RE: Battery charging from truck

Thanks for the help and the diagrams. The truck is a 1/2 ton chevy. I'm thinking about running the charge wire directly from the alternator to the battery isolator and then directly to the camper battery. And I probably will install a fuse block in line just back of the alternator. I'm thinking I only need to run a red wire (+) back and then from the battery a ground to the frame. This way it can save on some wire cost. Or do I need to connect it to the battery post. And how the alternator differentiate between the truck battery and the camper. Basically you want the truck to charge first and then move onto the camper battery??
Thanks

Battery charging from truck

Hi.
I want to get my son a charging kit for his camper so when he drives it charges his battery from the truck. I'm thinking I need to run a 4 or 6 gauge from the truck battery back to the camper then figure out some kind of plug arrangement from the camper to the truck wire charging line. I know I need a fuse at the battery and a regulator to keep the truck battery from discharging while pluged in. I know someone out there has done this before. Is there a kit???
Thanks

RE: Noise from rear differential

It must be pretty noisy considering its 30 plus feet back. I would have a shop drop the diff cover and check the diff today! On another note, have you checked u-joints in the drive shaft. They can make a lot of noise but probably not the whining noise that you are describing.
good luck

RE: Fuel mileage

Six to maybe 7 sounds about right for a large coach with a gas motor. Keep the speed down and inflate the tires to the maximum comfortable amount. When you hit the hills don't try to pull them hard. Just slow down and find a lower gear that can pull the hill with less throttle. Remember you are driving a house so take your time and have fun.

RE: losing power on top end

Just got the coach back from the shop. Bad turbo. It looked as if something went into the inlet side. The blades were scared and chipped. Lucky for me nothing else was damaged.
The coach has more power and get up than ever.

RE: Tach quick working

Got the coach back and yes the speed sensor was bad but it did not fix the tach. The techs told me the gauge is bad. They were getting a signal to the tach.
And my next problem is the Freightliner dealer told me the gauge package has been discontinued.
Does any one know where I can get the unit rebuilt?

RE: Tach quick working

Just an update.
Just got a call from cummins Ne and apparently there is a bad speed sensor on the tranny that is causing the tach not to work.
Go figure

RE: Tach quick working

ok,
I've done a little more searching on this issue and need a little more guidance. Where is the VDC?
The tach does work sometimes during idle. But as soon as you add throttle the tach drops to nothing. It seems more like a loose wire somewhere.
Any help would be great.

RE: losing power on top end

Thanks for all of the replies.
A little more history is needed. I recently changed out both filters as I usually do with Cummins oem filters. No change.
About 15k miles back I had the cummins folks replace the lift pump and do the valve adjust because the unit totally failed on the way home. It got within 25 miles from home and had to be towed to cummins NW. Thank god Allstate insurance paid the bill.
Is there an easy way to check the turbo boost without installing a complete gauge package. (I know I should have put one in when I unstalled my EGT gauge last year)
And what kind of Boost should I be getting at say 2000rpm no load and maybe the same rpm under load?

losing power on top end

I drive a 1999 34 foot itasca on a freightliner chassis. I'm running a 5.9 cummins isb with an allision mt643 tranny.
The unit seems to run out really well and is still maintaining good fuel economy. I have kept up on all of the usual maintenance items like air filters, both fuel filters, oil changes and all. And the local cummins dealer has done all the other maintenance, IE valve adjust, coolant flush, tranny service and all. And the unit has 60,000 miles on it.
But lately it has lost some of the top end power. It just doesnt pull the hills as well and it has a little bump in the motor like its missing a slight beat. (very Minor but I notice it)
The intake and exhaust appears tight.
I do not have a boost gauge so I don't know if i'm losing some power there. Do turbos give it up after a period of time?
Maybe some folks can give me some ideas to check off the list before going to the shop.
Thanks
