RE: Aftermarket Tach for 454 P30

I just put a tach on our 95 454 P30. I got the cheapest tach I could from Oreilly,s. I picked up the signal from one of the coil wires.

RE: CONNECTING YOUR TELEVISION

I have a Toshiba that gave me the blue screen of death. I took it to the local Toshiba dealer and he was able to reset/reboot the unit which brought it back to life.

RE: Fuel mileage of Diesel engines

I have the little 230hp 5.9 Cummins. If I take it easy I can get 11mpg. I'm pretty happy with that.

RE: Allure Flooring

I have the adhesive Allure for about 4 years now. I am very disappointed as it is separating at the short seams. It is pulling apart and leaving a ugly gap on many (not all) of the short seams. Last year I cut some small strips and laid them in the openings and now they have pulled even further apart. I thought it had something to do with the extreme cold we have here, so last winter I kept the MH warm with space heaters while in storage. In the spring I noticed that the gaps hadn't grown larger, but recently they have been opening up more. I need to find my receipt and go back to Home Depot but I'm afraid they won't warrantee because it was installed in a MH instead of a house. Wish me luck!

RE: An unofficial survey - cost and setup of used MHs

We just bought a second Motorhome strictly to rent it out. A 1995 28ft Georgie Boy Cruise Master. Chevy P30 chassis with a 454. We paid $8500 for it and have so far put about $1000 into it. It will most likely need tires for next year. We figure we'll get about $150 a day or $1000 a week plus, so it should pay for it self rather quickly, hopefully turn a profit, if it goes well we may expand. We're almost done with the clean up and prep, and are getting all of our ducks in a row to cover the legal issues and will be starting to rent it out soon! Wish us luck!

1995 28ft Georgie Boy, Chevy 454, P30 chassis

Hi all! Well, tomorrow we plan on going to look at the above MH. It has 65,000 miles. I'm just wondering if there is any thing special I should be looking at or for as far as problems with these units. Any help or insight would be tremendously appreciated. Thanks! Jay Herte

RE: 1996 Frieghtliner Transmission 12V power question?

The wiring diagram showed that fused wire from the battery as the feed to the Allison box, so I started from that end. Another 2ft into the engine compartment, behind the air cleaner, there was another crimped connection. It was so corroded that it fell apart as soon as I got to it. No test light necessary! It fell apart as soon as I touched it! The wire has been striped back and re-crimped and sealed. Good to go! Thanks again everyone, the fellowship here is just great!

RE: 1996 Frieghtliner Transmission 12V power question?

I found the fuse located by the battery when we were on the road and it checked out good, but today I double checked it and yes it is/was good (power in the wire after all connections and fuse) but what gave me the opportunity to clean everything including the battery connections. Everything shiny and properly protected now. So, I still have no power to the Allison box. I'm going to try to trace backwards from there. I should be receiving the wiring diagram from Freightliner in the next couple of minutes, so that should help. Freightliner was really nice and tried to be helpful, and offered up the diagram as soon as asked. I do have a test lamp wired in so that will save a lot of trouble some checking. Easy to hang the light out the window while I was checking around the chassis battery. Thanks for the phone number and all the helpful suggestions. Update at 11, or before if/when I find the issue!

1996 Frieghtliner Transmission 12V power question?

Hello all! I have a issue that came up about 500 miles from home. While cruising homeward bound my 3060 transmission started acting up. First it lost all indicators on the touch pad, the speedometer went dead and it wouldn't shift. It seemed like it was in 5th gear with quite a wide rpm range. Then it cleared up. Within 50 miles I stopped to dump my tanks, shut down engine. Then I started the engine and right away it did the dead thing again and also showed "do not shift" on the dash. I pulled over out of the way, shut down, and the engine would not start again. It showed the "do not shift" on the dash, and clicked under the dash, but no joy. I figured since the touch pad was dead that the transmission wasn't telling the engine, hey I'm in neutral so you can start. I checked the obvious, and after much head scratching, I opened the Allison box with the 6 relays under the dash. It has 2-10 amp fuses in it, one labeled "Main Power" the other not labeled, both fuses good. The main power fuse did not have any power regardless of what I did, But the other fuse would show 12V with the key on. I tried swapping all the relays around and I got nothing. I finally supplied 12V from a different source (with a 10 amp fuse inline) to the fuse labeled Main Power and I have JOY! We made it all the way home without further incidence, I disconnected the alternate power source whenever we stopped. And I am about to start trouble shooting it. I think it my be a bad relay under the dash as there are several tucked way up where they can't be seen, only felt by hand. One or more does click when I turn the key on. I thought before I started trouble shooting I would bounce it off the minds here to see if I'm going in the right direction. I offer a early thank you for any thoughts you guys might have. I will check back in about a hour. And I will post to this thread the outcome for all to gain from! Sincerely, Jay Herte

