RE: San Felipe, Baja!!!!!!!

We have spent the last 10 winters in San Felipe. For us, October and November are 'just right'. Toward the end of December to first of March 'a little cool', but much better than Arkansas. :) We looked for you last winter??

upgrade window shades

We are looking to upgrade to pull down shades and get rid of the pleated shades with the strings. I found only one company, MCD in McKinney, texas. Are there other companies offering these?

RE: End of the road!

Good luck in whatever you do. We have been wintering in Mexico for the last 10 years. Sometimes I think we may have a few more years. When the time comes to sit on the porch, that is what we will do.

trip report, San Felipe to Sonoyta

We left San Felipe early last Wednesday. The young man at the military checkpoint was curious as to the cost of the motorhome, etc. He did a 5 minute inspection and AFTER he was done I gave him a futbol magazine and thanked him. Road is the best it has ever been up to the toll road east ( highway 2 ) As we went through San Luis I watched how far the line was backed up and estimated it would have been about a 2 hour wait. This was around 10 am. The most of highway 2 going to Sonoyta is finished and in good shape. There are still a few short detours where construction is continuing. We stopped a few yards before the border and I walked over and got our fmms cancelled and passports stamped as exiting. Pulled up to the gate and waited maybe 5 minutes for the 2 cars ahead of us. Went to secondary and the agent came in and with a polite conversation, took less than another 5 minutes and we were done. All this took a little more than the 2 hours I would have waited if crossing at San Luis and I am 125 miles farther east on my way home. Another thing is, there is no place to stop at San Luis to cancel the fmm.

RE: Tolls!! Are we autobus or truck

You oughta see the look on their faces when we pull up towing doubles with a total of 6 axles. It's so funny it's worth the extra money!

RE: Highway 2 San Luis to Sonoyta

I guess nobody knows if construction is finished. I will report after we go through there in April.

RE: Highway 2 San Luis to Sonoyta

Hi Russ, I've run that road several times. I can handle the traffic ( I'm an old trucker ). Last spring there were several places with detours into the dirt. If that is done I can be in Lukeville in the same time I would be waiting in line at San Luis.

Highway 2 San Luis to Sonoyta

Last spring when we went home there were many construction detours. Does anyone know if the construction is finished?

RE: Cell phone in Baja

We have AT&T 'viva mexico' plan and it works well here. Last year we went as far south as mulege and any time we had telcel signal it worked. I don't know if it would be worthwhile on a short term basis.

RE: When a breakdown occurs make lemonade.

Just last October we were on our way from Arkansas to San Felipe, Baja Ca. Mexico when we were snowed in at Douglas Wyoming. We found the KOA which is open all winter, hunkered down and spent 2 days. While there we unhooked the car swept the snow off and wandered around town. We had a good breakfast, visited some antique stores, bought some books and found the nicest museum where we spent the whole afternoon.Next morning I swept the snow off the slide awnings and we carefully went on up the road. Now, you're saying, "why were you in Douglas Wy. going to Mexico from Ar?" Well, because we wanted to visit some folks in Emmett,Id. and others in Hood River, Or. Whom we had met in San Felipe in previous years. Then you say, "Why didn't you have sense enough to start this trip earlier?" Well, I wanted to leave home the middle of September, but a granddaughter decided to get married on October 20 and we had to stay home for that. We left on October 21 and sure enough we got it all done and here we are in San Felipe enjoying the beautiful sunshine and catching fish.Life is good.

RE: Did anyone?

I did sit in my front yard which is 40 feet from the beach, in shorts & t shirt, and enjoy a glass of wine as the clouds over the Sea of Cortez turned pink from the sunset behind me. It don't get any better than this. :D

RE: Have you ever been stopped by the POLICE ?

If y'all are done fighting now, I got stopped in Az. for double towing, was given a warning and had to unhook the trailer & have Donna drive the car while I towed just the trailer. Since then I have read the az code and it says: 2nd vehicle must have a fifth wheel!!! It didn't say BE a fifth wheel, it says HAVE a fifth wheel. I printed that and we will discuss it if I get stopped again. Maybe whoever wrote that doesn't know what a fifth wheel is. I can't imagine my '04 Tracker having a fifth wheel. :R

RE: Another Fun one, What kind of Rig?

35' motorhome, Chevy Tracker, 2 axle trailer with dunebuggy. The whole thing is 'only' 68' long. The nice Arizona Trooper didn't like the setup. The young lady at the toll booth west of San Luis didn't know how much to charge me as I have 6 axles on the ground.

RE: GAS ENG AND YOU TOW WHAT WITH YOUR MH

See signature. Arkansas to Baja for 9 years. No problems except Arizona doesn't like this combination. I have been a commercial truck driver since 1962. Maybe that helps. Total weight 5000 lbs. Average mpg about 7 now with a 362 hp V10.

RE: OK, Im an idiot...

A friend told me if you set the parking brake REALLY TIGHT you can wear the tires down to the wheels, but not wear out the brakes.Don't know how he knew that.
