RE: Net help / Ideas from Military Veterans
You know, I'm a vet myself and not to change the subject, but I feel uneasy about getting recognized for my service. The reason being although my position was subject to going into combat, there was no war when I was in the military other than the cold war. I spent my military time flying all over the world in Air Force cargo planes and staying in hotels. My job was all fun and the Government paid me to do it. I guess one could argue if there had been a war I would have been one of the first ones in, but I also would have been one of the first ones out too. Flying airlift we would deliver the Army to combat and then we would get our rears out of there. I feel uneasy about being recognized as doing something special, when I know many of you were neck deep in mud in Vietnam getting shot at or over in 120 degree heat in the desert having Scud missles shot at you.
I appreciate the gesture when I am reconized for my service but it does also make me uncomfortable in a way, even though I have four combat tours in the middle east as an Army Engineer. Thought maybe it was just me.
What your company does for it employee/veterans is GREAT! To bad their arent more companies like this one.
I agree with the individual gift card idea or also with the donation to an organization.
The Fisher House is a really good one that can always use donations.
RE: Has it REALLY been 35 years...?
I was camping with my parents and grandparents in Apsley, Ontario, but dont remember it as i was 16months old. I only know where I was from my mom telling me
RE: Finally Did It
that's a pretty good size first rig. Have fun, take it easy until you get used to hauling a big trailer like that.
Thanks..... Ive been driving truck hauling heavy construction equipment for just shy of 16yrs, or I wouldnt hauling one this big right off the bat.
Finally Did It
After about 2 years or so of talking about it, DW and I bought our first TH. First travel trailer of any kind actually. Going from tent camping to a 2006 34' Transport 5er. I grew up with parents and grandparents having travel trailers and have wanted one for a long time. Found this one and it fits us just right.
Bought it Saturday, take delivery on Aug 2nd (have to wait that long due to me being out of town later this week).
RE: Who has pictures of............
i dont have a photo but my 10ft tilt 2 place snowmobile trailer looks HILARIOUS behind my crewcab dually, but it gets us to the mountains and in the snow.
RE: Lewis RV, Dayton sez, "Please don't call here again, ma'am!"
Some salesmen can get irritated with a constant barrage of questions from a buyer they consider 'not serious.' Could that be you?
That is NO excuse. Sales is a customer service based business, if someone cant handle questions from a potential customer, if they consider them "Serious" or not, then they are in the wrong profession!
Its not a matter of their opinion of if someone is a serious buyer or not, they never know who is just looking or who has $100,000 burning a hole in the pocket and want something now.
Serious buyer or not, there is no excuse to treat people that way. Losing themselves a potential commission and the dealership the money from a sale and any future potential money from service and accesories.
RE: 06 gearbox
The up and down switches are for the fantastic fans.
I am looking at the same model and year trailer right now, salesman should me what they were because i was curious
RE: Actions that melt my brain
Why do people use the horn chirp when using a key fob to lock or unlock vehicle doors? Isn't the flashing of the parking lights enough? Do they like seeing people jump who happen to be walking by in the parking lot?
It's really annoying when the weather is warm and people are sleeping nearby with the windows open.
My '08 F150 chirps only when the lock button on the fob is pressed twice. A friend's Jeep Liberty chirps on the first press. I agree that the chirp is very annoying. The only time I let my truck chirp is when I've walked away a bit from her and it dawns on me I can't remember if I locked the door or not (I normally do it out of habit but, at my age...).
I dont know about other vehicles, but the first push of the button on my key fob for my truck locks the doors (No horn Chirp) the second push of the button sets and activates the alarm system (horn chirp).
If that little chirp of the horn "Wakes" someone up that has their windows open, then you were never really asleep.
RE: These Guys have Guts
Amazing and totally nuts. That guy who flew off the road must have died.
If you look down in the description of the video under it, it says nobody was killed in the crashes, even though watching it, I would have thought so
RE: Any Crawlers on here?
YEP... Crawling is what we do too. Though my Jeep is nowhere near what yours is, it takes us where we want to go, and we have a blast doing it. Most of our camping trips are based around offroading.
RE: Duck Dynasty...
This show is great!!!!!!
To me it seems like a group or good folks that have made it for themselves through honest hard work, and it hasnt gone to their heads.
I am sure we dont see all the behind the scenes stuff that goes on, but I truely believe the way they are portrayed is the way they are. Im sure some things are played up a little for the camera, but in general its a good family that have worked for their living and had as much fun as possible along the way.
And its HILARIOUS!!!!!!
RE: Fed Up with Campgrounds Charging Extra for Kids
If 6 per site is your limit, then so be it and i dont think that is unreasonable, but if I pull in, with my DW and OUR kids and I start getting charged for the site fee, then for 3 kids at X amount of $ per child/per night. That is when the transaction will stop and I will return to my rig and head on down the road.
This line of reasoning makes absolutely no sense to me. Not at all.
So let's say you pull into a campground that charges a flat $30 per night, regardless of the size of the party. You think that's an okay price for what you're getting, so you decide to stay.
