RE: Bear bell for dog?

Most tracking collars use satellite driven. The dog wears the collar that bounces the signal back to a hand held device the person carries. The long range devices can be up to 9 miles but that is open spaces. When you start to get into heavier foliage it is anywhere between 4-7 miles. The newer ones can also alert you to a dog in trouble and you can set a boundary for your dog and if they go out of that area it will alert you. If you have a multiple dog pack you can get ones that will track that and you are still only carrying one hand held device.

RE: Cold (limber) tail

My English Pointer has had this happen a couple times - I give her Rimadyl for a day or 2 and make her rest and they will back to normal.
Here are some examples of what causes it:
Exposure to cold wet weather
Under conditioning and then a high level of activity,
Extensive swimming in breeds that use their tail for swimming, especially if water is cold
Being in a crate for long periods of time

RE: Yellow Dog Project

Every dog has the potential of being a reactive dog to some extent. People think their dog would never react negatively to anyone well these people need to open their eyes and understand these are animals after all. It only takes once for the friendliest dog to meet someone they do not like their smell, clothing, another dog and it can set them off. There is also a difference between a reactive dog and a vicious dog. A person with a reactive dog is asking for space for their dog due to health, age or circumstances that people who do not know this dog are not familiar with. People need to change their thoughts that all strange dogs are friendly they are not. This also needs to be a lesson taught to children.
BTW- My dog is not what most would think as a reactive dog breed - he is a GSP. He has traveled the states with us in our motorhome without incident because I am vigilant about my surrounds.

RE: Yellow Dog Project

Sorry but there are those of us that have reactive dogs and we are not going to lock them away in a backyard to never see the world. It is my job as a dog owner to be vigilant of my surrounding area when I am out with my reactive dog and protect him. It is the rest of the people's job to respect my space when I ask them not to approach my dog or let there dog near mine. Welcome to the planet earth - respect is the key learning here.

RE: New to this

How great you adopted a senior good for you & her :-)
The pooping on a leash is a big one (good call Code2High) Our EP did not poop for 4 days on her first motorhome trip because of being on a leash and it was not pretty on the 5th day. She is an old pro now.
No ESP the OP mentioned they adopted a Brittany. GSP = German Shorthaired Pointer & EP = English Pointer both birddogs :-)
Happy travels with your new dog

RE: New to this

Congrats on adopting a birddog - I have a GSP & EP :-). How old is she and is she a retired hunter? All birddogs are quite active and a tired birddog is a happy dog. We used the gentle leader with our EP but they both will pull if given the chance. If while you are on the road you can find an open space to let her run off lead that will help burn off her energy. Would love to see a picture of her.

RE: Update on those time bombs...

No he is the adult and that makes him the caregiver. She is a kid and in my first post I addressed this. Kids want what they want and then get bored and move on - that is life and ever parent has seen it.
Some of his dogs had such damage that the choice had to be made to destroy them. His dogs did not have a choice to be made that way he trained them to be like that and thankfully many were able to be retrained to led outstanding examples of how a dog can be rehabbed, but some that were rehabbed still carry the fear.
Vick did this to these dogs what does that say about his mental state of mind.
You believe one thing and I believe another and that is ok.
Again I will ask the question if this was not Vick but an regular person who lived near you would be so quick to applaud them and say they have changed?

RE: Update on those time bombs...

IMHO - There are some crimes in which people can not be rehabilitated - ex: violence or abuse against another human or an animal. There is something in these people that view this type of action ok and they might control it for awhile but it is always there and we do not know what little thing will make them snap and do the action again.

RE: Update on those time bombs...

Thank-You for your posting - I try to keep up with The Lost Dogs on FB.
IMHO it is a privilege to own an animal not a right and Vick lost that right the minute he abused his dogs. In the real world we say the kids will take of the animal but as parents we all know as time goes on we are the primary care givers for that animal. Unfortunately sometimes as kids we must pay for the sins of our fathers.
Let me ask a question to all those out there saying he should have another animal - If this was a person who lived down the street from you who used animals for dog fighting, abused or was a hoarder of animals would you be so quick to say "Heck yeah let them have another animal?
Do I feel for the first couple years his dog will be watched closely how it is treated heck yeah but as the years go on it will be forgotten.
If Michael Vick wanted to show the world he has changed he would have thrown himself into rescue, volunteering and becoming a spokesman for the animals because he wanted to not because he was court ordered to.
The groups that helped with, fostered and adopted the dogs are the really heroes here. I applaud you all.

RE: Dog limitations at RV Parks

It also depends on what time of year you travel. Off season I do not think you have the same problem with number of dogs as you do with high season. We travel off season with 2 Pointers & a hound (it use to be 2 hounds) and never have been turned away. We have been told that if it was high season we would not be allowed but that is ok because there is always another camp ground down the road :-)

RE: Did you switch and then go back?

Yes I had gone back to food before after a change but you are talking about a dog with Pancreatitis and the fat % needs to stay under 10% you can not find that in grain free food and just cutting back on higher fat food is not the answer with a dog suffering from Pancreatitis especially when you are first dealing with the issue. The only food we food was Innova with a 8% fat - our dog who has Pancreatitis did really well on this food and it was also recommended by our vet not to introduce other food (rice, potatoes etc) until some time later.