RE: License plates from truck to TC and back again, and again.

On my toad I have the electric and brake hook ups under the front license plate. So I have to remove the front plate every time I hook up and replace it when I unhook. I just ran the screws in and out of the mounted nylon nuts until they loosened up enough that I can remove them by hand, no tools required. I snug them down finger tight and they have never loosened up on me. Going on 5 years.

RE: Replacement ideas for a grill regulator (Coleman Roadtrip)

I use a hose and clamps on the input pipe so I can operate my "Road Kill" grill of my on board tank, hooked in after the tanks regulator. Don't cut the pipe, the regulator will un-screw off the pipe! It is tight but it will un-screw.

RE: NEW RV PURCHASE HELP, TOWING!

We have the 5.9 230hp Cummins with the 6 speed Allison 3060 transmission. We often tow a 22ft cabin cruiser with it. It works fine, no speed demon, but we get 8-9mpg while towing the boat. I generally have the boat loaded with gas and complete scuba diving gear (complete with weights and tanks) for 4 people. A lot of weight but the 5.9 does OK! Good luck!

RE: Exhaust break-- transmission shift down

Our unit worked like this. Turn on exhaust brake while under power (a little pressure on the go pedal), nothing happens. Let off the go pedal the exhaust brake closes, the transmission indicator indicates 2nd gear but it downshifts only when it can to keep the RPM within the proper restrictions. As it slows down it will continue to down shift to 2nd gear. Apply some pressure to the go pedal, the exhaust brake turns off and it will upshift as it can. This set up didn't work for me because as you coasted down a hill you had to keep some pressure on the go pedal or the exhaust brake would start slowing down the MH when you didn't want to. And going down steeper, longer grades it would want to continue to slow down until you had to turn it off to gain speed. It would shift hard and you could not maintain a constant speed. I fixed it! I added a relay to do what this does Brake Switch, and that helped with coasting. But the best mod was to go to a Allison dealer and have them reprogram the transmission to only drop to 5th gear automatically. I can still select a lower gear on my transmission touch pad shifter so I have complete control going down the longer grades. I still go down in 2nd gear about 30 mpg if its long and steep, but I have done many downhills in 5th gear with the exhaust brake on, and many in between with changes in speed as I see fit. When I had the transmission reprogramed, the first time, the guy talked me into using 4th gear as the programed one. But I felt I would still like more control going downhill, so I stopped mid trip at a Allison dealer and they reprogramed it to 5th. Now I'm happy! Going down big hills I still have to be careful, but I just start out real slow and build speed as I see that I can still control it without using my regular brakes. Each of the 2 Allison dealers reprogramed the transmission for free even though I was willing to pay and they could have charged me for it. I have heard of some people being charged to have it reprogramed. Good Luck!

RE: breakawy switch

It should be just fine if you got it reinserted properly. You must break a electrical contact with it in. Generally if it's fully seated and straight it will be fine. If you don't break the contact your brakes will be applied continually until either the battery dies or you burn out you brake magnets. Either one not good. I don't know if when you're plugged into shore power, there is enough charging power from your convertor to not let your battery die, regardless you don't want to leave your brakes energized to long as they are designed for short applications, do not use as a parking brake. Now, how to tell if it is in fact inserted properly. As a quick no tools check I would disconnect the RV from any and all external power sources, shore power and any connection to the tow vehicle. Turn on a 12 volt light (incandescent, not florescent) that you can see from the brake away switch. Pull out the switch while watching the light, you should see the light go a little dimmer and/or flicker a little. When you reinsert the part the light should brighten back up! If you don't see a indication with the light you may have a problem that you should check out further. Good Luck!
