RE: Weight vs frontal area

10mpg is about normal, unless you have a diesel. many people don't realize how much the frontal area has on gas mileage. they worry more about carrying 100lbs. of water, since they focus on the weight, when it really won't factor in gas mileage as much as the barn door they're towing thru the air. and pulling a 5000lbs. TT with a v-6, is just asking for trouble. unless it's an Ecoboost v-6. i tow a 5000lbs. loaded HTT with a v-8 and there's no way i'd tow it with a v-6.

RE: Ideal Inverter Generator

Is this inverter generator potentially the cat's meow (in terms of price vs. performance)? Or . . . i've been saying that the Champion 3100w will be a game changer for the RV world. great customer support, proven reliability and performance, great price and great package. knowing how well Champion's other products have worked out, then there's no reason to think that this one won't be up to the same standard. this one will hopefully impact H&Y in terms of sales. then maybe they will start looking at what they're pricing their products at.

RE: Equalizer hitch size, how big is too big?

The dealer is recommending an Equalizer brand as that's what he carries. Why not shop around and find the hitch you want, not the one the dealer sells? There are better hitches than the Equalizer. i'm very happy with my Equal-i-zer and it's a third of the cost of a Hensley or ProPride. why not post what you think are better WDH's.:@

RE: Best Route to Sequoia Park in California

depends on what you're driving. if it's a car/truck/class b, then 198 out of three rivers. if it a larger MH or you're towing something, DON'T go that way. you'll need to enter from the north on 198.

RE: Shopping Jayco Jayfeather Hybrid -Thoughts?

So if one lives in CA where the prices are higher.... what does one do? Sigh. you basically decide whether you're willing to pay that much for a used hybrid. i think you're kinda forced into it, since good used ones are rare and you want a used one. when we were shopping, we decided that we would not and bought a new one from a Midwest dealer. we felt that it was better to buy a new one with a warranty, for the same price as a 5 year-old smaller hybrid sold for, out here in California.

RE: Am I crazy to consider a 1999?

Do you not see many older hybrids for sale because people hang on to them or because they are all at the scrap yard? it's more because hybrid TT's are an extremely small portion of the RV market. they are probably about as common as teardrop trailers, because they appeal to a much smaller group of buyers. hybrids are extremely rare out here in California. in the 6 years we've had our hybrid, i've seen less than 50 hybrids total, on the road or in the campgrounds.

RE: Battery charging with Champion 20001 question

The knob has a gas, a 12v and an elec selection. The water heater is propane too. The fridge is old and takes for ever to get cold, so I'm thinking that might be the cuplrit. that's got to be a small fridge. i'd love to see pics of it, since i've never read of a 3-way fridge in hybrids. 1999 was the first year that Starcraft made hybrids, so maybe they put a 3-way in the first model year.

RE: Battery charging with Champion 20001 question

Thinking maybe the fridge. Even though the knob says off and it still overloads. I turned the fridge on elec (it's a 3 way), it doesn't get cold. For now I guess we live without a plug and fridge off propane. hybrids don't have 3-way fridges, they are propane or 110v AC. they don't make 3-way fridges that big for RV's. the only thing 12v DC for the fridge, is the light, circuit board and the ignitor when on propane. remember, a fridge on electric takes much longer to cool down, compared to being on propane.

RE: Am I crazy to consider a 1999?

It seems like from what I read, finding a used hybrid that has no water issues is tough. this is more true with the early hybrids, when they were still working out the kinks on keeping the bunk ends leak-free. remember, this was a completely new type of RV, in 1998, when R-Vision made the very first one. it was 1999 when other companies, like Forest River/Jayco/Thor started making their own hybrids. it took a number of years before they evolved into a much better system, such as cable supported and better seal/frame designs.

