RE: 2012 Raptor with Towmasters = BOOOM!!!

I'd like to see how ST tires would match up if they went thru the much more stringent LT tire spec requirements tests from DOT/UTQG,US Government, etc... jmo Hate to burst yer bubble, Bub, but LT's aren't subject to UTQG testing/standards like passenger car tires are. That's why the letters on the tire are so different- pretty much the same codes on an LT that you'll see on an ST. Should have written NHTSA, not UTQG, as you are correct about UTQG. That doesn't change the Bottom line though... Much higher testing requirements on all LT tires rated to carry humans, with reserve capacity, compared to lower requirements for ST tires. Here is the link for the NHTSA site lots of reading there, check it out yourself. http://www.nhtsa.gov/Vehicle+Safety/Tires And its going to get worse real soon. Even less stringent requirements for ST tires, possibly real soon. Thanks to trailer manufactures wanting cheaper trailer type tires... NHTSA "On March 13th,2013 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published notice in the Federal Register of its intent to clarify that special trailer (ST) tires are permitted to be installed on new trailers with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,000 pounds or less and that such trailers are excluded from a tire retention testing requirement of FMVSS 110 that was intended for passenger cars, light trucks and buses. This issue was brought to NATM’s attention by member companies in 2012 and the NATM has been integrally engaged in working with NHTSA and industry allies to achieve resolution. The coalition, which included the NATM, Recreational Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) and others, carefully reviewed the regulatory notices that created the requirement for rapid tire deflation testing, and reviewed relevant safety data. After substantial efforts, NATM and the coalition encouraged NHTSA to revise the regulations to clarify that rapid tire deflation testing requirement was not intended to cover trailers and it worked with Transport Canada to minimize the impacts to imports into Canada while the process was underway. The action proposed by NHTSA will now enter a 60 day period for public comment and NATM intends to submit comments supporting the clarification. NATM was extremely pleased with NHTSA’s responsiveness on the issue, and if NHTSA adopts the proposal, it would remove a potentially significant regulatory impediment for NATM members companies." By the way, just in case you don't know, NATM, stands for National Association of Trailer Manufacturers jmo

RE: 2012 Raptor with Towmasters = BOOOM!!!

How many posts are we going to see about crappy ST tires? I don't care if they are in 16" size or 15" size. People are fooling themselves trying to run these. It is only a matter of time until you have an issue. Anyone with a big heavy toyhauler should be converting over to LT tires. Looka here....RV.net/Toyhaulers has a certified Mr Knowitall on Toyhauler tires :B After going thru about 4 sets of S T tires myself I stand behind Mr Knowitall !! X 1000000 gazillion... ST tires suk. Problem is, the rating system we must go by, for ST tires, is questionable at best. I don't believe those ST trailer tire rating specs are the must do end alls. Those ST specs, don't pan out, imo. I'd like to see how ST tires would match up if they went thru the much more stringent LT tire spec requirements tests from DOT/UTQG,US Government, etc... jmo

RE: BlowMax Tires

I have gone thru all 6 towmax tires on my Raptor in 1 1/2 years . I check them before i leave each time i go on the road and so far have been lucky and found bad tires before they found me. My neighbor didn't beleave me and found out the hard way when one of his blew up and remodeled the side of his trailer. I want to upgrade to Goodyear G14 or some other rib tire but they are all 235 85 which is 1" larger than my 235 80 and don't have the space between the tires for clearance . I was told by someone that the Goodyear G14 235 85 is the same size inflated as the Towmax 235 80 !!!! Does anyone know the true diameter of an infalated Goodyer G14 235 85 tire ??? I went thru the same thing before switching to LT tires. Did tons of research and comparing sizes, specs, etc... Bottom line, you can probably fit 245/75/16 on a big triple axle and be 1/10" smaller diameter, same tread width. Or go with the 235/85/16 and be 1/2" larger, measured from the wheel to outer tread of tire. That 1/2" each tire will add up to 1" less room between your tires on a triple axle. JFYI, different brand tires are different sizes. Up to 3/4" different on 235/85/16. Example... Comp TA commercial 235/85 is 31.4" overall diameter Michelin XPS Ribs235/85/16 are 32" overall diameter IMO, size is really not an issue, you can find a LT tire that fits in 235/85/16, maybe exactly if you look hard. No, the biggest problem is if you have enough tire load capacity. The LT tires are 3042# vs the ST at 3400#. For me its not a problem since my 6000# axles match my XPS RIBS 3042# load capacity perfectly. But historically, the higher load ratings of the ST tire don't seem to prove there durability at all, in fact its the opposite by a biggg margin. I'm very skeptical of the testing procedures and test/specs results for the ST tires, compared to passenger tires. Just doesn't add up. I've seen a guy go to Hancook LT tires on 7000# dual axles big TH. He had problems every year blowing out ST tires constantly. Seemed like every trip to glamis when unloaded, there would always be a blown tire carcass next to his TH. With the LT tires that are underrated for his weight, not 1 blowout in 3 years so far. Go figure... Tire rack has an excellent online spec sheets on every tire they sell. jmo

