RE: Might have found that 100% American made truck

I wish I knew someone who owned one of those just so I could borrow it, drive it home and say "look honey, I just bought this!"

RE: How much HP & torque do I need ?

Performance is so subjective; some are happy to motor all day at 55mph & 35-40mph in big hills while others will clench their teeth is they slow from 75 to 74 on a climb. Most of us fall in the middle. Even in challenging conditions, I'd think any modern V8-equipped SUV or truck would make 95% of us happy with ~5000lb behind it. Are you moving on from your Trailblazer?

RE: Fiver TV - 2002 F-350 Lariat 7.3L Diesel Dually

. It's not that it won't pull it, and there is little doubt it can actually handle the weight, but legally you will be over the truck's payload At the risk of opening a big old can of worms, running over GVW isn't a legal issue. Not the wisest thing to do, but not "illegal" per se.

RE: Fiver TV - 2002 F-350 Lariat 7.3L Diesel Dually

IMO an 02 (or rare early 03) Super Duty 7.3L is one of the true "gems" of the used truck market (like the fuel-sipping 305/555 CTD or 06-early 07 pre-DPF DMax). It can also handle tuning if done right & reasonably, just be prepared, at some point in time, to rebuild & fortify the 4R100. Yeah you'll spend a few bucks but it can be made to be unbreakable.

RE: Got stuck.....

I am a 4x4 guy myself BUT I think some people skip it for reasons other than $$. Example, my father; to him, 4x4 meant a higher COG, worse handling, less sharp steering, hundreds of lbs of extra weight, more things to break and/or maintain, and a sense of overconfidence in snow. I did & still do disagree, but not all that skip 4x4 do it to save money.

RE: 2008 f250 disel milage

The 6.4L, in its short run, carved out a reputation for strong performance, hit-or-miss reliability, and (unfortunately) poor economy, particularly for a diesel.

RE: 3.21 vs 3.55

Looking at the ratios you've posted I would think the 8sp would have a pretty big advantage at getting a load moving...the 4.71-3.14-2.1 first 3 ratios seem pretty well suited to getting from 0-40mph which IMO is the real-world performance that's most important.

RE: Looking to buy my first duramax.

Older, high-mileage vehicles can be a great value as long as you've got the cash on hand if a transmission goes south or a rear end gives up the ghost, etc. If you're in that position & it's in great shape other than cosmetics I say go for it; the GM/DMax/Allison trucks have unquestionably proven themselves.

RE: 2013 FORD F-250 6.2 GAS ENG. MPG

Don't feed the troll :W LOL. True, but every now & then it's fun to poke the harmlessly myopic in the ribs and it's all in good fun...I'd like to think Allworth was grinning when he posted too

RE: 2013 FORD F-250 6.2 GAS ENG. MPG

It pulls like a gasser! Nuff said! Total B. Stuff. You obviously do not OWN a "gasser" let alone a 6.2 "gasser". Instead of posting drivel about something you don't know beans about perhaps you should move along to the oil burners forum? Let ME TELL YOU that so far I am SUPER impressed with my 2013 F250 with the 6.2 "gasser". As far as I am concerned it will not have much problems keeping up with most oil burners given the same load. As far as mileage well the new oil burners are simply not getting much better mileage than the "gassers" whether towing or empty. The new smog regs have really made the oil burners lose any real "value" (IE better mileage) and fuel is much more expensive. For the OP, I have F250 2wd super cab short bed with 3.73 axle. I have about 3K miles on it and empty is getting about 15. I have not towed any long distance as of yet but for a short 30 mile trip with my 5K empty TT only dropped the instant mileage a about .2 MPG. But let me tell you this engine rocks! Had no problem pulling a 10% grade hill which has a stop light at the bottom ( Yeah PADots "finest" engineers) topping the hill at a easy 55 and was in 6th gear to boot! I am expecting it to run about the same as my older F250s which have the 5.4 which would be 9.5-10.5. It IS a truck and hauling a RV is like pushing cement blocks down the road without any tires under them. RPM in my case for 65 MPH is about 1900, I wouldn't expect the 4.3 axle to be much more than 2200 at that speed. I would expect in your case a bit lower mileage empty but not all that much (seems to me some reports were 14 ish). I am looking forward to towing this summer with this beast! :B I think you misunderstood Allworth's comment; when he says "tows like a gasser" he means it tows as well as a diesel in 95% of situations, does so on fuel that is much easier to find and costs 60 cents less per gallon, is quieter, has a much lower initial purchase price, and requires appreciably less maintenance. Pretty sure that's what our broad-minded friend meant by that :W

RE: 1T Pickup special rules and regulations?

