RE: 30 Amp RV to a 50 Amp post - Surge protectors and such

Hey smkettner, just saw your reponse. Here are some pictures. I don't know what these will tell you, but I don't see a J-box.
I've never posted pictures before (hope this works). Pictures in order: 1. Cable coming from receptacle. 2. Cable going into floor. 3. Just a demonstration of what's under that fidge. 4. Behind converter.
Note, there's a lot of room behind that converter. The oven is above it, though I "wouldn't" necessarily think that's a problem. As always..........thanks.
Well that failed. By chance do you have a Facebook? If so, then you should be able to see the pictures here. Note: the pictures are out of order now, but you get the idea:

RE: 30 Amp RV to a 50 Amp post - Surge protectors and such

With good access 30 minutes tops. The remote blinks with the different data about every second so best to have it kinda out of view. My preference anyway.
Panel to me is the breaker panel and yes most now also have an integrated converter to supply 12 volts.
Seems to me when you say replace the J box, room-wise, that "should" be a wash, or close to.

RE: 30 Amp RV to a 50 Amp post - Surge protectors and such

One of the easiest ways to install is to replace the entry J-box with the EMS Surge Protector.
The entry J-box often connects the flexible cord to the romex that continues to the main panel.
Other common option is behind the main panel or in a compartment where the main power feed passes through.
When you say panel, you mean the converter, right? I'll check tommorrow, but my dilemma may be space. Behind the 30 amp receptacle happens to be underneath the fridge. I'd say the space is about 36" by 26".
Other than the j-box, which I'll hunt down tommorrow, that compartment contains (gulp) the water heater, the water pump, the outdoor shower, the circuit system for the slideout, and of course the bypass valves and all kinds of wiring/hoses.
On a sidenote, the other downside of the trailer is you cannot access these things with the slideout closed. Not even the fridge. You do have some exterior access however, through the shower, which BTW, I added a cool little conversion.
But that EMS-HW30C looks dang sweet with the romote display. I will add it if I can, though if it looks over my head, I'll need to pay someone. Maybe an electrician or RV dude. How many hours you figure?
Thanks for the great info.

RE: 30 Amp RV to a 50 Amp post - Surge protectors and such

Using a standard adapter to plug a 30 amp RV into a 50 amp pedestal is perfectly safe in all conditions.
For a 30 amp RV I have and recommend the Progressive Industries EMS-HW30C.
No display or portable is fine also.
In reading these posts and what I'm trying to accomplish, it appears the best option is a hardwired surge protector. I don't know if that's an option for my FunFinder 210 UDS, but I'm going to check.

RE: 30 Amp RV to a 50 Amp post - Surge protectors and such

There seems to be a difference in opinion on whether it's "safe" to use a dog bone to connect 30 amp RV up to a 50 Amp post. What's your opinion?Yes it's safe. The chances of your cord or RV wiring to the CB panel drawing more than 30A is rather remote. Sure it can happen but not likely.
Additionally, I would like to order a surge protector, and I'm leaning toward one that's 30 amps. In your opinion, is it safe to connect a 30 amp surge protector to a 50 amp post using a dog bone? Note: There's not a 50 amp RV in my future. Yes it's safe.
One more question, what do you use as a surge protector (if any) when your RV is connected to a receptacle at home? I guess these receptacles are 15 or 20 amps. Truth is, I don't know if mine are 15 or 20. It probably doesn't matter anyway, on the condition the equipment (e.g. the surge protector) is rated for more than 20 amps I prefer the Progressive Industry full power protectors. The hardwired version means it's always installed are used.
I'm amazed at the considerations that go into an electrical system. Thanks in advance for your input.......
CA Traveler before you start saying it's safe to hook to a 30 to 50 I suggest you look at the way some of the 30 amp cords are connected to the inside the trailer.
As far as how the rec are wired in a house it depends on how old your house is and whether it was built to the NEC and inspected. If it's on the newer side the rec in the gauge is on a separate circuit that is GFCI protected. Plugging your trailer into any rec is fine but you will only get the amperage that the circuit is rated for.
Denny
Hey Denny: The house was built in 2001. It's a GFI receptacle, located in the garage. Are you saying I shouldn't need a surge protector?

RE: Where to RV on the Central/Southern California Coast?

Lake Cachuma on 154 about 15 miles north of Santa Barbara. Seen well behaved Pits in the campground in the past. If going south on 101 take the exit for Hwy 154. 5 miles past the 246 turn off to Solvang you'll be at the campground entrance.
Unfortunately they don't allow dogs near the shoreline (50 ft).
My son's pit is like a little boy. Plays with our 10 lb. dog. I know some pits can be a problem. Some if not all of these problems follow the bloodline and/or are because of the owner.
Off topic, it's a real shame what's happened to Pit bulls, and humans are 100% responsible. Go to any dog pound...........seems like 50% are pits. That said, I would never own one, because of the obstacles (e.g. can't bring them to many of the RV parks in California).

RE: Can I use a 50 amp connection for my 30 amp RV?

