RE: Heading north from La Paz, BCS to Tecate Border Crossing

If you have some time, stop at Rancho Sordo Mudo RV Park between Ensenada and Tecate (page 448 of Churches, "Mexican Camping") Visit the school, the children and the wonderful staff. If you have any school supplies for them, they will be greatly appreciated. Lot of wineries and great restaurants in the area.

RE: What about Rving in Chile?

We traveled some in Peru, Argentina, Chile and a little in Brazil and Uruguay including a two week cruise from BA to Valparaiso. Saw several RVs and a a few RV parks. Saw a lot of ads for RVs for sale or rent. Took a bus from Puerto Iguazu to BA. For the most part the highways were good. The Lakes District of Chile (Puerto Montt)was beautiful and made for RVing. However, the drivers in Lima are absolutely mad. Taxi rides were like you had gotten into a NASCAR race, but with both left and right hand turns. BA was just a massive traffic jam.

RE: Dental work, Mexico

Had my teeth checked and cleaned in Algadones in Jan. The dentist recommended that I have five teeth with old large metal fillings replaced with crowns for a total of $750. I didn't have the time to get them done then. Two days ago I broke one of those teeth and today in Odgen UT I paid the dentist $866.00 for one crown! The dentist gave me a discount for paying cash. Over the years I and my wife have had a lot of dental work done in Mexico and all of it has been good and inexpensive.

RE: Train from El Fuerte to Creel

We found a gentleman just across from the train station who let us leave our truck there behind a locked gate, for a small fee, of course. Think there was a little store next to it.

RE: Best route in Mexico - Tecate to East Mexicali Crossing

Last time I drove Mex 2 from Tecate (2006) and it was fine except they closed the road for about four hours due to a snowstorm. Everyone had fun making snow angels and having snowball fights while waiting for the snow to melt. Probably the first time most of the Mexican kids had seen snow.

RE: Mexico Russ Revives Tourism in Sonora

Nice meeting you, Russ, and Naomi and Javier, too. Hope your wife is feeling better. Had a hard time comprehending how much PP has changed since we were there last. Marveled at the brochures.

RE: Quartzsite and Sonora

We'll be in Q this coming week, so will stop by and meet you. Two years ago at Q, I taked with two different reps for Sonora and even gave them some copies of Churches' book, but they basically still didn't understanding RVing in Sonora or Mexico. Nice to have a "player" there.

RE: Driving and RVing Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and back

We left our 5W in Mexico and jsut took our truck into Belize for a week (wasn't sure if we could get insurance on the 5W in Belise and didn't want to go through their customs for just a week). We exited and entered Mexico at the same Chetumal. It is hard to remember exactly, but we made arrangements as we exited and I think paid a small fee and getting back in was very easy with no extra fees. We were treated very well with a personal escort through the offices and everything was on their computer which was back in the early 2000s. Know I got my original information from the Church's book, Traveler's guide to Mexican Camping. You'll be amazed at the number of Chinese restaurants in Belize.

RE: Upscale RV Parks In Mexico

Quartzsite AZ is interesting place with a lot to do in Jan and Feb. google it. You can boondock for a couple of weeks free in designated areas to getting a reasonably priced seasonal fee plus the full range of RV parks. If you can't make it to Mexico, stop by "Q". Everyone should see it in full swing at least once.

RE: HOW FULL ARE RV PARKS

Happy to see that San Ramon has sort of added some more spaces. Last time we were there, I designed a CG addition for about two dozen sites for the manager at the time, plus a CG for him at another location. Can't imagine what the power must be like since it was absolutely terrible while we were there. We did enjoy having the pool every so often. Last time in the Monterrey area we did see some used RVs for sale. Seems like it is a start which is great for a country with no past recreational RVing history.

RE: HOW FULL ARE RV PARKS

RV sales have been up for the last three years. The final figure for this year will be at least 12% and the majority of the buyers are younger families. The RV industry is happy. The number of US RVs going SOB has constantly decreased since 9/11. Just trying to get back into the US can be very trying. People just don't want to spend the time and/or money to get a passport. I wish the RV industry would try to develop/sell RVs for the Mexican market which would help SOB year round and increase the demand in more areas.

RE: Upscale RV Parks In Mexico

Think the basic problem is electrical power. Some of us are fulltime RVers and it is nice to continue something like the normal NOB living. Don't get me wrong, we always enjoy watching the voltage meter go for 138 v. to 92v and then back again. More fun to rush and turn everything off in hopes of a 60 sec warm up of something the microwave. Most fun is when a caravan hits your park and the ancient fuses are blown with no replacements available. The Mexican RV parks need to do what they do NOB. Take your little CG, put the word "Resort" in the name, double the price and change nothing else =). Slowly CGs are realizing that rvs are getting larger, have multiple S/Os, and larger power demands and are making changes to accomodate them. We have hoped for years that the expanding mexican middle class would take up RVing to help their CGs survive and expand. And, yes, we have been able to visit every state in Mexico and enjoy the sights, sound, food, history and most of all, the people.

RE: where to cross in California?

Another vote for Tecate, and if you do, please stop for a day or so at Rancho Sordo Mundo--a school for the deaf. The campground is OK, but the staff and children will probably invite you for lunch or dinner. Do go! We always bring some school supplies for them and our last visit was at Thanksgiving time. We brought some gently used toys from Goodwill. Many of the children stay there for the whole school year. there are lots of good restaurants and fine wineries nearby. Most of the staff are missionaries or church outreach folks. Some of the staff are former students.

Coupon Expiration Dates

We have been fulltiming since 8/93 and over the years have spent a ton of money at CW including the purchase of our last 5W. We get our snail mail about once a month. By the time we get the Highway mag., the CW coupons have expired by several days or weeks. It probably saves us money in the long run, but it doesn't seem to be good business to turn your back on folks who don't get their mail everyday or need to commute to a distant CW.

RE: Bring Dog into Rocky point

We've had our dogs everywhere in Mexico including Rocky Point with no real problems. But our are nearly always on a leash and the only problems in CG have been others unleashed dogs. We pick up our dog's droppings although it puzzles the locals. Be a good dog neighbor wherever you go. Sometimes getting Vet help can be more difficult.

RE: Another Fun one, What kind of Rig?

2006 2500 Chev Duramax single rear tires so we can drive around certain cities where "trucks" aren't allowed and it pulls a 39' FW. Have to consider carefully where we go.

RE: Safety news for Hwy 2?

Hwt 2 isn't as "isolated" as you may think as it connects the mainland with Baja.
