those out to cow people. Last year was the last hay year though. We just retired. Now that we have a farming contract the hay will be baled in the large 1 ton bales or plowed up for other more profitable crops. In the future it is going to be more and more difficult buying hay in the small 14 by 18 by 36 bales. Most of the poor quality hay goes to pellets and cubes which is why getting it analyzed is very important.

RE: Allies Specialty Vehicles Buys Monaco Corp Today

There is lots of inventory of RVs out there. Although we only had a 2 year TT we thought this would be the best time to trade up. If you look at sales things are starting to pick up. Once we get out of this recession they won't be making deals.

RE: Allies Specialty Vehicles Buys Monaco Corp Today

DW called Navistarrv today. Lets see first problem. Guy talked to wife about 15 or 20 minutes about owning a hay and cattle ranch in Wyoming because he lived in Wyoming for a while. Then transferred her to another person setting up appointments. She also had to know all about Wyoming. Last person said they just had a meeting this morning. nothing is going to change. WOW!! Guess that means the Navistarrv whiners are not going to be happy. Guess you could lie and say you are from Wyoming. We seem to be getting great service. They even made sure we knew they had a RV place with water and electric. Interesting note. Once DW gave them last digits of vin they had all the info on the computer about our RV.

RE: Allies Specialty Vehicles Buys Monaco Corp Today

I realize that when Monaco was bought out a few years ago numerous customers got left with no warranty. However, I have had 3 warranty issues on my new 2013 Monaco. I have gotten better warranty service than any RV I have owned since my 1989 Fleetwood Pace Arrow. I was in 3 different locations for the 3 separate issues. Monaco sent me to close by dealers that did not even handle their products. In addition they authorized repairs above what was installed on the product out of the factory. One of the dealers told me Navistarrv was paying top dollar for warranty repairs. No discounts like other manufacturers. So is it just me that is getting that great warranty service? Seems strange. I have about 7 months left on my warranty. Hopefully most of the major bugs have been repaired. For my warranty repairs Navistarrv has a 24/7 number. I have owned Pilgrim (no longer in business) Teardrop (no longer in business) Lance (warranty not too bad if you call them and complain) Alpenlite (no longer in business) Fleetwood (In 89 they had a plastic warranty card you could take to any RV dealer for repairs. Very good warranty service) Jayco (still in business but their warranty is pretty bad unless you happen to be next door to a Jayco dealer on a sunny week day & the dealer likes you. Then they only charge an inspection fee first. Guess that is to make up the discount Jayco pays them) Guess I don't understand the bashing of Navistarrv except they bought up a bankrupt business and a lot of owners lost warranty service. If Navistarrv hadn't bought it up the warranty would still be gone. Not sure you can blame Navistarrv for that.

RE: Navistar RV is gone.......Hello new owners

We'll see how it goes. Back in 1989 we had a Fleetwood Pace Arrow and had pretty good luck with warranty service. I know they are completely re-organized but Fleetwood seems to be back in business and doing well. Since they just bought the Navistarrv line while it is still building if they don't treat their customers well the Monaco and Holiday Rambler will fail. I'm sure they don't want that to happen. This is the 21st century. The internet conveys info quickly. Manufacturers can get a bad name quickly. We like our New Monaco and so far with Navistarrv we like the great warranty service. If it changes you'll see my posts. So far in my Monaco 33SFD there are only a couple of issues we are unhappy with. No storage under the bed. The TV in the bedroom is mounted in an upper cupboard door. The TV speakers are inside the cupboard. I just mounted two stereo speakers. We gave up some things because DW wanted a washer/dryer. Things we just found out we got were double pane windows as standard.

RE: French Toast Casserole...Yum

Yummy, that really looks good. Unfortunately we are old people that have to watch our weight and stay away from the foods we love like bread, pasta, & rice. We do break that tradition once in a while and that sure looks good.

RE: Warranty work refused

call me crazy, but they seemed to have " lost a potential customer." when you traveled 700 miles away to another dealer to buy something you could have bough locally.. Not justifying their decision, but understand it... Bryan A couple of years ago when I purchased a TT I could have purchased it locally. The local RV dealer does very good repairs and at a reasonable price. In fact they just installed vent covers on my new MH and were very reasonable. I am happy. However, if you buy a new RV from them you will pay dearly. They even advertise, no need to bargain we give you our best price and no high pressure. So the question is does someone buy from a local dealer and pay several thousands more, or play the odds? If no warranty repair take care of the bill yourself? My unpaid warranty service was about $500 on my Jayco 19RD. I figure I saved almost $10k on the TT. I did OK on the trade for my MH. Plus I learned a lesson about Jayco warranties. Notice, I ain't driving or towing a Jayco. I'm still playing the odds. I bought my Monaco in Laughlin, NV and live in NW WY. JMHO.

RE: Warranty work refused

Welcome to the world of RV warranties. You mentioned Bozeman Ford but unless I missed something you didn't mention the dealer in Utah. I had a warranty problem with my Monaco MH. Monaco rep sent me to a Salt Lake Ford dealer for repairs. They worked on it for over an hour and said they just didn't have the equipment to do the repairs. (suppected the fuel tank had to be removed) Monaco told me if there was any charge by the Ford dealer they would re-imburse me. The Ford dealer told me no charge and helped me find directions to Motorsportsland. We were treated very well and they repaired the problem within a few hours. Neither of those dealers even sold Monaco MHs. The reason many dealers don't want to handle the warranty issues is many RV manufacturers are really cheap. They don't want to pay for warranty repairs. They discount the warranty repairs. I can understand why dealers don't want to handle those repairs unless the RV was purchased from them. There are a few RV manufacturers that will step up to the plate and pay the going rate for warranty repairs. Since Monaco owners got beat up pretty bad in the past I think Navistarrv is trying to build up the name again by paying for the warranty repairs at the going repair rate. All 3 of my warranty issues have been handled at dealers that never sold Monaco MHs. They were glad to get the business. How long this great warranty service will last, I suspect, will be based on if Navistarrv sells their MH business. In the mean time I have 7 months left on my warranty.

RE: What Do You Feed Your Old Horse

Interesting, we used to be able to buy molasses granules in a 50 lb bag. Haven't seen it in the feed stores anymore. I see you purchase your hay pellets out of Canada. Wonder how their operations are run? In WY and MT a lot of the hay pellets are made from hay that isn't selling well because of quality. Of coarse timothy would have to come from a wetter climate. You see a lot of timothy east of the Mississippi where the water table is too high to raise alfalfa.

RE: Reese SC Weight Distribution w Sway Control

I had the Reese WDH with dual cam and used trunion bars. I only had it on a Jayco 19RD TT but it was pretty awesome. I towed over South Pass in 40 mph cross winds per DOT lighted warning signs. It towed very well. I never owned the friction SC
