RE: What is it? (photo included)

It looks like a home-made mini-bus conversion. The 3rd axle looks to be an aftermarket tag, presumably because the weight of the slide/porch is too much for the rear of the bus.

RE: Gulf State Park Tennis Courts

They told us back at Labor Day that it would all be completed about the same time early next spring - around March. We'll see. They said last spring that the pool was going to be ready by Memorial day and ground still wasn't broken on it in Sept.
I'm amazed they got the infrastructure of the campground rebuilt so fast after Ivan. AL state parks are notorious for taking way too long to build and renovate things, as can be witnessed by this delay.

RE: What's to See in Arkansas?

One of the things we keep talking about doing is to get over there to Crater of the Diamonds State Park. Just haven't worked it out yet. But I seem to recall that the campground is closed for renovations. Might want to check on that.

For Vestavia Hills, I would use Oak Mountain State Park. Its just a few miles down I-65 from there in Pelham.

RE: 16' or 17' with side bed?

If its exactly what you want, I agree that you'd probably make out better by going to get it. We basically did the same in reverse - we found a used HTT in California that was exactly what we were looking for at the time (our previous Cub) and turned it in to road trip to pick it up - seeing Yosemite and Grand Canyon as part of the trip. We spent about $2200 in fuel - which is about the amount we saved on the HTT over anything we could find around here. Even at well over $3/gal, the fuel alone was still much less than we could find someone to ship it for us.

RE: Fold out bed types ?

I may be wrong, but I think the Thermarest beds are/were only available on Cub and Kodiak models. I don't ever remember seeing them available on anything from Starcraft or Jayco.
From what I've seen posted here, people either love them or hate them. They don't look all that appealing to me. I have seen new Cubs and Kodiaks with both types of tent. So, I guess they are trying to keep everyone happy.

RE: Possible Bad advice from camping store

Even when I had my light little 19' Cub and didn't need a WDH, I didn't go without sway control. After having a PUP that was prone to sway on the interstate, I wasn't going to take chances with a larger trailer. I never ran without it, so I don't know if I really needed it or not. I just wasn't going to take chances.

RE: Gulf State Park Campground Gulf Shores,AL

September (after Labor Day weekend) would be an ideal time. Kids are back in school and the snowbirds haven't showed up yet. Should be lots of room.

RE: Gulf State Park Campground Gulf Shores,AL

All sites are full hookups with 30A & 50A service. The campground has been completely rebuilt after it was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan a few years back, so all sites have been repaved and upgraded and all bath houses have been refurbished or rebuilt.
By next spring they should have the new store, laundry & nature center built along with a pool (of course, the said that about this past spring too...).
Beach access to the beach is by the park road, but IRC, there is a bike lane.
Just beware - if you are looking for lots of shade, you won't find it. Most of the big trees were taken down by the hurricane, so shade is little to non-existent.

RE: Pet urine in RV & Montana Supreme Court ruling.

I have to agree with others that said there is no way to hide that smell if it is as bad as the article states and have it come back later. We had a male kitten that decided to start marking his territory once he reached a certain age (upon which he was promptly fixed) and you could smell a single incident all throughout the house until we found the spot to disinfect.

RE: Beaches of Alabama

There are no campgrounds on the beach in AL. Luxury RV in Gulf Shores is the closest to the beach - within walking distance. Gulf State Park campground is really nice and only a short drive or bike ride to the beach and pier.
New Orleans is a few hour drive from Gulf Shores.

RE: Great Smoky Mountains to Close Cades Cove Loop Road....

I'm glad to see this. We were just on it last weekend and the road is really getting bad. I'm happy to see that it will remain a single lane road too. Elkmont CG's roads are in even worse shape so I hope they have a plan to fix those soon too.

RE: long distance vacation results?

We've taken two major trips, 15 days each.
1) We purchased an HTT off of ebay that happened to be in California so we turned the pickup into a road trip for the family. We took 3 days to get from AL to CA, stopping San Antonio (long enough to see Riverwalk and Alamo) and El Paso. Then we stayed in Orange County a couple nights to shakedown the HTT, giving the kids a chance to swim in the Pacific Ocean. Then off to Sequoyia NP and on to Yosemite for a few days. Next was Las Vegas for a night and on to the Grand Canyon for a few more days. Then on home, stopping at Painted Desert/Petrified Forest NP and several other tourist traps on the 3 day trek home. A lot to see in 2 weeks, but it all went off without a hitch.
2) We loved the last trip so much we decided to take another one (after a 3 yr break). This time the highlights were to be Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone. We stopped outside of St Louis the first night, seeing the Gateway Arch, then stopping outside of Omaha the next night. We drove through Badlands NP on the way into the Black Hills where we stayed a few nights seeing Mt. Rushmore, Custer SP, Crazy Horse & Deadwood before heading to Cody WY (seeing Devils Tower on the way) Then on to Yellowstone for a few days, Grand Tetons for a couple more then to Colorado Springs for a couple more before the 3 day drive home.
I wish I could say that the second trip was as uneventful (as far as problems go) but it wasn't. Each day brought us another problem, but we were always able to get over it and keep going and still had a great time.
Do I recommend trying to cram this much in to two weeks? Absolutely not. But some of us simply can't stretch it out any further due to work and other commitments so its our only option.
We're now saving up to fly to Alaska and rent an RV for 2 weeks and see as much of that great state as we can - again probably after a 3 yr break. :)

RE: Gulf State Park Campground Gulf Shores,AL

First, make sure you can get in. The snowbirds fill it up all winter and from what I heard, all reservable sites are booked Nov - Mar. There are quite a few first-come first-served sites that they leave unreserved. You just need to call them to see the chance of getting a site during your planned visit.
As for things to do - there is a ton. There is fishing off the state pier, the amusment area for the kids with all kinds of games and go cart tracks and such. The Wharf is down towards Orange Beach and has lots of shops and restaurants. For history buffs there is Fort Morgan nearby and the USS Alabama is about a 45-minute drive away. There is outlet shopping in Foley just a few miles north of Gulf Shores. Literally something for everyone.

RE: Clamps that hold end's closed

Welcome to the forums, and to the world of HTTs. :)
Your best bet is to do as bikendan said - swap them out for cargo latches. That was the first mod I did to my '03 Coyote when we bought it this spring.
Do a search here on the forum for "bunk latches" and you'll find a ton of info including where to order them and how to install them.

RE: Birmingham AL seasonal site advice needed

Hoover RV Park is next to the Hoover baseball stadium. Their website says their monthly rate is about $480 incl. taxes. Never stayed there so I can't say its a good place to stay, but Hoover is a nice area.

RE: elkmont site info

When are you going? I'll be there Sat - Tues and can look if that's soon enough. My experience with the site descriptions on Nat. Park reservation site is that they are usually right on - meaning if they say the max length of the vehicle for that site is 35', you better not be 36' or you'll be sticking out in the road.

RE: 5 lb Propane bottles

When I saw the prices listed here, I pretty much gave up on the idea and will just lug the extra 20 lb tank I have - we used it on our 2-week cross-country trip back in the late spring. The reason I was looking at this was for a small propane heater. The pounders don't last a full night in it, but I figured a 5 lb bottle would last all weekend.
On the subject of reusing the pounders, I once tried filling a couple of those them but haven't had much success in getting enough in them to matter. I even tried the trick of throwing the bottles in the freezer and sitting the 20lb tank in the sun. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

We thought about doing that this year, but then my nephew moved his wedding to that weekend. DW is catering the rehearsal dinner and is helping with the reception, so that knocked out that idea. Maybe next year...