RE: Another tire question.

If Chinese tires are so bad, what do the Chinese use on their toyhaulers? Michelin Ribs ??? lol To the op, with st tires, its not so much the miles or age, its the speed. ST tires are rated to 62 mph max. If you plan on going close to that speed then you are essentially maxing out the tire every trip. Kind of like if your load rating is 100# and you run at 99lbs all the time. What I'm saying is, its nice to have a buffer for your max load and max speed rating, not good to run right up close to or above either spec. IMO, I believe the speed rating is what rips the st tire apart. They aren't built, or rated for, 65-75mph speeds hour after hour towing. In fact, if you want to blow one out fast, try towing at full load, at 85mph for a while... LT tires are rated at minimum 100mph, many LT tires rate much higher max speeds. Not that I would ever tow that fast, just nice to have the big extra buffer to under stress the tire, imo. Its not all about weight and load when it comes to tires... jmo

RE: Oil Pressure Gauge

Not sure what model SD you have, but last super duty I leased had one of those info centers.Think they had some fancy name for it like productivity center. More info then I needed. Had all the gauge displays, it was configurable. Even had engine oil temp and trans oil temp displays available, along with any other gauge display I could think of. Crazy how much useless info it spewed. I was amazed at its boost gauge hitting 30psi with massive acceleration, all on a stock truck. For me, a life long Chevy guy, its getting harder to keep being a Chevy guy. http://www.ford.com/resources/ford/superduty/2013/equipment/fsd13_models_detailflip_lcd.jpg

RE: 6V vs. 12V

I'm using ten 260 AH 6VDC batteries for a total usable AH capacity of 650 AH's. If you are going to use ten 6 volt batterys at 260 amp/hr each and build a 12 volt system, you would get 1300 amp/hr capacity. 2 X 260 amp/hr in series that's one pair at 12 volt yeilding 260 amp/hr. You will have 5 pairs in parallel were you will add amp/hr capacity 260 X 5 = 1300 total amp/hr capacity. But where will you keep these in a RV, space and weight wise?? Not sure if this what BoonHauler meant when he said "usable AH", but isn't it advisable for best battery life to only use 1/2 of the available AH before recharging? 1/2 of 1300ah = 650ah ? I also am wondering where I would put 10 batteries in my TH. My big agm group 31 weight in at 75lbs each, that would be 750lbs, no way possible for me. 150lbs is almost more than I'm comfortable with now. Guess he must have a spot if he is doing it. That sure would be a nice size power bank, probably wouldn't have to run the genny much at all...

RE: 6V vs. 12V

Ouch! I have no idea what this water stuff means written this way, and I am a physicist! :D I WILL say the 6v batteries are generally thicker of plate and more durable batteries, hence the desire to link two together to make one more durable 12v. Well, lmao... Sorry my analogy of different water pressure, equated too different voltages of our 12v to 6v battery options, didn't go over good. Was just trying to simplify it for those that don't get ohms law. I will say, its not unusual for a physicist to 'not get it'. Funny how such a smarty physicist can't find the quote button to properly quote me... lol But it seems many don't see my analogy, so it must be a bogus one... sorry guys, carry on.

