RE: You won't find this place with your internet search tool,,,

Actually you'll find locations pretty darn close on ForestCamping.com. Take a look at Angel Lake cg near Wells and South Ruby cg near Elko both in Nevada's Humboldt NF. Not interested in staying in a campground, dispersed campsite abound on the way.

RE: Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion

Before you get to Bryce NP, on Rt 12, there is a campground called Red Canyon (Dixie) which is one of my favorites out of the 2,400 we've been to. Why? Besides the amazing scenery all around, the hiking trails are super (Golden Wall trail would be challenge for you teenage boys while Buckhorn is great for an after dinner hike). FYI: Red Canyon cg has hot showers and a dump station and is in the heart of Butch Cassidy's stomping grounds. A visit center to the Dixie National Forest is also suggested (on the left before the cgs). I assume from the South Rim you'll be taking Rt. 89. Have you considered taking Rt 89A rather than staying on Rt 89 going through Page, AZ? It is a breath-taking drive. Make a stop at the Trading Post at Cameron, AZ (on RT 89) than pause at one of the Native American run roadside stands. Interesting contrast. If they don't have them already, you might consider getting your boys their own cameras. It would be a good way to keep them interested and provide a way for the whole family to remember this trip. In my opinion, Zion NP is way better than Bryce. That opinion is based on the hiking trails. Zion is where I learned about the effects of elevation on cooking . Took almost a half-an-hour to prepare canned hash and eggs for dinner - good memories. And you'll have a bunch from your travels too. Enjoy and if you want details about Red Canyon cg check forestcamping.com.

RE: Need help on planning for Idaho trip

Those parking aprons at Cape Perpetua must of shrunk since our visit. I'd have said they were closer to 50 ft than 25 ft. One problem was the lush vegetation - so much green this desert rat didn't know what to do with the humidity - be sure to look up for branches when backing in.

RE: Need a camp ground recommendation for Big Sur

Look into Kirk Creek cg, Los Padres NF - No hook-ups but breath-taking views. Listened to sea otters hunting in the kelp bed at sunset and woke to the sound of seabirds in the morning. Plaskett Creek cg is also nice and less rustic but the views aren't as impressive and ocean further away. Even if you don't camp at Kirk Creek cg, take a moment and visit - there was a little "beater" down to the hidden stretch of beach that was really fun to explore when we were there.

RE: Need help on planning for Idaho trip

Take a look at Baumgartner cg in Sawtooth NF, Bonnevile cg and Pine Flat cg in Boise NF all in Idaho and than there is some super Forest Service cgs in Coleville and Okonagon National Forests before you get to a whole bunch of possibilities in the national forests between Idaho and the Pacific Coast. You are looking at the campgrounds in the Siuslaw NF, right? So much to see, so little summer :-) Happy camping.

RE: Southern Nevada Fire Restrictions

Should be a warning to all camping in the Southwest area (New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and Arizona) that the fire danger is high and we should all be caution. Thanks for the heads-up.

RE: Boondocking in Montana

"Doesn't look that good in general, but I think I can find something." Really? Get yourself a Motor Vehicle User Map (MVUM) for those national forests you think you might be interested in. They should all be on-line as a .pdf files by now. The reason I make this suggest is you'll find all the areas you can boondock, even those way off the beaten path. I think you'll find your options are numerous.

RE: Host at national forest rental cabin

Thank you. I thought putting it in the Workcamping forum might mis-represent the fact this is a non-paying volunteer host opportunity.

RE: Black Hills

probably not much of a drive but have you looked at Vedauwoo cg area in the Medicine Bow NF. That cg is closed but lots of dispersed site nearby. There are also dispersed camping in the Oglala, Buffalo Gap, and Thunder Basin national grasslands. ForestCamping.com provides GPS coordinates for some disperse sites in those grasslands. Only Sundance cg, in the Black Hills NF, is official open right now but give the forest folks a call to see if anything might be available. The "official" season tends to be when the concessionaire is on-site. Sometimes, if a campground isn't gated, you can stay in it with the understanding no services, such as water and trash pick-up, are provided.

RE: Mammoth campground

It's been almost ten years since we camped there but the "new" in New Shady Rest didn't necessarily mean better. It was bigger but felt tight, compressed and we thought there were a number of campsite a TT would be challenged to get into. We stayed in Old Shady Rest and enjoyed a spacious site, abundant shade and paved walkway at the cg's entrance.

RE: Dispersed Camping

I would suggest contacting the Forest folks and ask if they have a Motor Vehicle Users Map (MVUM). Hopefully they've got in done. It shows all roads available to drive on and where dispersed camping is permitted. If I may, I would suggest Pinon campground (in the Apache NF but maintained by Gila NF) - has drinking water, vaults, a 130-acre nearby and is at 8,000-ft elevation. Technically, not dispersed but with a 15-day stay and almost unknown to most folks, I would say it just might fit the bill. FYI: Generally, the shorten stay limits reflects a location's popularity or it might be to protect the area from overuse.

RE: Suggestions For Camping Spots In Western WY

What about Granite Creek cg area in the Teton NF south of Jackson Hole? No horses permitted in the cg but give the forest folks a call for alternative sites in the area. Green Rive Lake cg in the Bridger NF is beyond fabulous but ditto on horses. In the Shoshone NF, you have two campgrounds that *Do* allow horse. They are Dead Indian and Elk Fork cgs. If you are taking I-80, consider stopping Vedauwoo cg in Medicine Bow NF. No horses in the campground but there is a ton of disperse sites very close. But be aware, you could have a visit from a local resident moose. You'll find more info about these and other cgs that are possibilities on forestcamping.com. Have a great time.

RE: Trash and dry camping/boondocking

If you are using national forest campgrounds this summer, most have dumpsters but where not, generally, local businesses, mainly gas stations, accept trash/recyclables. A bigger problem might be water. Please call ahead to confirm water is available.

RE: Any Suggestions

What about Horsethief Lake or Grizzly cgs in the Black Hills NF. There is a fee but so nice. Grizzly is on a creek a short distance from Mt. Rushmore while Horsethief Lake is within walking distance. Just a thought.

RE: dry camping around Surprise Az

Last I heard White Tank Mtn Regional Park was closed but that could have been temporary so I would give them a call for status.

RE: dry camping near Surprise AZ?

There is a national forest campground between Superior and Globe (about 4 miles east of Superior) called Oak Flat. Sixteen campsite, vault toilets, and no fee. Popular with "bouldering" folks. Give the Tonto National Forest, Globe District folks a call ((928) 402-6200) for more info.

RE: Planning trip to VT,NH,ME in October. Advice?

Have to consider the Kancamangus Hwy (SR112) -- fabulous! Jigger Johnson cg is a person fav but all the White Mtn NF campgrounds along the route are super. Reservations are probably advised. Hapgood Pond cg, in Green Mountain NF (VT) is nice. You'll be able to find some Mom & Pop maple syrup places in the area. Not exactly on the most direct route but you might want to consider Allegheny NF's Buckaloons cg. Has hook-ups and we've enjoyed some nice fall foliage there. See ForestCamping.com for details. Happy camping.

That's what I'm hoping.
