trailer 'balance'?

Might be a dumb question but my dealer couldn't give me a good answer.
I just bought a new 18' Haulmark enclosed trailer.
My question, I guess, is an enclosed trailer vs open set up to have different 'balance'?
I noticed the tires of my new enclosed 18' trailer appear to be more rearward than my open single place of the same length. After a few measurements I was correct and the open has the tires about 10" forward of where they are on the enclosed . The enclosed trailer is 123" from the front wall to the middle of the front tire and 99 to the rear wall. The open deck I compared to is 113ish and 109ish
I was curious and called my dealer who told me "I don't know why the do that, different manufacturers do it differently" Well no kidding!
So is this designed into the trailer for some reason or ????

RE: Truck camping on othe beach

Here's three nice articles from Truck Camper Magazine:
http://www.truckcampermagazine.com/off-road-expeditions/jim-duarte-camping-on-sandy-neck-beach
The last one, you might recognize... :-)
that's my favorite! Must be because I'm in a lot of the pictures!!
Jim you should tell the Tropical Storm weekend story...oh and the Hurricane weekend one too! You must have pictures of both of those!

I'd also like to add with a tide chart and a decent weather report there really is little guessing or chance to it. It's more science than guess work.
Also for all you beach guys swing by your local big rig shop, they have a salt remover product. I think it's Salt Away. If I wasn't using my phone for this post I would check my photobucket pictures. I'll link it when I can. You can spray prior and post exposure to limit corrosion.

RE: Truck camping on othe beach

This is as close as we have come.....Mine is out of the picture...But this is not the norm. This was extremely high tide aggravated by STRONG onshore winds. All of which gave us more than enough time to get off if we thought we were in danger of sinking!

RE: Truck camping on othe beach

You is you and Me is me, but personally I would never invest the kind of money you are talking about and then drive it on any beach. See the previously posted pics for worst case but to me all cases of vehicles and salty sand and salty air and salty water are taboo. I have seen many vehicles rot away over the years when living near the ocean. Sure, you can clean it, but you can clean your teeth too, but still pay the dentist office for professional cleaning and any vehicle on the beach will need professional cleaning often IMHO.
yeah for sure! If the beaches around here said no more camping on the beach I'd most likely sell and go back to a hotel! Its a way of life!
Edit: I see your from Northern GA....your just not used to what we call 'normal' up here for rust! You might as well be driving in the ocean when driving in a winter storm while they are salting...the beach is nothing!

RE: Truck camping on othe beach

Nothing like camping on the beach!!
My one suggestion to you is pay attention to tank size. On of the reasons I bought my 992 was, at the time, it had some of the biggest tanks on the market. Even now Chalet and others have more fresh water but only similar gray tanks.
I would go with a full one-ton truck and SRW or DRW depeding on your other needs. I chose the DRW as I tow also.

RE: Torklift vs Stock hitch.

I'm not seeing a 17.5k receiver hitch. I see the base hitch is a 12.5k 2" receiver for SRW gas that was introduced in 2005. It then goes to a 2.5" receiver rated at 14K for SRW diesel, 15K for DRW gas or 18.5k for DRW diesel.
yeah sorry thats confusing. All the window stickers on the trucks I have looked at for 2013 DRW's all say 17.5k BUT when I pulled up that ford page it says 18.5k.
I'm not sure why.

RE: Torklift vs Stock hitch.

yeah thats why I was asking originally, seeing the new ones are rated at 17.5K which is substantailly higher than the 'old' days
My plan is to take of the Superhitch, just trying to decide if I should sell it or put it in place of the Ford one. I'll probably just swap over since according to Torklifts site its the same part number.
WOW a new truck that is great.:C
I know there has been talk of here before about that and I think the general thought was that the stock hitches were not really designed for an extension. Now that doesn't say that thinking is right.
I would take the Super Hitch off and put the stock one back on. I know they are heavy and a job but if this Old F**t can do it with a bad right shoulder than most people should be able to do it. Invite a buddy over for a beer and while he is there say "By the way have you got a minute to help me out." Then put him to work helping you.:W

RE: Torklift vs Stock hitch.

Hmmm good idea. Thanks.
I guess if worse comes to worst Torklift has the same part number listed for the 2006 and 2013 so I can just transfer it over.
Why not get the dealer to do the swap as part of the sales deal. It gets done and you don't have to roll around on the ground swapping hitches.
Brian
Mainly because I dont want it to become part of the negotiation. I'd rather have it off my truck and put the stock one back on first.

RE: Torklift vs Stock hitch.

yep looks like weight carrying is 8,500 with 850 tounge, weight distibuting is 18.5 with a max tounge of 1850.
My trailer is about 7k loaded and I'd be using a WD hitch.
I would imagine that the Ford 17,500# rating is for a weight distributing hook up, not for weight carrying.
Is the 7000# load you are considering weight carrying or distributing?
Typically on a pure weight carrying application, a 24" extension would reduce your capacity by 1/2- you would still be OK.
I would be interested to hear if anyone associated with Ford would be willing to give you an official answer. Just curious.

RE: Torklift vs Stock hitch.

You may want to ask the Ford fleet guys about a document showing hitch ratings with extensions and see what they can find for you.

Torklift vs Stock hitch.

I have been looking at 2013 F-350's recently.
I see that their top level hitch is rated at 17.5K. I currently have a Torklift 17K model on my 2006 F-350.
Thought on using the stock Ford 17.5k unit for towing 7k or so with a 24inch extention?
On the face it seems like it shouldnt be a problem but I am the farthest thing from an engineer so I thought I should get some input!
Thanks

RE: Truck Camper Slideouts - Are They Really Worth It?

Only 7 out of 148 people with air or water leaks on their slides according to a poll on the Northwoods Owners site.
The only time I have had a water leak on either of my slides was in a Tropical Storm and the rain was blowing sideways at 50+ mph.

RE: Lance vs Arctic Fox

gee with all those negatives I should really hate my 2 slides!! to each his own, I would NEVER own a camper without a slide, or three!
The DW really wanted a slide, and I have to admit that sitting in one I kept thinking Dammit!, she is right, this is really nice. After almost pulling the trigger twice on the Lance 855s, we ended up with a NL that fit our truck. Even the DW will admit now that we feel we have plenty of room without the slide. There is just the two of us but we are reaaaaaly happy with our decision. BTW, we spent a bunch of time looking at AF and Lance models and thought that AF held the edge in interior.
If you want to maintain that happiness, please repeat:
More propane is required to heat the space created by a slide.
A slide doesn't provide any additional storage space.
A slide adds more weight.
A slide is another moving part to go wrong.
A slide tends to leak heat.
A slide is another point for water penetration.
A slide is an added expense.
You made a good choice. :)

RE: Airing down?

After seeing all these photos, I am sooooo dang jealous of you folks with "normal" wheels & tires! :(
This is as close as I can get to the beach with my TC & 19.5" tires (notice the asphalt just in front of my truck)

I know one guy who does it regularly with 19.5's and know of another that does it with no adverse effects.
My tire guy said no way, but I'd sure like to upgrade to a 450/550 someday but cant lose that ability.
