Over night

We are looking for a one night stop between Sacramento, CA and Santee, CA. Harris Ranch is great, however, we would like to be further south before stopping for the night. Just an over night w/o any hookups would be great...

RE: Tire Pressure, does it really matter?

Yes, I understand I do not want to run over or under 80 PSI. My question is does being hooked up change anything or not? My thinking is if I run the pressure up to 80 PSI with the 5er hooked up I am still good to go. Yes or no???

Tire Pressure, does it really matter?

I normally check tire pressure on the TV before hooking up. However, this time I failed to do so. The 5er has a GVWR of 12,000 lb. I run light, however, let’s put the pin at 2,400 lb. My question is does it really matter, or do I just run the tire pressure on the TV up to specs regardless of if I am hooked up or not?

RE: Hello,I have a truck Camper but new to 5th Wheel experience.

The B&W is in two parts. Pull two pins and the plat pops of; pull one more pip and the rest lifts out leaving a flat bed. I pull mine out often w/o help in less then 15 min.

RE: Water under the shower

I feel your pain. My knuckles are still recovering from being ground into the rough underside of the fiberglass tub as I worked to repair a "small leak". The opening is just to small to see into what alone work through. That said, you have found the problem and that is a great start. Try to take your time and stay calm as you work through it.
As a PS I want to thank the many of you who mentioned looking for leaks in the first place. It was during a "routine check" that I found I had a small leak and it was reading how so many of you were able to fix yours that I found the confidence and determination to fix mine. So again Thank You!

RE: New to fifth wheels.

You should also have a torque wrench and air compressor, using both as part of your hitching up routine.

RE: Would like to avoid I-80 East

Thank all of you for your input. As I said, I took 80 last time. So we will fill the cooler and and face the road conditions on 80. When time is less of a factor I would like to make the 88 run.

Right you are. That would be the 50 or the 88 to the 395.

RE: Pickup bed/box size for towing 5th wheel?

I have an 8’ bed and am now considering an auxiliary tank. The extra length is providing me with many more options. When I bought the truck I thought a 38 gal. tank would be enough. Now I want more… Just another thing to consider.

Would like to avoid I-80 East

Going from Sacramento, CA to Boise, ID in a F350, DW, CC, long box and 32’ fiver. Just drove I-80 last month and would like to avoid it. I am considering the 50 and 88 to the 395 north back to the I-80. Thank you for your thoughts.

RE: A moral dilemma.

Just back from a trip that took us along the 101 through Oregon and Washington. We did encounter several cyclists in areas with little or no shoulder. I had to remind myself that while I like big trucks and 5th wheels, they appear to enjoy a different lifestyle. The have as much right to their hobby as I do mine. HOWEVER, upon encountering the cyclists one does run through a set of defensive driving options. Slowing down and passing when safe was option number one. However, given the option of hitting on coming traffic or nudging a cyclist off of the road I determined the cyclist would be the best option. I also determined to do my very best to make sure I would not need to make the choice. I had a great trip. I can only hope they did the same.

First long trip and some of what I learned

10.49 MPG for 3,549 mile trip
32’ is long enough, but I would take a 3rd slide
while 30 amps works, 50 would be better
my F350 DW, CC, 4x4 w/tow boss is more then enough for my rig
Dicore is to die for, don’t leave home with out it
the two 5 gallon cans of diesel were useful when we would get off the main highways
getting into RV spaces, setting up and getting out again does get easier the more times you do it
and last, all the little nuggets of information found on this forum are invaluable when on the road.
It was a great trip! We have already started planning the next one.

RE: Do I need the propane?

There are times the power goes out in the campgrounds. If you have a good generator then all is well. If not, you will be cold and hungry in no time:)

RE: California 5th Wheel Endorsement

OK so I went to our records to make sure and it was the Recreational Vehicles and Trailers Handbook. It included Noncommercial Class A Requirements, Noncommercial Class B Endorsement Requirements and the Recreational Trailer Endorsement. I did not take a visual test as my Class C was still valid. As for towing boats, they are not listed under types of recreational vehicles, however, at least one of the possible answers required an understanding of boat regulations under the Class C. Again, just make sure you know the legal GVWR for boats…

RE: California 5th Wheel Endorsement

When I went to DVV they gave me a book for non-commercial class A to review. Having done that, I called and made an appointment specifically for the RV Endorsement. I was met by a wonderful lady with years of experience behind the desk who did not know what I was talking about. I showed her in the book, indicating it was a written test and that I was not to be charged for it. I was assured there would be a fee and the supervisor was called. To the supervisor’s credit, she did know what I needed. After making a copy of the only test available I was sent to the testing area with instructions to request the supervisor after the test was scored. After returning the completed test, it was scored and the supervisor was called. I never saw the test again and know nothing of the score. I was told I passed, there would be no fee and a new picture was taken. The new license reads on the back; “41. May tow fifth wheel recreational trailer between 10001 and 15000 pounds GVWR.” I wish you the best of luck and advise you call DMV ahead and review the difference between towing boats and RVs in California.

RE: Diesel Fuel on 101 in OR and WA

I want to thank all of you for taking the time to respond. Both Reedsport and Florence have several stations selling diesel on the 101 in OR. Aberdeen will work well in WA before we hit the 90. I just wanted solid options in case we did not find fuel on the way. While our F350 is a great TV, it does not sip fuel and we enjoy ourselves much less when all we can concentrate on is the road and fuel gage…
