RE: Propane Issue

Just tried it again. The stove would work with either tank online. The furnace will only work with the right tank. When on the left tank, the furnace will blow cool air for about 3 minutes and quit.

RE: Propane Issue

I'll try your suggestions. Tartan it looks like you and I have the very same rig. I'll thought I had opened them slowly but I'll try it again.

Propane Issue

The propane setup on my rig is pretty standard to fivers. The master propane tank is on the right next to the master control regulator. It connects to the left tank from the regulator. On the left side of the rig there is another smaller non descrip regulator right before the left tank connection. I have not been able to use the left side connection. I've had to manually move the full left tank to the right side in order to use it. I've replaced the regulator which didn't help. I've asked the shops to look at it when I've gone in for other services. They always tell they can't find anything wrong with it. The only think I can think of is that there is a leak between the left tank and the master regulator or there is something wrong with the secondary regulator. Has anyone else run into something like this?

RE: Dometic Refrigerator RM2862

Thanks to everyone on this project. I wanted to get back to everyone regarding the outcome. I used rvcoolingunit.com. The guy was great in working with me over the phone in the installation process. I have heard said that everything is simple to the person that knows...and I now I know this friggin refrigerator and will never be afraid of a breakdown again (at least the labor part). All the repairs shops were talking 5 hours work which does not make sense to me...why would a pro, with all the facilities and experience charge the same as hours as it takes a novice to do the job? (and then they had about a 50% markup on the part). A job that would have cost me about 1300, I did myself for just over a quarter of that.
Anyway, to those that are taking on the job and are dealing with the same or similar installation, I will be glad to help...just shoot me an email.

Looking for a Park Long-Term

I retired about 3 yrs ago and have been spending few months here and a few months there. I've done a lot of family visiting but it time to wrap that up. I'm looking for a park for an extended stay. Hopefully in an area with a mild climate year around so I don't have to pick up and move everytime the seasons change. I'm thinking LA, Orange or San Diego County but if I get too close to the ocean, the rates start to exceed my budget for monthly fees. Don't need the resort thing...I rarely use the pool that seems to put a "park" into the "resort" category, do need wifi though.

RE: Dometic Refrigerator RM2862

Doug, I know you are right regarding the parts issue. There are people who have a problem and pull into the nearest repair shop and say fix it. So much more power to them but I recently put in a water heater that cost me 325 on the internet. Every shop in town wanted upwards of 500 for the unit plus 250 labor. So they not only want the labor but a substantial markup on the product. (by the way, more often then not, they use the very same supplier). I don't really disagree with anything you said but now I know that there are shops that will work with you.
I now just have to decide if I'm up to replacing a cooling unit...ever time I do something myself, I not only get the project done but I get experience and a little more independent from the high prices of Mr. Fix-it. Very important if you're retired and on a budget. (by the way I found a mobile mechanic who had no problem with me providing my own part with the proviso that it was the exact part). Just my opinion but I think the smart businessman segments his market and adjusts accordingly to maximize profit.

RE: Dometic Refrigerator RM2862

Thanks everyone...I knew the answer but kept my fingers cross for a more pleasant reality. All the dealers are quoting hundreds for labor and additional hundreds for the product. They get indignant if you want to provide your own parts...I know everyone has to make a living but off me? I'm retired and I'm gradually becoming an RV mechanic by necessity. The people at RV Cooling Unit.com insisted that any half decent backyard mechanic could do it...now I just have to decide if I fit the bill. Anyone out there actually changed out a cooling unit???

Dometic Refrigerator RM2862

It seems like I'm always fixing something these days...this time its the Dometic Refrigerator(RM2862). It simply quit! The lights above the refrig are ok, there is power at the plug, the flue outside is hot but there is no cold on the back panel...I tested the propane (which I normally don't use) and I could see the flame. The hot side of the system seems to be working. There is a greenish residue that smells of ammonia on the bottom under the cooling unit coil. I think I know but because of the price tag, I am looking for options.

RE: CD/DVD, am/fm player

I wanted to let everyone who helped out that I have found the best source when it comes to time to replace that RV home entertainment unit. What complicated matters was that outfits like Philips said they would nullify the warrantee I spliced their unit to my wiring...since my wiring is built in, that was something of a problem. Also the compartment size became a factor. Plus many mfg use proprietary plugs...the best source I found was Baileys Wholesale Electronics. Thanks to everyone

RE: CD/DVD, am/fm player

The old unit that I am replacing is shelf sitting, with surround sound capability...I don't need the speakers since I'm not about to attempt any kind of a rewire. I need a system with generic type terminals (bare wire preferrable) so I can wire the old speakers to the unit. I understand that manufacturers are making their terminals proprietary so that their merchandise can't be used as a component.
As you can tell I'm not an a/v guru...I just want to remove the old square foot, plastic box and put in a new square foot plastic box, connect the generic speakers, plug it in and watch a movie.