RE: 6V vs. 12V

6Vs is the only way to go for dry camping. Hi, With respect, 6Vs is not the only way nor necessarily the best way. What is needed is to maximize the number of amp-hours of storage. For example in the OEM design of an RV there may be room for 3 batteries. In that case it will always be better to use 12 volt jars as the capacity in amp-hours may be up to 50% greater than what could be obtained using twin six volt jars. The ultimate is to have six TWO volt cells--but this is quite costly to implement. x 2... I agree pianotuna. AH deals only with the amp capacity over time.... Sometimes, the best way to for some to understand this is to compare electricity to water. Voltage (V) is the potential for energy to move and is equivalent to water pressure. Current (I) is a rate of flow and is measured in amps. Ohms (r) is a measure of resistance and is equivalent to the water pipe size. Watts (W) is a measure of power. Imagine you have a tank of water with a hose connected to the bottom. What happens if you increase the pressure inside of this tank? The amount of water flowing out of the hose will also increase. The same is true when you increase voltage, more current will flow, more power will be used/drained If you want to increase the speed of a turning water wheel you can do this in two ways. The first is to increase the water pressure.(v) This will cause the water to hit the wheel with more force. The second is to increase the amount of water hitting the wheel by using a larger amount of water. Both equal More water being used (W). So what does all this mean to us ??? You have connected 2, 6v batteries in series, now they are acting like 1 big 12v battery. The water in the tank is like your battery power, it holds a maximum fixed amount of total water (power), if you pump it out at a higher pressure(voltage) the tank will empty faster. So if your tank holds 5 gallons, and you are pumping out 5 gallons per hour @ 12v, the tank will be empty in in 1 hours. If you turn down the pressure/voltage to 6v now pumping the tank out will take 2 hours. But the same 5 gal of water was used in both cases. Hence 2, 180 amp hour 6v batteries connected in series will up the voltage to 12v(higher pressure) and act just like 1 big 180amp hour battery@12v 2, 90 amp hr 12v batteries wired in parallel will act like 1 big 180 amp hr 12 v battery. The 12v batteries amp hr can be added together since we are not changing the voltage (pressure). No 2 ways about it, double the voltage, divide the amperage in 2. No changing the fact that there is 5 gallons in the tank. Only thing that changes is how fast you pump it out(12v or 6v), which has to change how long it takes to empty the tank. The confusing part for some, is how we measure the 5 gal in the tank... by amp hours at a particular voltage (pressure). jmo

RE: fuel tank vent

I'm not close to my TH,and also want to bring some fuel line next time I'm there. Anyone know what size the fuel line is ???... 5/16" ?

RE: fuel tank vent

My Onan 5500 does the same exact thing. Very strange, and hard to resolve problem, driving me crazy... I've changed the fuel pump. Changed fuel filter. Did the fuel fitting 'up date' on the carb. New Carb. Full tune up, plugs, air filter, oil, etc... HZ and voltage is set perfect. When it runs, it starts quick, runs perfect, runs smooth, and powers 2 a/c no problem, sometimes for hours on end. Have tried the gas cap loose and completely off, no go, same thing. Its done this since I got it. When I first got TH, replaced the carb to get it running at all. Sometimes it will run for 4+ hours. Sometimes only for 1 hour. If you try to restart it, it will start and run for a minute, then shut down. If you shut it off after its been running for a while, and then try to restart it, it will only run for a minute then shut down. If I let it sit for an hour or 2, it will run again for an hour or more. Was told by RV doctor it sounds like fuel line problems. They said it was common for there to be kinks in the line, and or the line to get soft and collapse. So that is my next step, replace the fuel line... I'll let ya know. Keep us posted if you find a solution. jmo

RE: Where can I get those capt chairs

IMO, those expensive 'swivel rockers' aren't all that for the hundreds they cost new. Unless you find some that exactly match your interior and just have to have them you might want to consider what I did when my swivel rockers needed replacement. Go to Wallymart or any office supply stores, and get some cheap, color of your choice, high back or low back office chairs. They are swivel rockers, and have wheels to let them move around easy. They work great for me, actually better, because they can move around easy on their wheels, and they match/complement the colors in my TH well. The microfiber cleans up like new when dirty. Mine cost $65 each at Wallymart, everyone that sits in them says how comfortable they are... http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-Fabric-Office-Chair/17300939#rr http://i2-store.walmart.ca/images/WMTCNPE/710/605/710605_Enlarged_1.jpeg height=480 jmo

RE: towing experienced people needed...

