RE: Pictures of slightly damaged Tow Vehicle....Need advice

From my experience - hitches are not always stronger than truck frames... My '01 Ram got rear ended by a Chevy 6500 dump truck - wrapped the hitch like a pretzel and pushed it into the spare tire and the spare tire into the shocks... Frame was put on a machine and not bent - the thought was the hitch saved the frame.

RE: Suggestion for Tow Vehicle and RV

My .02 and agree with the above and been in the similar situation:
- personally would prefer a 3/4 ton but didn't like the reduced gas mileage (gasser) or increased upfront cost (diesel) for a daily driver
- my 1/2 ton Hemi does great in the mountains of PA pulling 6K
- watch class 2 stickers in PA - 7K lbs... I'm over that with family... need a class 3 if you get a 3/4 ton. If you pull over 10K you have to get the combination sticker
- safe vs 100% legal is an entirely different subject (this could go on and on for days about GVWR, GCVWR, GAWR, ect)
- I stay under axle, tire and towing limits and have always had comfortable trips.
- 28+ range with a slide would be ideal size

RE: Used Diesel Prices?

I found the same insane used diesel pricing and I didn't want a truck with 80K miles on it and already half worn out (driveline and body, not engine).
That's just it. A 80K diesel vehicle is not worn out. I now have 215K on a diesel I purchased with 84K on it. This truck will last for at least 300K. Diesels are built to last. That's partially why they cost more. Many trade their diesel vehicles after 5 years or so and truly never get the full benefit/value of their diesel.
I agree the engine isn't... I did make that disclaimer - but have also owned 100K miles plus trucks and know what a PITA ball joints, tie rod ends, u-joints, body, ect can be ;)

RE: Used Diesel Prices?

I'll echo the above posters - when finances allowed it I bought a brand new '07 5.9l diesel 4x4 due to the small difference in pricing to used. Had to get rid of it and was looking for a replacement 'used' vehicle. I found the same insane used diesel pricing and I didn't want a truck with 80K miles on it and already half worn out (driveline and body, not engine). Found a nice Laramie 4x4 w/ 20K miles on it for 20K - to me unless you're pulling heavy (8K+) and often (10K/yr miles) the diesels just don't make much sense anymore.

RE: one more, diesel vs gas question

I agree - I've owned two Cummins ('01 & '07) and would have loved to still own one - but at a $7-$10K hit and higher diesel fuel prices (than gas) the payback just isn't there anymore...

RE: WOW - wonder how it will do with a 5er?

skup had a link for this oh maybe 2-3 weeks ago......
Marty
Correct - But I didn't recall seeing the 'legal' payload update... Just still think it's nuts that that small of a truck can haul that much!

WOW - wonder how it will do with a 5er?

Check out the link - 2700 lb payload is more than most diesel 2500's... Just wondering how it will handle that big 5er?

RE: Are there quality RVs that will last?

Are there any class C or B+ RVs manufactured by companies that produce quality cars like Toyota or Mercedes?
I guess my Chevy Cavalier with 170K miles on it isn't a quality car? You have a valid question but not a valid analogy... Last I recall Mercedes were way down in the quality ratings...

RE: 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton gas mileage differences

To answer your question directly, both pulling same trailer - Both newer Ram's 5.7l's - QC 4x4's, short beds, 3.92 (1500) vs 4.10 (2500)
1500 - 8-10 towing, 16-19 empty
2500 - 7-9 towing, 13-16 empty
Basically you lose more empty than loaded - but this is partially due to the MDS (cylinder deactivation is only on 1500's), heavier base weight, worse aerodynamics (sits higher) and no fuel economy requirements (bumper spoilers, tailgate spoilers, ect on the 1500)

RE: types of trucks

Agreed - all good trucks but all got their issues... Mostly brand loyalty and what you like the looks/feel of the best. Many of the same suppliers design & manufacture parts for all three (brakes, suspension, electrical, ect)

RE: 1/2 ton payload

Agreed - IMO I feel over 50% of the '1/2 tons' towing average size travel trailers are over some 'limits' somewhere... Myself included - But I enjoy the better ride and better MPG of the 1500...

RE: need truth about what I can tow

I think everyone has their own definition of 'struggle' - personally I don't mind having my engine run at 3500-5200 RPM on the hills, as a small block gasser that's where they make their power. I pull 6000 lbs without any issues and have pulled 8000-10000 lbs with these engines...

RE: cash for clunkers

My biggest concern on this is most road worthy vehicles are worth $2-$3K anyways - so it's really only another $1K-2K off the price of a new vehicle... If you can't afford 15K payments how is 13K going to be significantly different? Also still surprises me the vehicles lined up that got traded in - would have thought they could have easily got $4500 selling them outright or trade in without the program!

RE: Jayco 26P/Dodge Durango Combo Questions

My trailer is 27' & 6000lbs ready to camp... agree with above posters that you will be close to limits but should be fine - just get a good WD hitch and sway control. Also may want to upgrade the 'P' tires...
