RE: Branson MO for Christmas

Branson seems to celebrate Christmas at Thanksgiving. Have been there at that time, and it was a nice time to visit. Lots of lights, good shows, temps were reasonable.

RE: My computer screen "hiccups"

The laptop is an older Dell with XP and the hiccuping only occurs when I am in Windows Live Hotmail. The screen kind of jumps and then all is normal for a minute or two when it does it again. I rebooted & cleared the cache, what else can I try? Chris, Have you tried to hook up a regular monitor to the laptop? I think that when you do, you will find that the monitor won't flicker like the laptop monitor does. I had the same problem, and found that it was a connection within the laptop. That laptop was a Sony Vaio that was 3 years old, and I ended up getting another laptop. My daughter's laptop (Toshiba) was even worse than the Vaio was. I have a LCD monitor that I use with my laptop all the time in the RV, and I only use the laptop monitor when I take into a library or hot spot. I also use a wireless keyboard and mouse....I forget that I am using a laptop most of the time while in the RV. Good luck. --Dave

RE: PW on Vista - whats the safest way?

I agree with "weasel4", you should have a user name with password, and an administrator name with password. One nice thing about Vista is that when it needs the administrator permissions, it will ask you if you want to proceed, and then bring up a small window where you put in the administrator password. This is REAL important since some of the Internet Viruses want to install a program on your computer. If you are logged on as an admin, it will just say "do you want to do this?", and many times you get caught off guard and say "yes" without realizing that the "doing this" is "loading a new program onto your computer". But when you have to put in that password too, you think about it more and are more likely to say "cancel".

RE: Email client for windows 7

Number one you can't do a thing without an internet conection, I need to be able to look at my mail even without a connection. Number 2 is unless you pay for something it won't handle multible email accounts. You must have an internet connection at some point. Gmail will do multible accounts free of charge. Actually, a person can have a connection, download all the emails in their account, then disconnect (like drive down the road losing your connection.) Later, perhaps when they stop for lunch at a rest area, they can bring up their email, answer and put answer into the "outgoing" folder. Next time they get a connection, the outgoing messages will go out, and any new messages will come in, then you disconnect and drive down the road again.

RE: Audio Books on Tape

MY wife is an avid user of Books on Tape that she gets from our local library. She is wondering what will be available for her when we start semi full-timing. I have found a few websites that offer audio book downloads. She thought the Cracker Barrel had a Book program. How do you handle audio book situations? If go to this Link - Sarasota Public Library it is for download audio books offered for free from the same Public Library she currently gets her Audiobooks from. She should be able to download these from any place she has a fast Internet connection, and the good thing is, the automatically "check themselves back in", so you never have an overdue fee! Now all you need to do is get her an i-pod, although there are ways to listen to it from your computer, but an i-pod is so much more convenient. ps: As you get closer to FT status, change your address with the Library to a close friends house, so if they send out any notices, it won't be returned to the Library. Not sure how often that Library requires one to renew their card, it may be able to be renewed via the phone or the Internet.

RE: What do you do with all your money??

I think you can get a Discover Card while being a Canadian Resident. Discover Card is accepted in many more places in the lower 48 than up in our good neighbor's neck of the woods. If I buy something at Walmart with Discover, it gives me the option to get "cash back" if I want. I have done this before, and since I pay off my Discover Card each month, there was "no charge" for doing this. I put as much as I can on my Discover to maximize my cash back (although no cash back bonus on getting cash at Walmart with my purchase, but I do get it on the actual purchase.) I have a Mastercard as a back-up for those few places which don't take Discover.

RE: MH Salvage yard

Call up the largest auto salvage place near you, and ask them where junker RV's are taken to in your particular area. My guess, they will know the best one or two places, and have probably done business with them before.

RE: Email client for windows 7

When I use live mail, I have mine set to 1 minute. Annoying yes, but better than the default.....of course, if you need a quicker check, just do a Ctrl-M, and it will look for new mail (and send any outgoing, un-sent mail) immediately.

RE: Cannot bring up Yahoo Mail

I hope one of these solutions might help, although they both dealt with Hot Mail. On this thread I suggested that the person might clean out the cache/history/junk out of their browser. It worked for them. On this thread the person upgraded their Java, and it cleared up their problem. You might want to give them both a try to see if it clears up your yahoo problem. I have not had any problems with Yahoo, been into my Yahoo mail every day for the past month or more. Good luck. And if you get a fix, let us all know what it was. Dave

RE: Another Service Nightmare: Long essay

Maybe this will help it feel a little better.... $650 + $250 = $900, not $800, so you only paid $550 "IF" you ever get the $250 check out of them....

RE: 2 1/2 hours PC shopping.......

I want to put my 2 cents worth on the $300 laptops. I have two children in college. I purchased, through Amazon, a $300 Acer Netbook for each of them. These netbooks have Windows XP, very small screen, 1 gig memory. I also loaded OpenOffice for word processing. It has been 4 months now, and this what they say.... "Love it, the best thing you could have got me..." "Wow, I can't believe how long I can run it on batteries" "It is so light." "I put it in my backpack with my books, and it is holding up well" Note: When they arrived, I was surprised at how sturdy they were. When closed up, it is very tight and solid. The outer case is not soft. So IMHO, there are $300 laptops out there which are worth the money for specific users. Now would I like the small screen? Not if I was using it all the time...but if that were the case, I would hook it up to a monitor, add a wireless keyboard and mouse, just like I have with my $2,000 laptop which has a nice monitor, and a keyboard with a bit more room. And you know, when I pushed the "on" button simultaneous on both a netbook with Windows XP and my Windows Vista Ultimate which has 2 gigs memory, the netbook came up way faster than the Vista.

