RE: HWY 84 SOUTH FROM Pagosa Springs to state line

We agree, decent road, light traffic.

RE: It's the economy

Call Ford at 1-800-444-3311 for help finding a facility that will service your coach.

RE: Windshield replacement

We had very good luck with ours by letting it sit. The prior one did not sit and cracked. Ours has rubber as well but they still use sealant. Sitting was strongly recommended by a now retired, very experienced and extremely well respected factory service rep.

RE: CG close to Chicago

Windy City Campground and Beach in Tinley Park, I80 and S 80th worked fine for us three years ago.

RE: 1999 Holiday Rambler Vacationer 36 with slide

Yes, I think that it is. HR made, in my opinion, a very good unit back then. The fact that it has an aluminum exterior is a big plus I think. It was near the last of the breed. We had a 2000 and found it to be a very good, solid unit. Prices are soft but it is priced less than some run of the mill Fleetwoods I have seen and it is much more product than those. At this price point it is more about what you like than it is about what it is worth.

RE: Foretravel

Went through the plant a couple of weeks ago. Four people on the tour, almost out-numbered the factory workers. Very slow there, would take 6 months to get a fully custom coach through that line. Guess it depends on commitment. Sounds like the owners have (or had?) deep enough pockets to support it, just a matter of deciding if it is going to come back or when to cut and run. Seem to be doing some right things now but there has to be a lot of bleeding. They surely have a better shot than a high overhead outfit like Monaco. Only 2 Newmar MH dealers left in Texas, Dallas and Lubbock. The ride quality on the IFS was not earning many points from the sales team we spoke with.

RE: Winter departure from Canada

Unless it is really cold (-10F) and does not look like it is going to warm during the day, I would probably water up at my first overnight stop provided you can find a campground with working water. Fill up your fresh water holding tank at that point and put your hose away for the night. I would want to plug in at night and if it is under +20F I would have a couple of electric space heaters in the living area and one in the basement. I would not open slides that I did not have to until I got to Nevada. If you want to use the toilet the first day, put a gallon bottle of water in the bath and just pour it in for the flush. I would not worry about putting water down the drain for hand washing or what ever that day. I-25 can be very bad in a storm so it is not necessarily a good route. Go on a nice sunny day, just chill at home if the forecast is not good. You are looking at no more than 3 days to Nevada, so that should not be hard to work between weather systems. I am sure that they improved it but on one trip out, a few years ago, the very worst road surface from Anchorage to Denver was I-25 from the Wyoming line south.

RE: Towing With Dinghy Engine Running

I can tell you that with the big Cat purring it is possible to not notice that the very quiet Honda is still running. Of course it is always some how the wife's fault. Have started including the tach in my toad checks.

RE: Alaska Jobs

Have not but have talked with some who have. Guess it depends on the school, some have problems and some do not. I heard that they pulled people off one year due to some violence. I would be more inclined to try the Kenai school district or Mat-Su Borough school district. Anchorage is usually a nice town but there are some bad elements that seem to continue to cause trouble there, particularly at the schools it seems. Good luck, you will love Alaska, including Anchorage.

RE: Blowing fuse

I would take the wires loose from the thumb wheel, tape the ends and drive the coach a while. If the fuse does not blow again, you will know that the trouble is in the thumb wheel or some where in the IP lights or wiring. If it blows with this disconnected then you know that there is something else connected to the circuit or the wire is shorting between the thumb wheel and the fuse. Knowing all that will not answer your question but will at least have you thinking in the right direction. Has the coach always had this problem? If not, try to isolate when it started. Perhaps something was serviced between not having it and having it?

RE: Crystal Fusion

Did not think that the several hundred dollars that they wanted for it justified the experiment.

RE: Running toad engine while MH engine runs

Could have happened. Depends on how it is wired. Check it with a test light or meter at the plug on the back of the MH. Test light is better for testing turn signals than a digital meter. Buy one cheap at Radio Shack. Woops, I scrolled up to the wrong message to check your MH model. The info below is for a Ford V-10. I am sure that what ever you drive will be simular but I do not know where to tell you to look for it. Your MH has a fuse for the trailer turn signals. I think it is in the fuse box above the engine if my very stretched memory serves me correctly. It seems like it was a little easier to blow than I thought it should be. Your MH binkers may work fine, this fuse is just for the turn lights on the trailer plug.

RE: Allison 4000MH Failure after fluid change

It is a two inch pan and should take about 31 qt. There was suppose to be 28 qt when we first started testing it, then increased to 30 qt. total. We are back down a quart or so now because we opened up the main filter. The idea was to be a little low to start, then adjust it to match the electronic measure. We wish it were foaming, which would indicate circulation. It is not. Allison assured us that over filling would cause a mess on the ground, first off. We wish this would happen. Took the main filter off and it is the correct part number. They come in a box of 2 so there is no reason to think that the lube will be any different. Did not experiment with the filter base/cover but assume it can only go in with one orientation. Also wonder it the covers are the same for both the lube and the main. Will be back under it today and pull the lube filter and perhaps the main again to check for that. The Allison distributor said that if anything broke, like the pump or clutch we should have heard a very loud noise. We did not hear anything.