ok, inside my burb is me my wife and the kid, which means a max of 475 lbs, everything will be loaded into the TH. i have a 1600lbs payload, so figuring that my hauler will be 1000lbs on the hitch, i am still within my max payload. also the manufacturer says its a 10% hitch rated TH(if thats real)?? the hauler is 5400 (incl half water and food)), the bikes and gear and clothing is 1200, which brings me to 6600- 6800 maximum....my calculation is to be safe i am calculating about 1000 hitch weight, i am still under the payload max and under my towing max....right?Don't confuse tongue weight with payload capacity... 2 different things. IIRR, a Chevy 1/2 pu has 1000# tongue weight max. Pretty sure a burb has considerably less. Then you have to subtract your loaded payload from the tongue weight capacity. Thats the weight you'll have to work with for your tongue weight.

RE: Need a new mattress

Try looking at the used mattresses at Goodwill or Salvation Army- the prices can't be beat, and if you look a little, you can find a few that aren't stained or mildewed too bad. And don't let a few random stains or skid-marks scare you: you'd be surprised how a good spritzing of bleach and water gets out most of the stains, as well as neutralizing most of the odors and overall funk. However, as a rule, try and stay away from the ones with the black or really dark stains- that's usually dried blood, and that can be a real pain to get out, even if you scrub really hard. "However, as a rule, try and stay away from the ones with the black or really dark stains- that's usually dried blood, and that can be a real pain to get out, even if you scrub really hard". RE: WW FS2300 Heater not working

Does the fan come on when you turn on the fan switch on the t-stat ? Not sure of the middle t-stat position. IIRR, on my WW thats the off position... Might want to verify the t-stat is in the heat position. Snap the T-stat system switch firmly into the heat position and turn up the heat to over 90*... see if it goes on then. Some have the fan come on once the heat exchanger gets heated to a preset temp. On other systems, the fan comes on right away as soon as the t-stat calls for heat. Depends on how its set up.

RE: Replacement LEDs

How hard is it to convert the porch lights in a WW..? What bulb base is used ? Got the 2 WW porch/spot lights with hi/low switch. Was thinking it would be nice to convert one of them to LED on its low beam only setting. That way could still use hi beams of both lights when lots of light was temporarily needed. And then be able to keep it on low beam for 1 led light on all night. Thinking this might take an additional light fixture because not enough room in the oem porch light fixture. Unless I just completely convert 1 light to led on low beam only, and disconnect the other lights low beam wire. Then I could switch on low beam, and only 1 light would come on in LED for an all night low watt draw security light. And still have 1 light with oem WW porch light high beam. What have others done for the porch lights? Can you take pictures of your set-up and bulbs? Unfortunately... no. My WW is in Glamis dunes Storage for the season. I am in South Florida and fly out twice a month for long weekends to play. That is the only time I get to work on it. Thats why the questions, to enable me to bring the correct parts needed to do the conversion when I am there. Already ordered for the inside ceiling lights, 10x 48SMD LED White Panel Light Bulb, T10 Festoon Ba9s Dome Adapters DC12V for $20. Hopefully one of the adapters is correct. If not, I'll solder them in. Looking to order whats needed for the porch spot light LED conversion, but have no idea what bulb is in the 07 WW porch light ? Anyone ???

RE: Sticking with two batteries.....is 6V really better?

......... Its a long shot, but may fry some electronic devices that can't take the higher amperage very low voltage will produce if one 6v partially/completely goes out. Electrical & electronic devices 'draw' current based on device internal resistance and power disipated, not the rated maximum current capacity of the power source. This is basic ohms law. When the voltage goes down (from 12 to 6) the current will also go down as the internal resistance of the device will be unchanged. Generally if the supply voltage goes to 1/2 the amount (from 12 to 6) the current drawn will also drop to half, or less. . Bottom line -- ther is no "higher amperage" produced when your voltage drops. Incorrect Dr Buck, Except for the "Most electronic devices made in the last 15+ years will turn off when the required supply voltage drops below a certain threshold and will not 'fry'... " you're right on that. Thats why I said a "long shot". Think about that though, why do they have that low voltage safety shut off ??? If you want to discuss why, in a current using device,(like a electric motor), amperage goes up when voltage goes down, start another thread, or pm me and I'll explain it to you in detail. jmo
