RE: Roll Call Alaska 2013

Girls Scout motto...Be Prepared!!!
Make sure we have Water and Food, if we have to hold up for a few days, then enjoy life!
Not leaving until mid June from Michigan. Can't wait, the adventure is part of the fun. If we wait for guaranteed perfect weather, we would never leave home.
See you on the road, Betsy

RE: Easy individual micro cakes

I have to laugh when reading this. CAMP COOKING includes a microwave!
Sorry we have small camper and don't have micro on our travels. Enjoy old fashion DO and cooking over open fire. If all else fails we find a restaurant.

RE: TC / Where to Buy a Rear Seat Storage System?

It fits tight enough I don't expect it to go any place. I guess you would call it made to fit. Lit has hinges so it won't fly off.

RE: Roll Call Alaska 2013

Never travel with fire wood even in US. To dangerous for the trees. We lost probably 20+ ash trees to emerald ash borers a few years ago. Just because it is dead wood, doesn't mean it is safe. Here in Michigan you can't even take to upper peninsula. There are a lot of dangerous insects in dead trees.

RE: Roll Call Alaska 2013

I find part of the fun of traveling is buying local Wines. But do admit it rarely comes home with us. My Husband looks for local Beer. Don't see a reason to take more then 1-2 bottles from home. When crossing borders don't try to hide/lie about what you have. I have crossed back into US with a couple bottles from Ontario with no problems.

Packing Clothes for layers

Should we invest in a good waterproof raincoat? We have water resistant jackets and the inexpensive plastic raincapes that fold up in little package, great for backpack. We are totally aware we need to be prepared for weather changes and the need to layer clothes. Living in Michigan we are used to that idea. Wondering about need for a 'Real Rain Coat'. Trying not to over-pack but be prepared. Only so much room in Truckcamper, but we love it.
Got comfortable shoes and waterproof hiking boots read for trip.
Thanks Betsy and Bill

Very Easy to do a copy/paste of the logo above.
Right click over Logo click copy. Then go to word program and right click where you want it and right click paste. Add rest of your info.
Not fancy but works.

Staying in touch...

With the lack of comunication to family and friend on trip we have planned ahead. For Christmas we bought North America maps for Presents, and mounted on Foam Board. When we can, we will send Emails of our locations, so they can keep track of us. Figure it will be good for grandkids, helping understand a little geography.
We also send alot of post cards! Some postcards we buy and alot we make, print photo's and glue to index card. The homemade postcards are a big hit by all. We have a little stuffed animal we hide in photos, they love looking for him...;)

RE: Cell phone recommendations

We live on boarder to Ontario. I text, if I feel the need when we cross the boarder. It only cost a few Cents extra. Also, if no service, it gets sent when it picks up a signal.
Plan to turn phones off, Email when we can....roaming just drains battery. Have all ready informed Kids and GrandKids we will send a post card.

RE: Montreal to Detroit or Sault Ste Marie

Totaly agree Tahquamenon Falls SP, upper and lower are totally different. There is a walking trail between the 2. Camping at lower falls and Good Resturant at upper falls.
ShipwreckTours This is a must see boat tour. Amazing to see all the old ships that sunk over 100 years ago in Lake Superior. Cold water has preserved them.
Want info on LP just ask. Middle, sunrise side or Sunset side, lots to see.

Sounds to me like most people that have Chips and Ding, etc problems are on a Race not a Road trip to see the country. Be prepared YES but....slowing down might help!

RE: Montreal to Detroit or Sault Ste Marie

Blue Water Bridge from Sarnia, Ontario to Port Huron, Michigan. Beautiful Spot. Crossing you can see out into Lake Huron. Sault Ste Marie is a Beautiful spot also. I would Avoid Detroit.
Blue Water Bridge is about 1 hour north of Detroit. Anyway Michigan is a beautiful state.
Question? Do you have anything you plan to see in Michigan. Being surounded by water, it is a unique/beautiful state. I could go on and on. Every great Lake is different, not to mention all the small lakes.

RE: Sue T's - Border Crossing 'Dash Folder'

We cross border to Ontario quite often, usually quick glance at passport and ask how long we will be in Canada and that is it. Sometimes they are just in the mood to ask questions.
HINT: Have passport info and anything else they might want to see in your hand as you pull up to customs. Don't wait until they ask, then dig it out.
Also, If anyone in car has sunglasses on Remove them. Eye contact makes process smoother. If you have a back seat roll window down as you approach. Little things they don't have to ask you to do.
The insurance is for you in case of emergency, shouldn't have to show it. We do not need any extra insurance paper-work. But best to call your insurance company to make sure.
Save receipts for any purchases you make in Canada, they will ask if you made any purchases.
Happy Travels, Betsy