1) Ride/drive/performance between 3/4 & 1-ton trucks is generally going to be identical 2) Check with your insurance provider; the 1-ton may cost you more to insure (this varies state-to-state IIRC)

RE: GMs new secret weapon......LOL

In case you didn't know, buick in china is like bmw here. They really like the buicks. Guess the quality must be pretty good and they are a change from the cookie cutter cars found there. It is the case. Buick is very popular in China. It is a car with great status in China and from what I understand this Chinese view of Buick goes back many decades. One of our vehicles is a 2007 Buick sedan, bought new in 2007 and I have to say after living with it since then I've changed my mind about Buick's. I got past the old man's car stereotype after a year or so and I find it to be an excellent automobile. Very quiet, comfortable, capable, reliable and not at all a big, wallowing land barge as many (including me before I bought it :B) seem to think it is. I have found the quality to be excellent. I originally bought my Buick because I'm a little on the large size at 6'3" + and 245 lbs with bad hockey knees. I need to drive with my right leg pretty well stretched out and at the time a Buick sedan was about the only car with enough leg room and a firm, supportive seat which would comfortably accommodate me. If you told me that 10 years before I'd be driving a Buick sedan....I would of been surprised. But I'm glad I made the choice. A lot of us have a particular image (preconceived notion) about certain vehicles that can change rapidly once we drive them. A friend of mine loved to tease me about the Volvo XC90 we bought as my wife's DD; "look at you, one kid, another on the way and look what it's done to your taste in cars!" he loved to say. It was all in fun but finally I said "c'mon, we're going for a drive, you're driving." Once he got the 311hp/329ft-lb Yamaha-sourced V8 up to 110mph he changed his tune real, real quick... You know what they say we do when we assume :W

Think outside the box... Do you have a good friend with a 2500/3500 truck that would "swap" with you for a few weeks?

RE: New to me TV! YAY!! Should I name her?

I think you'll enjoy the feel of the Super Duty chassis; it is a very sturdy platform and the 5.4L, while it won't reach the summit first very often, is a very reliable and proven motor. Again, congrats! (Thanks for the info about the gears!) I have to say - this will be the biggest truck I've owned (F150 and a Dakota before this) - it's a dang sight bigger than what I drive today (a VW Golf) but five minutes and two turns into the test drive I was in love... I haven't had a truck for about 6 years and I'm soooo happy to have one again. It's amazing how quick we tend to get used to different sized vehicles; my wife drove a Scion Xa for years (tiny little thing) and the first few times she drove the F250 she was a nervous wreck but now she tosses it around like she's trying to win pole position. The way she drives her now-daily-driver XC90 V8 I'm thinking of painting a number on the side and trying to line up a few sponsors :B

RE: New to me TV! YAY!! Should I name her?

Congrats! And hey, no need to apologize for it not being a big, bad diesel dually; as you stated yourself, for your plans, it'll fit the bill nicely and that is really all that matters. Food for thought: I have a crew cab 4x4 5.4L F250 (2008) and I re-geared to 4.30 from 3.73 and the difference was pretty remarkable with no loss of MPG whatsoever (yes, hand calculated and I was surprised myself). Cost was around $1700 for both axles. Having said that, with 3.73s you're rated to tow (IIRC) around 9,200lb so if your plans don't approach that type of weight it would probably be overkill (deeper gears get you about 2,000lb more tow rating). I mainly re-geared due to the fact that living in Phoenix, almost any direction I travel (except for south) involves nasty long mountain climbs. I think you'll enjoy the feel of the Super Duty chassis; it is a very sturdy platform and the 5.4L, while it won't reach the summit first very often, is a very reliable and proven motor. Again, congrats!

Dear moderator, Please route this Mary Jane discussion to the appropriate forum. Maybe the Truck Camper section? :) Now that's funny... Can anyone spot the "double entendre" within my sig? :W Just kidding...but back in college...

RE: confusion over weight I can tow

I had that exact truck- 2002 crew 4x4 7.3L F250- and here are my thoughts which I recently posted in a similar thread: Your GVW is 8,800lb. Back then, the ONLY difference between F250s and F350s was the height of the spring block and the presence of an overload spring on the F350. F250s with the "camper pkg," which mine had, got the overload spring. F350s of that era had a 9,900lb GVW. IF you have the overload spring and/or you add airbags, I feel that, for that particular model year and truck, you can think of your GVW as 9,900lb and totally get away with it, without (IMO) compromising safety or reliability. 9,900lb GVW minus ~7400lb curb weight = ~2500lb of payload. That's the number I'd work with in shopping for your fiver. Add up what you, the family, and your gear weigh, subtract that from 2500lb, and there's your pin weight limit.