RE: Am I crazy to consider a 1999?

remember, 1999 was the first year that Rockwood made hybrids. those first few years had a lot of growing pains, especially on the tent ends/bunk end seals. personally, unless it was garaged or the owners were extremely good at maintenance, i doubt that a 15 year-old hybrid will be without some big issues somewhere. but it's definitely worth a look, IF the price is right.

RE: Cleaning Tent ends.

your owner's manual should have a printout from the canvas manufacturer, with care and maintenance instructions. it would help knowing what you're trying to clean: mold, mildew, stains? by the way, cleaning will not "un-waterproof" the canvas.

RE: Rockwood Roo 17 Floor Project

i'm interested in seeing what it looks like under the plywood. please post pics of the floor structure under the plywood. i may have to do some repairs around the bathroom door floor area.

RE: Costco! champion 3100w genny

Professor95, author of the 900+ page 3000w genset thread, picked up one of the Champion 3100i. He gives a quick review here (bottom of page) I think I'll call CPE and see if a 3100i can be set up for high altitude. i hope the Prof starts a new thread on it. i've been saying that this gen will be a game changer, if they can keep the price in the $500-$700 range. i'm thinking about selling my Honda 2000w and buying this one with the money.

RE: Generator Box

there are tons of posts on this, in the huge 3000w Chinese Generator thread, that's nearly 500 pages long.

RE: Shopping Jayco Jayfeather Hybrid -Thoughts?

well, high NADA is $6940 but you are in California and good used hybrids are rare and fetch much higher prices than other parts of the country. since a new hybrid sells for nearly MSRP prices, out here, it's only logical that a used one would sell for much higher than NADA values. seeing that a new 19H would sell for under $15k in other parts of the country, spending 65% of that, for a 8 year-old hybrid, is up to you. asking whether it's a good price, is not easy considering how different prices are around the country.

RE: 12 volt coffee makers is the any good reason to own one?

Coleman Stovetop Coffeemaker. X2 I never heard of one of THESE THINGS I think it is the best solution for my needs. they've been around for at least 20 years.

RE: A month in the great northwest. What would you do?

Sept. will be a great time to go. that's when we camp, to miss all the crowds and the weather is still great out West. i agree about going one way there and return the other way. i suggest doing the northern route to Seattle, first. then return back the coastal route south.

RE: Which hitch? Sway control? Brake controller?

a quick search here, will show that the most recommended WDH's are the Equal-i-zer and the Reese Dual-Cam. both have built-in sway control and with a SUV, you're going to need a better sway control with a 27'+ TT. a search will also show that any of the tow Prodigys, P2 or P3, are the most recommended and the best for the price. these are probably recommended in about every 5 threads in this forum.

RE: Hybrid camping in Yellowstone....which is your fav CG?

I know this is better suited for the National Parks forum, but since I have been on this forum and have become familiar with you all, I thought I would start here. Us Chicago folk are heading west, Mt. Rushmore, Badlands, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons and anyplace else in between. This will be our first trip west and our second trip with our camper. I checked the rvreview site and found 11 campgrounds located in Yellowstone. Do you have a preference? I know reservations are tough but we are flexible during the month of July. I am going to try Colter Bay or Lizard creek for the tetons, but not sure about Yellowstone. I noticed many people said they used a generator. Do you recommend one? Again, we're rookies! :) first, Fishing Bridge bans soft-sided campers but they are fine in all the other YNP campgrounds. but you can "turtle" in your hybrid and that will let you stay at Fishing Bridge. July is the highest attendance month of the year, so be prepared to be frustrated in finding a campsite, since you don't have reservations. personally, i wouldn't go in July without a reservation. you might be able to get a site outside the park. we like Madison for the west side of the loop and Canyon for the other side. Bridge Bay would be fine for the east side. since i recommend staying at least 7 days, a generator is going to be necessary, unless you have solar. having a two batteries setup is a good idea, unless you have the generator. since it always gets cool/cold overnite, you're going to need the furnace and that will suck a battery dry in a nite or two.