By chance can you provide an example for a "multi function" surge protector? I'm not getting good results from my search.
Note: Everyone's input is appreciated.
http://www.progressiveindustries.net/ems_pt30c.htm
Also available for hardwire and hardwire with display.
Progressive & SG at Tweetys
You will want a 30 amp item for a 30 amp RV. It will still work fine if plugged into 50 amp or 20 amp with a common adapter.
If it's good enough for smkettner it's good enough for me. I suppose I should use a protector at home too? The trailer has been plugged in lately, so my wife's friend can sleep in it. Hey.....she's a GREAT cook. Nice lady too.
Amazon has your protector for $257, includes shipping: http://www.amazon.com/Progressive-Industries-EMSPT30C-Surge-Protector/dp/B004A32CGI

ZZ,
Are you sure that Silver Strand SP offers ONLY 50 amp service? From my experience with Reserve America and Recreation.gov, a listing of 50 amp usually means 50 amp and 30 amp and 20 amp.
No I'm not sure. That said, I'm staying in Mission Bay anyway.

Is this considered a "multi function" surge protector? It appears to be a good deal.

well when I linked to that I got a bunch of choices but one surge guard portable at $230??? or there abouts would be a multi=function one. the standard surge protectors run $90 to $125 for a 30 amp.
bumpy
Maybe it sold. It's this, only with a lock for $245 before shipping.

Noted. I don't have a surge protector. I should probably invest in one.
you should NOT invest in a surge protector. you SHOULD invest in a multi function surge protector. do not throw 90$ away, spend $250 and get a good one.

RE: Where to RV on the Central/Southern California Coast?

Its been a battle, but I located a nice spot in Big Sur, right on the River at: http://www.fernwoodbigsur.com/
One more reservation to go, halfway between Big Sur and San Diego. Maybe Santa Barbara.
I have to say California has its issues (go figure). Most places are booked or the spaces are too small. Hardly anyone takes a Pit Bull, including Mission Bay. The Pitt belongs to my son who lives in San Diego, but we're going to have that dog and two others. And everything is expensive as *&*%*&. I've gone up the northern coast and these just aren't an issue.

RE: Where to RV on the Central/Southern California Coast?

Not on the coast but Pechanga RV park in Temecula is one of the nicest RV parks in southern California. There are numerous wineries there to visit. Its about 55 miles north of San Diego on I-15. About 25 miles from San Diego Zoo Wild Animal park.
On 101 we stay at Flying Flags RV in Buellton/Solvang. Really fun area with the Danish village of Solvang and wineries. About 25 miles North of Santa Barbara.
At Pismo Beach we like Pismo Coast Village RV. Beautiful beaches here, especially Avila beach just to the north. While at Avila area, have breakfast at Fat Cats at Port San Luis. Overlooks the water, not touristy and some of the best breakfasts around.
Further North we stay at Wine Country RV in Paso Robles. Again, lots of wineries here (see a trend?)
Yes I do...........

RE: Where to RV on the Central/Southern California Coast?

So far I've made reservations at Mission Bay for July 6th through July 10th. Only $75 a night (gulp!).
Next up, find a place maybe 200 miles north, for three nights.
I appreciate everyone's input. It's been very helpful.

RE: Can I use a 50 amp connection for my 30 amp RV?

The "dog bone" will give you 25 amps not 30 as it uses one leg of the 50 amp service. Most places that offer 50 amp service also have a 30 amp plug in the service box. But having the dog bone adapter is a good item to have, a few times my surge protecter showed a problem on a 30 amp plug and I used my adapter to run off of the 50 amp plug.
Noted. I don't have a surge protector. I should probably invest in one.

RE: Can I use a 50 amp connection for my 30 amp RV?

There is an adapter commonly called a "dog bone" which converts 50AMP service to 30AMP service. Available online at many places, and at most Wal-marts.
I was just looking at Amazon. I assume they're safe.

Can I use a 50 amp connection for my 30 amp RV?

Probably a dumb question. I locked up a reservation at SILVER STRAND SB, CA. Let me just say reservations for 5 nights in early July on the beach is tough, so I was in a hurry. Anyway, Reserve America shows all of their sites as 50 amp, but my trailer is 30 amp. Two questions for the green RVer known as me.
1. Does 50 amp generally mean they can provide 30 amp from the same site?
2. Is there an adapter of some sort that's safe to use for conversion?

RE: Where to RV on the Central/Southern California Coast?

We're going to take a few weeks off and travel from the Reno area to San Diego. We'd like to stay on the coast. I have a 23' travel trailer and two dogs, though one is more like a rat. I figure we'll spend 5 days in San Diego and take 2-3 days on the return trip, which gives us 7 days for the trip to San Diego. It's only 600 miles, roughly.
Do you have any suggestions where to stay on the central coast, toward San Diego, and finally in San Diego?
1. 80 to I-5 to Hwy. 46 to Hwy. 101
2. South on 101 to Ventura then take Hwy126 east back to I-5.
3. Going from north to south:
a. Kit Fox RV Park in Patterson, just past Stockton.
b. Pismo Beach (2 state parks) 1 RV Park run by the county
c. Santa Barbara 3 state parks on the ocean to choose from
That's some good information. Thanks.
