RE: Invasive species - any where you live ?

If you ask some people up here they would say tourists are an invasive species! But then, I act like one every summer so I can't comment on that.

RE: Does The RV Make The Man/Woman?

I wouldn't say I show a particular friendliness towards one type or brand of RV, but I do admit to fits of jealousy when I see a big fancy multi-$$$ Class A or bus conversion pull into the RV park!

So how many of these do you have to check off before you're a hopeless case???

RE: Rainy Day RV Activities

As long as the conditions are not too bad, put on the rain gear and go outside - the area attractions should be less crowded. I agree with the above post...don't let a little rain stop you from getting out and seeing the sights. Anyone who ONLY RV's in fair weather doesn't use their RV much!

RE: Peanut Butter Not Working

Well for those of you plagued with rodents (or any kind of pest really) there is one sure-fire cure for it. Just come to Alaska and leave your rig parked up here one winter... I guarantee that whatever your pest problem, cold storage of your RV at -50 will cure the problem! We don't have any rats, mice, roaches, ants, or unwanted houseguests after that! LOL!

RE: weres everybody at?

Here in Alaska as the name implies. We call Fairbanks home, but come summer it's hard to find us here! :)

RE: Termination Dust

Well "Sir Frank" posted a webcam of Anchorage and they get a whole different weather than we do here in Fairbanks! And yes, the first coating of "dust" melted away up here too...as it normally does. But you can count on a second (and third, and fourth...) coat really soon! Our weatherman has announced we should have sticking snow by the middle of next week. We'll see.

RE: Termination Dust

I've never added anything to either my gas vehicles or my diesel MCI, and I run ("ran" in the case of the MCI) year-round at temps into the minus 50s without even a single issue in 20+ years. The fuel that comes out of the pumps has everything needed. You've been very lucky then. I've had problems with fuel here both gas and diesel and have had to add every year. Fortunately, none of my fuel problems left me stranded, but we did have one incident a few summers ago that almost did. Got hold of some bad diesel that had a lot of water in it apparently. Took several bottles of HEET and a new tank of fuel to correct the problem!

RE: Taxes, State by State

This is why it's so difficult to compare state rates; so many states have rates that vary from one locality to another. I know I won't get exact tax rates and percentages. First off as you said it is hard to get precise figures because each city, county, and state do things differently. Plus they change constantly. I was just trying to get an idea of what to look for in different areas of the country.

RE: Water weight lowers rv by how much ?

The RV is a 2005 Four Winds Hurricane 32r. the height is OK with the a/c units, but the satellite dome makes it 2-3 inches too tall. removing the satellite, or just the dome is my next option, i own the storage unit so i don't want to look elsewhere, and yes, letting air out might do it also. If you own the storage unit, what are the chances of raising the unit - like putting it on concrete blocks? Just a thought...

RE: Why - curious more than anything

That's a perfect description of my folks! They have a pull trailer and a boat, both are retired, and yet each year they go out for one trip - always to Valdez, and always the same time of the year! Me and my family are complete opposites - now that I am retired, we travel (without an RV for the moment because of unexpected financial troubles) whenever we can throughout the summer. DW doesn't like driving the highways in winter or we'd go more. But come spring we hit the road hard and fast! And we have a family policy to see someplace new, or that we haven't seen in awhile, each summer.

RE: What do you do in the winter with the batteries?

Well, living in THE northern state, we take our battery out of the unit and bring it inside, put it on a piece of 2x6 in the basement and it lives there over the cold months. We charge it up with a Battery Tender so it stays healthy, and that's about all we do for the battery.

Taxes, State by State

Hello All I am trying to do some research on taxes in each state. What I want to know is what taxes each state levies on their people. Income, Property, Estate, Sales, Luxury, School, or other taxes. Does anyone know a website that has this info or do I have to muddle through each states' web system (big hassle there!) I don't need to know the particulars like percentages or what county has what tax, necessarily, just a brief overview or comparison.

RE: Termination Dust

What is a little dust? This is our little Class C beside Kluane Lake in Yukon, in December 2001. :B Hi Sue, One of the places we hope to see sometime soon is Cottonwood RV Park, there by Klune Lake. I haven't been there myself but I've seen pics from others who have. And judging by what they say and what I've seen online myself, it's a nice place.

RE: Termination Dust

Understood. We "southerners" just don't have the true perspective. Must take quite a bit attention to diesel fuel problems as well. Formulation, additives, etc.? Think I'll pass on a winter visit then. OK? Rick Yes Rick we diesel drivers do have to "baby" our vehicles some through the winters up here. But then everyone has to be careful and cautious up here in the winter. Whether you drive a gas, diesel, or other, it's just dang hard on a vehicle that has been sitting for awhile to start and go. If it isn't the cold oil trying to circulate, it's the low power battery, or the fuel (which hopefully is a good grade!). Diesel drivers need to put additives in their tanks to keep the diesel from gelling, but gas guzzlers need to put an additive called HEET in their tanks as well to absorb any water or condensation that may get into their tanks. The least little bit of water can wreak havoc with your fuel system. And then everyone has to put something in front of their radiator to keep it from freezing as they drive. -50 temps with a 40 mph breeze blowing through will shut a radiator down pretty quick!

RE: Termination Dust

I photographed TD on the mountain tops around Riley campground in Denali on Aug 19. That was a month ago. Rick Well Rick, the local weatherman just informed us tonight that Denali reported TWO FEET of snow last fell last night! Here in Fairbanks, it has snowed and melted a couple times already...it's just "warming up" to snow (that sounds funny!), but it will be here to stay before the end of the month I think.

RE: Termination Dust

Hi Wes! So, 1st day of fall, and it begins to "fall", huh? They got some white stuff on the higher summits here last week - supposed to get a good frost around here this Friday. We're headed out for a few more days (locally), then to the coast of Maine to visit friends next week, but that will likely be it for us this season. Take care - and just think - no more shovelling out hydrants!!! 8^) ST Actually 'rock, I wasn't in charge of shovelling out hydrants in my department - we had Civil Engineers to do that. But I won't have to play in the water at -50 below either! Fighting fires was fun at times but when the thermometer froze solid, it wasn't much fun at all! People asked me how I fought fires in the deep cold of Alaska...I would just tell them I opened the door, waited for the fire to freeze solid, and carried it outside! LOL!

RE: Imponderable #2

I like it when one of the Kashi crunchers dies crossing the street and getting hit by a bus! Talk about irony! Eat healthy, exercise regularly, and die anyway!

RE: How much is the cheapest way to dispose of an RV?

Well I've found that 5 gallons of gasoline and a road flare will take care of most any unwanted debris!

Termination Dust

Well, it's that time of year again folks...the Termination Dust is back (you folks may know it by it's generic name...snow!) I saw a couple motorcycles and one Class C that were on their way to being put away for winter but other than that, the roads are empty of all but the crazies who will soon fill the ditches for the rest of us to drive safely! The DW and I have stocked up our fridge and pantry so we will bve staying off the roads for the next few days...until people up here remember how to drive on the white stuff! For those of you that are lucky enough to continue using your RV's, we'll just have to live life through you for the next 8 months!