CD/DVD, am/fm player

My unit has a small home entertainment system with built in speakers. It is time to replace the cd/dvd, am/fm player and finding it much more difficult than I expected. First of all, I didn't realize that this unit was specific to RV's. The one I have is so generic it doesn't even have a brand name. I've surfed the net and can't find the right one for size, features and speaker connects.
Many of those you find in Best Buy are too big, usually don't have the radio feature and have proprietary speaker connects.

RE: Wifi Internet connection

The guy that was describing the world opening up and swallowing the park if they went to direct connection only, was right on! Internet access at the space has become indispensible...just ask any park that doesn't have it. An RV park in Las Vegas, with nice facilities refused to provide it (they thought it competed with their casino) and just buckled...too many people were saying "no thank you" when making reservations and learning they didn't have internet.

RE: Will gas leak cause water heater lighting issues?

I've been having problems with my dsi water heater igniting especially in the middle of a camping trip since the tt was new. Took it to dealer, they tested everything and could find no problem with water heater and components but they didn't test the line under the tt for leaks. Well today I crawled under the TT with a spray bottle with soapy water and I found a leak where it tees off to the wh and stove. I'm planning on fixing this tomorrow by tightening the pipe and perhaps adding pipe dope but will this cure my water heater lighting issue?
Everything had been checked by the dealer...but then he found the leak. The problem was recurring during each trip. I don't know...sounds like a leak is a good bet to me.

Sorry, I'm sure its because I'm not that knowledgeable about these things...but I don't understand how anything you've said changed anything I said. I will bet even money that stopping that leak will fix the problem.

RE: Will gas leak cause water heater lighting issues?

I understand what you are saying. It could not close down under normal usage but that is exactly what a regulator does is to regulate the pressure within the system. If the leak of the originator of this thread is at that critical point between the check valve turning off, again I state, that could explain why the system closes down midway through his trip. With all due respect, I understand you are a pro...but I'm assuming that those that wrote the pdf I cited are pro's as well and they say there is a check valve.

This fitting contains an excess-flow check-valve. This check-valve is deigned to close and allow only a small bypass flow (no
more than ten cubic feet per hour) of gas anytime there is a larger than expected flow through the system.

RE: Will gas leak cause water heater lighting issues?

"There is NO mechanical LP regulator that will shut down from a small leak ON THE LOW pressure side of the system." A small leak...isn't that the whole issue and doesn't that explain why he had service for part of his trip before it shutdown. You're a pro and I accept your credentials but perhaps you'll address the issue raised in my last post that states there is a check valve.

RE: Will gas leak cause water heater lighting issues?

I am not sure if we are talking apples and oranges...either your system has a regulator or it doesn't. The regulator on my fifthwheel will shut down if it detects a leak. Maybe we need a pro to address this because everything I know about regulators is that they a specifically designed to shut down if you have a leak and I have experienced exactly that.
http://service.airstream.com/files/library/913e19ebae62b056.pdf
Type 1 (CGA 791) Connection Function Description
This fitting contains an excess-flow check-valve. This check-valve is deigned to close and allow only a small bypass flow (no
more than ten cubic feet per hour) of gas anytime there is a larger than expected flow through the system.
An excess-flow condition can be due to a broken high-pressure gas supply line and certain types of regulator failure. Also
when the service valve is opened normally the excess-flow check –valve will close temporarily until the system is fully
pressurized.
Functions: There are two functions performed by the excess-flow check-valve: check system for large leaks and reduce gas
flow in a failed system

RE: Will gas leak cause water heater lighting issues?

It certainly could resolve the issue. Your propane regulator is designed to shut down the propane if there is a leak in the system. No leaks and you should get propane to your water heater. Do your other gas appliances work? I would guess that your furnace would not work either.
Not sure about the DSI factor...I just know that propane regulator will shutdown if it detects a leak.

RE: No hot water, Atwood

I guess water heaters can vary...but there is nothing to replacing that check valve. I presume you have the stardard plastic water lines running to your tank...that will give you enough play to remove the valve at the the top and replace it...be sure you install it with the arrow pointing out...get a good snug fit. For the heck of it since you're there, replace your Flair-it fittings probably elbows, it will save you hasstle down the road.
