So what? Seriously: so what? It's better but it does not matter. Regular oil is good enough.
I guess because the OP asked....

RE: Leaf Spring Frame Mounts

The truck sits level when loaded which means it drops about 2". The truck is stock height.

RE: Leaf Spring Frame Mounts

Initially the trailer was 2" nose high with the pin box at the lowest setting which left me with just over 5" of bed rail clearance. At most road/driveway transitions it would come close to hitting the rails. Many times I would have to stop and back out to keep them from contacting.
The only option I had was to lower the truck or raise the trailer. I flipped the axles, now it has about 8" of be rail clearance after moving the pin box to the highest adjustable position, but the 5er is 3" high in the rear now.
I have options, I can lower the trailer or I can buy a 3" adapter to bolt under the Super Glide ($150). I feel like raising the nose of the 5er higher is not the right answer due to the fact that I already have 8" which would grow to 11" of bed rail clearance. Lowering the 5er by repositioning the springs in the hangers would also lower the CG as well as fix my tail high issue while allowing me to maintain decent bed rail clearance.
I hope that describes what my goals were/are.

RE: Leaf Spring Frame Mounts

Here are a few pictures of the spring Hanger:

You can see the pipe welded between the hanger sides that I would have to cut out to allow the springs to be mounted higher.

RE: Leaf Spring Frame Mounts

Your description is basically correct, and your thinking is the same as my thinking. I am just worried that the welds, will have weakened the structure of the hanger with the pipe not there...and I'm not an engineer.

RE: Leaf Spring Frame Mounts

I need most of my height, so I only want to lose a couple of inches. I many have to cut off the old hangers and weld on new ones, so far that sounds like the most viable option so far.

RE: Leaf Spring Frame Mounts

Usually you would raise the nose instead. Not enough adjustment available from higher hitch, lower pinbox?
No, there is no more adjustment on the pin. The hitch does not adjust.
I am at 8 inches of bedrail clearance I wasn't sure I wanted more than that anyway.
I have seen MANY trailers with the frame mounts with multiple locations to mount the springs in. Mine are approx 6-8 inches long but between the two flat portions of the mount, they welded in a 2 inch portion of a metal pipe. If it wasn't there, and there were holes, the springs could be raised (lowering the trailer) 2 - 4 inches.

Leaf Spring Frame Mounts

The frame mounted leaf spring mounts are rather long on my my 5th wheel and my springs are mounted to the lowest point on them.
I need to lower my trailer about two inches(trying to get it level) but there are no holes higher on the mounts, not only that, but there is a two inch section of metal pipe welded in the upper portion of the mount near the top for support.
Would I be able to cut that out, grind it smooth and drill new holes without weakening it too much?

RE: Adjusting Pin Box?

Nothing wrong with redrilling a pin box to the mounting frame. As long as the bolt pattern spread and edge distance is the same or better than OEM it works fine.
I jumped through the hoops to mark and drill today and I can't maintain the bolt pattern/spread or edge distance. I would have ended up with 1/4" distance to the edge.
So, it looks like I am on the hunt for the best price on the hitch lift for the Super Glide.

Try this for your hitch Clicky

RE: Adjusting Pin Box?

What C. B. Said.... That's what I did on my old rig.
BTW, I'm in Huntsville to. Holler if you need any help with it....
This does sound like a good way to keep the pattern and since you have done it as well, I assume you have had no adverse effects?

RE: Adjusting Pin Box?

Drill another set of holes seems like an obvious idea.
While obvious, as you so kindly put it, I certainly wouldn't do it without some previous precedent. Of course this why I am here discussing it...

Adjusting Pin Box?

I am going to be lowering the king pin to raise the pin of my 5th Wheel.
I searched and couldn't find any reference to this issue...
Currently all the bolts are in a V pattern and when I lower it they will not be able to be in the same position. The angle of the Pin Box prevents the front holes to be bolted when I lower it more, and I need to lower it because I am 3 inches tail high and the Super Glide hitch has no height adjustment.
Before:
http://inlinethumb11.webshots.com/45706/2203509310104212874S600x600Q85.jpg
The center section will have to have two bolts, one above the other and the rear most section will have one bolt. I could do this with two bolts toward the rear and one in the center.

RE: Barstow nightmare

I think I would have disconnected and tried a different angle, maybe laid out that board to drive on when I hooked back up.

RE: Today is the day...

I want to do this to our DF 305j any other tips or advise?
Air tools
Lots of blocking (I used railroad ties cut into two foot lengths)
Have a buddy for help and to run and get things you forgot
Double/triple check the spring perches for parallel
Torque in stages (I did it in 10 ft lbs increments after 30)
Use four or more jack stands along with the landing gear and stabilizers.
Other than that, just take your time and be careful!