RE: No access to Hotmail

You did not say if you are using IE (Internet Explorer), Firefox, or what for your browser. My guess is that you are using IE (the blue "e"). I would clear out my history. From IE, Tools | Internet Options | General tab | Clear temporary files | Clear History. If from Firefox, Tools | Clear Private Data | Browing History & Cache must be checked, but I would check them all | Clear Private Data Now My guess is that you have corrupt cache, so while you are accessing Hot Mail, your browser is bringing up a corrupt copy from a past visit...and being corrupt, it won't work. Corrupt cache just happens from time to time, more with IE than others in my opinion. This person had same problem Link

RE: Thought on a possible mod

Try looking at this Google Products Search . These light weight metal ones might do the trick, but you would have to find a way to attach them to the wall. Also, you need to measure and re-measure to be sure they would fit. (Results from Google Search include stores such as Walmart, Target, etc.) each for a little over $200. I took out a Jack-knife couch and put in a small computer table, and all is fine. However, there was an outside access door which I covered up with the decorative bottom from the couch. Since this was in the slide out, I also reinforced the floor with angle brackets going into the sub-floor and into studs in the wall, since a person's weight would be centered more in one area instead of distributed throughout the couch.

RE: Can't get to my hotmail account

I would be sure that your browsing history is clear (with IE open, Ctrl Sht Del at same time) If that does not work, I would try downloading the last Microsoft Malicious Software Remover and run it. You also might want to load Firefox or Opera, both free browsers, and see if you get the same results with them. If not, then you might want to remove IE and if you feel so inclined, load IE again.

RE: Newbies

Tim, Find someone in your area who KNOWS 5th wheels, and when you find one you like, ask them to look at it too. (Give them a gift certificate to a nice restaurant, it will be the best $100 you ever spent!) These dealers really know how to make a older 5th wheel (or Trailer, or motorhome) look "real good", even though they know there is some water damage in certain areas that they have "hidden". Once you buy a used one, it is yours. Even extended warranties will only help "fix" certain things....normally the AC unit, the Fridge, stuff like that. But if there has been a leak that they have been able to hide, it will show up, and a warranty won't cover it. As for the small space, well that is another issue, but when times are desperate, people tend to adjust their personal feelings and needs accordingly. After all, how many of us have heard the stories during the depression? Very large families living in small shacks, some traveling to the "west" working to earn the gas and food along the way....times are tough, but we are nowhere near to the tough times they faced 70 years ago.

RE: How to re-image a PC with no CD drive - SOLVED

I with the ACER netbooks there is an image on the hard drive that you cannot see, but if follow the restore directions, it will bring the netbook back to the state you bought it at.....as weasel4 was saying in their post.

RE: Arkansas recommended camping ares

John, Lived in Arkansas a few years ago. As one who golfed a lot until the ole shoulder couldn't take it anymore, I remember seeing TV ads for the Natural State Golf Trail while living there. You might want to take that map, and look for RV parks near by. I know that when I stayed in Pine Bluff that the RV park was right at the end of the Harbor Oaks Golf Course. I stayed there for a month, and it was like $300, included electric (30 amp), had no sewer but had a dump station. It is 2 miles back in what they call "Regional Park". Very quiet, and I talked to a few golfers who said the golf course was great, and I think they said they got weekly rates, or 4 day golfing rates.....something like that. In looking over the map, I know there are RV parks fairly close to many of the golf courses on their map. Good luck with your new home....loved the Hot Springs area.....good luck golfing in 90+ degree weather with 90% humidity during the summer. (Or in other words, take advantage of the Spring and Fall golfing season, and many clubs give reduced rates in Winter.) --Dave

RE: Retirement for the less fortunate

I don't work full-time, but do get short-term jobs now and then...some which I can do on the road, others in person (deals with computers). If child was out of college, I wouldn't have to work at all (but probably would still take the occassional job, especially if I can work on the road). Anyway, my RV life only cost around $1,500 per month (child takes another $500 ten months per year). I travel about 5,500 miles per year....heck, I traveled more than that living in S&B just to travel to work and back 250 days per year, but got better gas mileage! I have not kept accurate records each year, but I have seen others that do. Someone early mentioned Tioga George. The best figures that I have seen is from Howard and Linda at RV-Dreams.com. If you click HERE and then scroll down part way and see links to the right for four years of RVing, very accurate records. I am sure there are others out there too.

RE: Curious at 50+

I just want to give another thought about #7 7. Can you get things sent to you by mail, UPS or FedEx? Was at a Flying J the other day, sitting down reading the walls.... Anyway, I hear this announcement, "UPS is in the house, come and get your packages." Never thought about that one.....if you plan out your route, you can have UPS deliver to a Truck Stop and you can pick it up as you drive through. Of course, if the package is running late, which you can know by following the tracking number, you might be in the area a day longer....but for a one or two day delivery method, this could work.

RE: Vista Resolution

Is she shutting it down through the "start" button, or just turning it off? If the latter, then I would suggest getting your setting set, then doing a log-off and then log it back on and see if the setting took. If she is shutting it down correctly, then I would make sure her username is set-up as an administrator, then do the setting, log-off and then log back on. If that works, you can set her back to a "user" again instead of an admin.