RE: Fleetwood Discovery Breaker or Ground Fault Issue

I think you are on the right track. Until you get incoming power to the GFI there is nothing gained by replacing it. Only the black wire should be hot to ground. Check the white wire for voltage to ground first, should be zero, if so then check it with ohms to ground, should be near zero. Just for fun, I would start the generator and see what happens. I realize there is no logic to that but what the heck. I would call Fleetwood and see if there is a splice somewhere. It should be in a box, perhaps a receptical. It is quite possible that there are outlets on the circuit before the GFI and this circuit simply passes through those outlets, lights or switches. You could check every outlet and light while powering first one side then the other of the 50 amp circuit. That might tell you where to look assuming that one GFI is on one side and one on the other. Do you have a wiring diagram? Perhaps Fleetwood does. The probability for it being in a connection is about 95%, in the middle of the wire 5%.

RE: Allison 4000MH Failure after fluid change

I do agree that pulling the filters and checking them out is a good idea. That is on my list, somewhere after the easier stuff. I wondered if he left the plastic wrap on them but Allison says the filters are not wrapped. The tech says it used the short filters and Allison says it would not be possible to put the long filters in if that is the case. The Allison rep said he is not aware of any problems with filter quality.

RE: Allison 4000MH Failure after fluid change

No, the transmission responded perfectly before the fluid change. The change was due to the elapsed time between the last change in accordance with the Allison schedule. The tech came highly recommended and has been doing this for several years that we know of. His business is just fluid changes, primarily RV, and his company has three locations in Texas. He has a truck that is fully set up for this work. The tech does not know what to do, he says he has done hundreds of these and never had a problem. His solution is to have it towed to the distributor 100 miles and some bad road away. It seems foolish to do that before working through all possible options. He is willing to cover the costs if it is something that he did causing the problem. There is always the possibility that it was just bad timing but that seems very unlikely. We are in full communication with the tech, just want to satisfy ourselves that all options have been covered before having it towed and turning it over to another shop. It always seems that having someone else work on our coach causes more trouble that it cures. Putting a strap on the coach is not so easy. The front cap is quite low and has nothing to connect to on the cap. We might be able to pull it if we can get the tow point on the pulling vehicle low enough. We have not tried that yet. It has to go down a rather abrupt grade and onto a very crowned narrow roadway that is also on a grade and on a curve as well. We will have to get some traffic control if we are going to take it onto the road that slowly. It will have to be towed with the strap for a quarter mile down the highway before there is a spot where it can be properly connected. The coach often drags lightly when it is driven on this route so any increase in front end height will be destructive. The tech has bulk tanks and pumped the fluid in. The quantity is measured by a meter on the hose. He says he put in 28 quarts. The dip stick shows over full on the warm marks, engine running or not. It is far above the cold full mark. We cannot get the temperature up, thus cannot check it electronically. We added additional fluid when the problem developed to insure that it was indeed full. Once we get it working, we will adjust it up or down as needed. Since the fluid does not seem to be circulating, we assume that once it does the indicated level will go down as the cooling plumbing is refilled.

RE: Extended Protection and Insurance Policies

Check the internet for sources other than dealers. We bought ours for way less than half what the dealer wanted. They are all a pain to work with but we cannot say that we are too displeased with ours. We are $ ahead.

RE: Fleetwood Discovery Breaker or Ground Fault Issue

You said you checked continuity of the breakers but did you check voltage on both sides? It is not clear to me how you checked it (ohms or voltage), thus the question. One possibility is that you are only getting one leg of power where you are plugged in. Usually, one leg works about half the coach and the other works the other half. Not knowing where or how you are powered, it could be a park problem, not your coach at all.

RE: Allison 4000 MH Transmission Problem

The diagnostic codes are 25-11 and 55-17. See the Tech Issues forum for more details. Too darn cold here for sure but we are talking about Kerrville, Tx; near San Antonio. Suppose to be 28 tonight after a high of about 70 yesterday. Don't think OAT is the problem. Fluid temp showed to be in the mid 60's after it was refilled. Really no way to move it short of a tow truck and that would probably result in damage due to the terrain between where it is parked and the highway. Just back from a snowy airplane trip to Las Vegas, so suspect you Stocktonites understand that it is getting too cold as well. A little global warming would be refreshing this season!

Allison 4000 MH Transmission Problem

We had the fluid and filter changed on our Allison transmission and it immediately quit working. It seemed fine before but it has not engaged since the fluid change. We posted the detail in the Tech Issues section and would really appreciate any one that has knowledge or experience checking there and letting us hear your thoughts. We are in a terrible place for a tow and would really like to work it out in place if possible.