But if the same campground charged $18 per night plus $4 extra for each of your three children -- so your total was the same $30 per night -- you'd think it isn't fair? :h
ANYONE that does this for their rates whether public or private campground/resort is not in business to provide a service while making an honest living. They are in it strictly for the profit and nothing more. I understand a business is a business to make a profit and cant operate at a loss, but to do it and be greedy about it, is another story.
There's absolutely no way you can know that w/o having access to every single campgrounds' financial information. Which I doubt you have.
The bottom-line for us is looking at the bottom-line: How much will it cost us per night to stay at a given campground. We don't care one whit how they arrive at that price (whether it's a higher per night fee or a lower per night fee with "extras" added on). If we think the per night price is reasonable we stay. If not, we find something else. Simple as that.
I guess I should have stated it a little different.
If such and such campground, advertises their rate as say $30/night and my family and i pull in to stay then that is what i expct to pay, if the rate is advertised as $18/night then that is what i expect to pay.
Not have it advertised as $18 or $30 or whatever the price per night is and then it becomes $18+$4+$4+$4 or whatever it is that said campground charges per night then adds to it.
RE: Fed Up with Campgrounds Charging Extra for Kids
I am with the OP on this one if the extra charges were for his children. A family...dad, mom and children (or any combination) should be one charge. If granny, pops, auntie or uncle or neighbors children are in the mix then and only then should there be extra charges.
As someone else srated, when there is just one or two adults the price does not decrease. CG's are making FULL price on parties with one or two adults. That excess more than covers the party that has more children IMHO.Do you carry your childrens birth certificates and photo IDs? How in the heck do we know if the kids are yours and not the neighbors? I can count to six, but I cannot run DNA tests to validate parentage. Of course, you wouldn't tell "a little white lie" to save a few dollars, but I bet some people would. The more people in the park, the more labor I need, the more supplies I go through, the more utilities are used, the more hassles I have. I will continue to limit the number of people on each site, and if a park uses extra fees instead of hard limits to either accomplish the same thing, or to cover off those costs, that seems perfectly legitimate.
Funny you should ask... As My children all have photo ID, and it is carried with us anytime we go anywhere. Their ID all have my name on them listing them as my military dependents.

RE: What is considered too much dog barking?
Here's one... this weekend we were at a site beside a motorhome with two barking dogs when owners left frequently. One dog jumped into the drivers seat and barked and honked the horn almost continuously! Now that was a first. Finally spoke to the CG owners and they were not as concerned as I would have liked but the problem did get a little better. Dogs really should be left at home.
I believe your last sentence may have opened a can of worms that you didnt expect. There are alot of people on here that camp with their pets, be it dogs, cats, birds or whatever their pet is.
If you have children...They really should be left at home.
If you are married...Your spouse really should be left at home.
My dogs camp with me. They are part of my family. I would no more go camping without them, then I would go without my DW or our children.
They are as gentle as can be, and almost as large as you can get (2 Great danes)
They do not bark needlessly, or at people/pets walking by.
They will bark occasionally but not on and on for no reason.
If you dont like people having pets around. Go somewhere that has a no pet policy, but dont expect me to leave my dogs at home because you think "Dogs should really be left at home"
RE: Personal Question $$$
Something no one has mentioned is. If you use financing wisely, besides getting you out and camping with the kids before they grow up.
It can allow you to buy a "better, newer" RV. That does not break down all the time and need major repairs constantly. Interest you pay can pale in comparison
to trying to keep one of those on the road. Not to mention the hassel and stress.
I am just against folks going way overboard to buy an RV, and stressing the rest of their life to make the payments.
X2
RE: Personal Question $$$
After my 10 year loan is paid off in another 4 years I will have paid an extra $2800 on our camper in interest. That averages out to $280 a year. Pretty cheap if you ask me. If I would have saved up money every month and waited until I had enough to pay cash for it. I would have missed the past 6 years of camping and making memories my kids will remember for a lifetime. So I would have to say if your the type that want to save up until you can pay cash for it then more power to you but for an extra $280 a year I would rather be out camping with my family than sitting home getting old.
Of all the posts on here...This one sums up my feelings exactly!!!
Currently have a TC that I paid next to nothing for, also currently looking at used 5th wheel TH and will be buying within the next couple of months. Have a decent amount of money to spend on one, and can probably find one and be able to pay cash, but if we find something we want and have to finance some of it to get the one we want, then so be it.
Myself, DW, and 3 kids will be out camping, and making our monthly affordable payments, smiling the whole time and making camping/traveling memories, while some sit at home waiting to be able to tell themselves "I PAID CASH", just to be able to pat themselves on the back.
My snowmobiles= paid for with cash
motorcycle= paid for with financing
Truck= couple more payments and its mine
Jeep= paid off
Truck camper= paid cash
The fun we have had using all of these things is worth all the amounts of financing put together plus more....
Just because I have financed purchases does not make us irresponsible, or living beyond our means.
We go into it fully knowing the depreciation on financed purchases and what finance charges are going to cost.
BUT
there are times that all that added up doesnt come near costing more than the enjoyment we get out of it.
