RE: Engine Block Heater/Grill Cover Needed?

Block heater when the temperature is below 35°F. That high...Really? On a modern diesel? Not calling you out on this, just trying to learn. I have never used our block heater...at any temp above 0° F. and have never had any problems. 1. My '82 Sub starts like it was summertime. 2. I don't have to wait forever for the defroster to work. 3. Less wear and tear on the engine and starter. X2. I use block heater on my '91 F-250 7.3 IDI all the time even in the spring time up here. It makes a huge difference. Less battery drain, quicker cab heat and less wear and tear. I am still on original starter, original glow plugs, relay and controller. Not bad for 23 years. For what it costs I don't even think about not using it. My '03 Ram isn't driven in the winter but neither is the Ford but I find the overnight temps around freezing in the spring is not problem for the Cummins where the Ford needs the block heater. If the temps were colder than that I would use the block heater on the Ram. It is just easier on equipment in my opinion.

Why am I being attacked? WTF?...I'm trying to give you all a heads up..OK I'm loosing faith now in what could be a educational expierience... Everyone has an opinion, and sometimes they dont line up with yours. My opinion on this is you have conducted yourself well, better than I would in the same situation. I see no hint of brand bashing, just a statement of your experiance. I look forward to your description of the repair of your TC and wish you best of luck. If you share the details and pictures of your fix, we will all learn something. I agree 100%. IMHO this should NOT be happening after only 7 years but that is apparently up for discussion. Good luck in your fix.

RE: Post your MPG in Diesels.

27 US mpg is 32.4 Imperial mpg. My RAV4 barely gets 32 mpg. You must be driving 30 mph. I am not being disrespectfull but in all of my years driving diesel pickups especially Dodge diesels there was non of them that ever got over 24 Imperial mpg (20 US mpg) let alone 20 with a camper. Sorry but you are figuring something wrong.

RE: Honda 2000i Generator, how long do they last

My 2009 Honda 2000 requires many pulls to start if it has been sitting for several weeks. I have tried everything that has been suggested on here but the same results. Since the pull start isn't that physically challenging I keep pulling until it starts and then I am good to go. If it sits two days no problems, let it sit two weeks and then I can pull over a dozen times. some are like this, others obviously are not, but I still would not get rid of it as it is a perfect addition to the camper and is very reliable and quiet. RE: F150FX4 6.5 bed. What's too much?

I have a 2004 F150 4x4 with a 6'6 bed and it caries my 11' camper around with no problem Your kidding right? You must mean at least a 8' ft box not a 6'6". My one ton dually would do well to carry a 11' camper. Your asking for trouble imho. Just like the other poster mentioned above, you don't have a full floating axle, possibly P metric tires and are overweight just to name a few but please don't take this the wrong way. I can't get my head around a camper this size on our F-150 with the 6'6" box at all. Brian

RE: fuel mileage question

14 US mpg with camper and 20 US mpg with Leer Cap traveling at 58 mph. 3.73 rear gear/4spd auto. GVW is right at 11.000 lbs give or take 200 lbs but under the 11,500 GVWR.

RE: Best way to keep batteries charged during off season?

I keep mine plugged in 24/7. I am plugged in 24/7 365 a year. The only time I am unplugged is when I am towing my rig down the road. I let the converter do all the thinking. Unit is always ready to go. I can always retreat to RV in case of an emergency or some unforeseen event like a power outage. X2.

We like our windows but if I had a choice I would not have the heiki skylight. Opening the windows and closing the screens only takes seconds so as far as bugs go it is not a problem for us. We like the fact that these windows make the camper quieter inside, can be opened in a down pour and windy conditions plus we think they add to the look of the camper. This is our opinion only. Brian

Chet: You and your better half were on PEI last year and I wish my wife and I had the pleasure to meet up with you while you were here. I like your style and your no nonense approach. It is very evident that your wife and you are the type of folks that would go out of your way to help folks as evidenced by this thread. Safe travels and if we are ever down your neck of the woods we will most certainly drop by. There are others on this forum who also deserve praise for their kindness and that is why we enjoy the RV life and the people associated with this life style.

RE: gas versus diesel for TCs

With truck campers, the issue isn't engine power. Most truck that are capable of carrying the weight of the camper on their suspension, have plenty of engine power to move it's weight down the road just fine. It's not like campers weigh 10,000 lbs. Most only weigh between 2000-4000 lbs and even the really huge ones usually don't weigh more than 5-6000 lbs. Any stock gas engine in any 3/4-ton or 1-ton pickup can easily more the extra 2000-4000 lbs down the road just fine. The real issue with truck campers is the truck's GVWR, payload capacity and rear axle weight rating. Truck campers put a lot more weight on a truck's rear axle than any other kind of RV. Even really big, heavy fifth wheels usually don't put as much weight onto the truck's rear axle as just a middle weight camper. The problem with diesel engines and truck campers is that the diesel engine weighs so dam much. Typically, the diesel engine option adds about 1000 lbs to the weight of the truck. That 1000 lbs comes directly out of the truck's payload capacity, since most trucks (except late model Fords 2005-up), use the same GVWR and RGAWR for all their trucks in the same class, whether they have a lighter weight gas engine, or a heavier diesel engine. You lose payload capacity when you choose the diesel engine. That is why I say that the best engine choice for truck campers is the gas engine. Greater payload capacity and still plenty of power to get the job done. Diesels are best for pulling very heavy trailers, since payload capacity isn't as acutely important, but towing power is important, due to the greater weights involved. Excellent explanation, one of the best I have read. I have had diesels since 1983 era with the 6.9 IH in my F-250. I now have a 2003 Ram 5.9 Cummins and could not be happier however my choice was to buy prior to 2007 model diesel engines for simplicity sake, no cat, no egr, no DEF, etc. While the diesels have strong low end torque and are very drivable I would not hesitate to buy the new 6.2 Ford V8 in a new dually. Quiet, less maintenance than diesel and if you get a bit of water or dirty fuel it will not kill you on the road. Gas engines today have also come a long way since the older 460/454 era and I say keep 'em coming. No more diesels for me due to their initial high cost, upkeep. My next dually will be gas hands down. This is of course my opinion and I am not trying to step on anyone's toes. Brian
