RE: What is this valve for?

I'm guessing that the line thru the floor is your low point drain, and that there's a tee in the line that you can't see.

RE: Folks from up north must think we're nuts

I lived in Farmington NM for a short time, and a snow storm there shut everything down. The problem is that no one is prepared or knows how to drive on it, and even if you are prepared and know how, you can't get past those who are stuck.
Usually our first winter storm (in Alaska) will put a lot of people in the ditch because they haven't changed to winter tires yet. It doesn't seem to matter how late the first snow comes, it's a surprise to some.

RE: HOw many days with a 30 gallon black tank?

How do you look in the black tank and check level?
On some RV's you can push the flush lever and look straight down to the black tanks contents and see exactly how full it is. Others, have an elbow and makes it impossible to view.
But....you asked only about the black tank so I assume you aren't worried about the gray water. But normally, the gray tank fills three or four times as fast as the black.
Gray tank is full in about 2 days, but can be dumped pretty easily (and legally i'm told) .I've been the next occupant of the muddy site and was somewhat less than impressed!

There are a lot of variables, but we easily get a 3 day weekend and we have grandkids.
I never believe my gage, it's wrong as much as rite.

RE: Another Battery Question

If you have that much parasitic draw, I would install a battery disconnect switch along with your new battery.
As the other Dave says, only a small number of MH's actually charge the chassis battery from the converter. The only time the batteries are tied together is when the engine is running or the boost switch is pressed.

RE: Electrical Problem

The inverter has nothing to do with charging the batteries (could be in the same box as the converter, but they have different functions). If it works from shore power but not from the gen. the first thing to check would be the output voltage of the gen. and I wouldn't use the gen. until you figure it out.

RE: I watched some idiot dump his trailer off the hitch today.

that's just too funny.
you must have really really good eyesight.
I have a hard time telling a 2 inch trailer ball from a 2 5/16 inch trailer ball even when standing looking directly at it.
yet you could tell from the drivers seat of your vehicule wow eagle eye..
geez pete,
it was just a guess
"I can't say for sure, but it looked like they were towing a 2 5/16" hitch trailer with a 2" ball. "
Relax, Christmas break is coming up:CAnd BTW, what's the most common reason a trailer comes off the ball?

RE: Installing a shutoff valve in the toilet water supply

Nothing wrong with adding a shut off but I'd STILL recommend fixing the actual PROBLEM. I don't think they're particularly PRONE to leak problems.
Ditto! Once the problem is repaired you'll probably never use the valve again.

RE: Protect-a-Tow

I wonder where some people drive their MH to have windshield chips on the dinghy. Have towed a dinghy since 2001 without any protection and without any dings/damage to either vehicle. Family member has towed a number of dinghies for about 35yrs without any protection and without any dings or damage to any of the dinghies. All of the MH's did have a solid flap hanging from the rear which may have protected the dinghies. You obviously don't drive the roads I do!
Another happy user here. Be aware that if your exhaust exits to the rear it can be a conflict.

RE: Grey/Black Tank Full Through Winter

Antifreeze probably won't mix with the contents on it's own. If it were mine, I'd find a way to dump it. You may find a mobile home park that will let you dump for a fee.
Think about the worst case results if you make the wrong decision.

RE: Truck Setting on Garmin GPS - What does it do?

The truck setting will keep you on the truck routes, where the bus setting will take you thru the towns and past all the bus stops, usually not the quickest. Bus or truck settings will avoid "U" turns when you get off route.

RE: I think my Class A is cursed!

Most (if not all) of the items listed would be common to any type of RV, whether a trailer and tow vehicle or MH. I'm guessing that some of the items you replaced were discretionary. I find that after any long trip, I'll have a few things to fix, but I just kind of expect it, and usually it's no big deal.

RE: help with electrical

i going to take the mh out this weekend and let you know what i find.. what would be the best way to check that the batts are being charged while pluged into a shoreline???Measure the voltage at the battery, if it's being charged the voltage will be around 13.5 or more. If it isn't charging the voltage will around 12.5 or less.

RE: Plugging into 50 amp

This question comes up quite often. all who respond think they know what they're talking about, and some actually do. The bottom line is it won't hurt anything, and it could help. As stated above, the 30 amp outlet receives much more use/abuse and is lighter duty. Your load is limited by the 30 amp breaker in your RV, so the only thing the 50 amp breaker is protecting is 30' of #10 wire against a short. #10 wire can handle 55 amps for a short time and a shorted cable would trip the 50 amp breaker in a fraction of a second.

RE: help with electrical

Pete,
Don't confuse the functions of the inverter and the converter. In your case, they could be in the same box, but the inverter takes power from the battery and makes 120 volt AC. The converter takes 120 volt AC from shore power or generator, changes it to 12 volt DC and charges the battery and supplies power for the lights. The lights, fans, controls for the fridge, slide motors, etc. are 12 volt DC. The outlets, TV, AC's, microwave, coffee maker, etc are 120 Volt AC. They are two different systems.
Your battery is charged either from the converter or the alternator when the engine is running. The converter receives it's power from shore power or the generator. And since it works from the generator, the problem has to be on the shore power side of the transfer switch. The reason I mentioned trying another 50 amp outlet is that if one prong of the plug wasn't making contact, some things could work while others wouldn't.

RE: help with electrical

The batteries are in the circuit all the time. when you plug in and the converter charges the batteries, it's just in the circuit also. When you unplug from shore power, the lights may get slightly dimmer because the voltage drops say 13.5 volts to 12.5. 13.5 being the charging voltage. The fact that the lights went out when you stopped the gen. either means the batteries were dead, or you have an open circuit.

RE: Torn Awning

I had the bead cut off and re-sewn, it worked for awhile, but tore again. it seems that when it gets old enough to tear, you may as well save a step and go ahead and replace it.

RE: help with electrical

It sounds like a problem with the transfer switch?? The converter is working since the batteries charged from the generator. They should have also charged from the alternator when you were driving.
You might try plugging into a different 50 amp outlet.

RE: House Battery problems

With a 12.4 volt reading at the battery, my guess is that the battery isn't the problem. Turn on all of the lights and check the voltage again at the battery. The voltage will drop well below 12 volts if the battery is the problem. Otherwise, I'd look for a bad connection.
