RE: Pocket Door Repair
Like hilodil said, there is a plastic cam lock. I use a slender flat blade screwdriver to lock and unlock them. One of my pocket doors guides likes to come undone during travel, so I have gotten pretty handy, not by choice, at this task.
RE: Electric Brake question
Sounds like the brakes are mechanically adjusted too tight. But first, check that your electric brake controller is set to a mid- or low- setting, and repeate the test. If you still have locking, loosen the brake shoes slightly. On my AlKo axle, this done by removing the rubber access plug, then using a flat blade screwdriver to turn the star wheel inside. Can't remember which direction to loosen the brakes. I usually turn the wheel until the brakes are tight, then back off a half turn or so.
RE: Anode Rod Broken Off
I agree, let it stay in there as Thomas/NH said. How could have gotten wedged in so tightly? If you get it unjammed, one suggestion is to use a "grabber" tool - the kind with finger grips that are used to retrieve small parts when you drop them into your engine bay, while working on a vehicle.
RE: Winter - to cover or not to cover a pop up.
I am in the camp of do not cover. In my area (near Lancaster, PA), the winter can include stretches of mild (above freezing) weather. This means moisture, which in my mind creates an opportunity for mold and mildew. To my way of thinking the downsides of a cover outweigh the benefits:
Benefits:
Less sun fading? (but how much less?)
Risks:
Mold and mildew on the cover
Mold and mildew on the exterior finish of the RV
Wind tearing the cover
Cover rubbing and chafing against the finish of the RV
So what you gain in reduced sun fading, you may lose in washing the mildew off and polishing the chafe markes. I have stored my unit outdoors, uncovered, for 5 years and don't regret it.
RE: window leak
I resealed two windows on my TT this summer, and it was straightforward. Scrape out the old sealand, and replace with a generous amount of butyl tape. I allowed the butyl to squeeze out over a two week period in the sun, then scraped the excess off, and finished it up with a neat bead of white silicone.
RE: Do I leave the battery in?
Regarding mice, we never leave a crumb of food in the unit when it is stored, not even canned or dried food, such as pasta or rice. Any hint of food will be detected by varmints, and you will never get them out.
RE: routine maintenance on slideout and levelers?
The slide on my TT is a Lippert hydraulic slide room. The manual says to operate the slide system twice per month to assure lubrication. For me, this isn't practical because my TT is in storage most of the time. Twice per year I lube the slide mechanism bearings with spray lithium grease.
For the Lippert system (2004 vintage) this is mandatory, because the bearings will seize. It happened to me one week before a camping trip. I had to remove the bearings (not easy) and work them free, lubricate, then reinstall them. Doing this procedure, lying on my back during a torrential downpour (water gushing under me) was "memorable".
PPL Motorhomes / rvdealership dot com - two thumbs up!
I am a first time customer of this online parts store, and had a great experience. I ordered two Dometic refrigerator door bins/shelves. The ordering process on the website was easy, and the order was delivered very quickly and to my satisfaction. I sent an email asking for my order status, and it was answered in less than 24 hours.
I would use them again, and highly recommend them for online parts ordering.
RE: "On The Beach" Port Aransas, TX
We stayed at Pioneer for a week between Christmas 2008 and New Year 2009. Loved it in every respect. Proximity to beach, planned activities, and location close to Port Aransas were all great. Everyone there was friendly.
Had a negative experience with the management of Gulf Waters, who have a non-customer orientation, in my view.
RE: Leaking passenger side widow
Agree with the above. I just resealed the front window on my travel trailer. It was very simple, just a little time consuming. Go slowly. Getting the window out takes a gentle touch to avoid damaging the aluminum window frame or the exterior fiberglass wall panel.
RE: trailer brake adjustment
I just did this today. Jack the wheel up. Look into the access hole, and use a flashlight (I used an LED headlamp), if needed, to see the threaded rod and star nut. Lefty loosey, righty tighty. Extending the threaded rod out of the nut increases brake drag; contracting the threaded rod relieves brake drag. Give the wheel a spin after every couple of adjustments, and you will tweak it in just fine.
Where to find sewer pipe hanger?
I'm looking for two sewer pipe hangers for 4" DWV pipe. The ones on my travel trailer have rusted and broken. I looked at Home Depot and Lowe's, in the plumbing sections, and didn't find the exact replacement, or anything I wanted to use as a substitution.
Are these hangers specific to RVs? I looked on Camping World's website, and didn't find anything. I will stop at my local RV parts store to see what they have.
Where have ya'll obtained these? Thanks.
RE: Extending the life of out TT via small repairs
If the removal and replacement is straightforward (from the photo it looks like it's just screws), I would go with new replacement fenders.
RE: Bryce and southern Utah in April
Last summer we stayed at the Glendale, UT KOA and enjoyed it very much. Good location between Zion and Bryce. Quiet, with well spaced pull through sites and convenient hookups. The staff were friendly and helpful. There are wonderful red rock hoodoo views from inside the campground. The pool was very refreshing, but in April this will probably not be on the agenda. Two thumbs up.
RE: Recommendations for an RV Park near Moab, UT?
what about paying for three nights at the KOA and only staying for two? We stayed there last July - it was wonderful. Great location, great pool, fun activities (stargazing, pancake breakfast, ice cream social, horseshoes, etc.). Really enjoyed our stay there.
RE: Corpus Christi campgrounds
We had a great time at Pioneer Beach RV Park last week. We also visited the Lex and aquarium, so the location works for Corpus.
Drove by the Mustang Island State Park and it looks pretty bare bones. We prefer to stay at facilities that have some degree of planned activities, however everyone has different needs/wants in a campground.
Wills Creek RV Park, Fort Payne, AL - two thumbs up
Stayed there as a one night stopover en route to home. Very friendly staff. She took a few minutes out of the Crimson Tide game to sign me in! ;) Too bad the Tide wasn't rollin.
Easy to access pull-through sites, good wi-fi and convenient hookups. Quiet with no highway, planes or trains noises. Easy to access from the freeway, with diesel available at the northern of the two exits off I-59.
This is a great no-frills RV park that we will visit again if the need arises.
RE: Pioneer Beach RV Park, Port Aransas, TX - two thumbs up
1951 Elmer,
We fished in the surf on three separate occasions and caught something every time. We caught 2 or 3 whiting and 2 catfish. The catfish were "hardtop", as the locals call them, and are not good eating. There is another surf catfish which is the gafftopsail catfish, with long fins and whiskers, and is good eating. The whiting is actually a Gulf Kingfish, Menticirrhus littoralis. We fried those guys in butter and were they good!
We chartered with a captain on his 27 foot center console, and he took us into the shallow back bay for redfish. My son caught a 24" redfish; big filets on that fish! I think the jetties and piers would be great, probably for catfish, black drum, and the odd redfish. I think the Port Aransas jetties would be good, particularly around the ferry. This water is kind of a pinch point for fish, so you probably have pretty good chances to catch something. We used frozen shrimp and frozen mullet for bait in the surf. You could use the same thing from the jetties.
Call Deep Sea Headquarters for more information, they are right next to the ferry landing.
