RE: Technicapped needs wireless.

I wrote an article on the RV.net blog on exactly that question ... Is 5GB/mo enough for web browsing? The answer is 'Yes' - with a couple of caveats. ..glad you liked the video about 3 ways to connect wirelessly!

RE: Technicapped needs wireless.

I want to be able to access the Internet from a laptop while we travel. I do not want to end up with $1,000 charges for service. I want it to be FAST and able to connect to the Internet from anywhere in the US and Canada. :) Oh Boy! If you find that - you need to let all of us know about it OK? We'll get there - but it's not here yet. There are three ways to connect to the Internet as you travel: Wi-Fi Satellite Cellular See this video for a short discussion of each: http://www.geeksontour.com/showme/wifi/wifi00_3ways.cfm Cellular 'aircards' are the closest thing to what you seek, but you won't be able to use it in Canada unless you're willing to spend a lot more money.

RE: Freeze Frame Photo From Video?

Picasa can also do it. Your movie is probably in My Pictures along with all the other photos from your camera. Using Picasa (free download from Picasa.Google.com) you will see the movie along with the other photos. Double click on it and it will play. From the play screen, you will see a button for 'Take Snapshot' along with the other buttons to 'Upload to YouTube' and 'Export Clip'. To fine tune which frame you want, you can move back and forth with the comma and the period keys Your captured frames will be automatically saved in the special Picasa Folder: Captured Videos.

RE: Photo and storage size

There is no easy answer to this question. Pixels are the measurement for the physical size of the image. For example, - an image that is 1200 pixels wide, when printed using 300 pixels/inch will be 4 inches wide. - An image that is 400 pixels wide, when viewed on a computer screen with 800X600 resolution will take up half the screen. The file size is determined by the number of Pixels *and* the content of those pixels. A picture of a moon in a black sky will take a lot less information to store than a picture of a girl in a multicolored dress sitting in a field of flowers. I did recently take a photo of a full moon. Basically it's a small white dot in a black photo. The pixels are 3072X2048 (multiply that and you get 6,291,456 - yep, I have a 6.3megapixel camera) But the file size of the moonshot is 1.3 Megabytes, whereas a daylight picture of a hillside with green trees, blue sky and orange pumpkins is 3.8 Megabytes even though it is the exact same 3078X2048 pixels. I only use .jpg files - it's all you need in today's online world. If you're going to publish in Professional Photographer's magazines, you may want RAW or TIFF. But .jpg is just fine for us travel bloggers.

RE: Compu do over

I too like Microsoft's Onecare free safety scanner as well as SuperAntiSpyware. It can't hurt to try. But, from what you describe as the problem and your comfort level - it may be better to take it to a Best Buy (Geek Squad) or your local computer store (Office Depot, Staples, Office Max) ... they sometimes even have special promotions offering virus cleaning for free or low fee. RE: Planning a trip with gps?

I use Streets and Trips 2010 and then send all the locations to my Garmin Nuvi via a USB cable. See the RV.net Blog http://blog.rv.net/2009/09/streets-and-trips-2010/

RE: Your opinion on Windows 7 compared to XP

Basically, Windows 7 is an upgrade to Vista. Switching from XP to Win7 will have the same learning curve as switching from XP to Vista. See our article: Should you Upgrade to Windows 7 We also have a series of 'Show-Me-How' Videos on Vista. Please, everyone watch the free video called # 1 Favorite Feature of Vista: Search If you use the Search feature in Vista/Win7 you'll never miss XP!

RE: Wmwifirouter Report

Thanks for the great report! Just curious, did you compare www.walkinghotspot.com (sounds like the same thing as wmwifirouter)? If so, what made you choose wmwifirouter? Checking the websites, it appears they have a somewhat different list of supported devices: WMWiFiRouter supported devices WalkingHotSpot supported devices

RE: Verizon Mobile Broadband Connect (tethering) Unlimited Data

The 5GB tethering plan (Verizon - Mobile Broadband Connect) is now $49.99. Down from 59.99 about a month or two ago. Wouldn't that be nice *if* that reduction was in preparation for a $59 unlimited plan :-) btw - if you're still paying $59 for 5GB tethered, I think you have to specifically ask for the reduced price.

RE: Need New Free Website

At GoDaddy.com you can buy a domain name for $10/year and it you can get a free hosting account to go with it. Your pages will have ads on them ... but I think that was true with geocities too, wasn't it? The problem with sites.google.com is they don't offer ftp, so there would be no way to upload your existing files.

RE: Telephone & Broadband

ooops - yes, I meant thru Canada. In thinking of going 'to' Alaska, all I think of is the Alcan highway. Thanks for correcting me. I also hear that Wi-Fi is widely available.

RE: Telephone & Broadband

We use Verizon service and LG enV phone. We tether it for Broadband at $49/mo and we can turn it off when we have good Wi-Fi. See video about tethering for Broadband.. If you don't want to tether, I'd go for the Mi-Fi - data card and router all in one tiny package. More info in this article. If you're going to Alaska - that's a problem though. Verizon roaming charges will be off the charts. Wi-Fi there.

RE: Help!!! Sharing tethered internet connection

Chris that cell phone hot spot blog is interesting. Thanks! If you think that's interesting - check out www.walkinghotspot.com The first time someone told me about it, I started to correct her .. she must be mistaken ... what she said she had couldn't be done .. it wasn't possible. Then she showed me. Wow. It is just software - $29 one-time charge. You need a smart phone running Windows Mobile software - because what it's doing is Internet Connection Sharing. That eliminates Verizon and it eliminates iPhone. So it's not for everyone. But ... if you have a qualifying phone with it's own *unlimited* data plan ... $29 is all it will cost to whare that internet connection as a Walking Hotspot! Your cell phone becomes the modem *and* the router. With unlimited Internet access ... for no extra charge. You won't be hearing much about this from the cell carriers! I've mentioned it to a few others who have written back to me that they got it and they love it. *Almost* makes me want to switch to AT&T.

RE: Help!!! Sharing tethered internet connection

Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is not a simple thing to set up - see this RV.net article:Cell Phone Internet Hot Spot for a taste. We strongly recommend using a router instead. We use the Cradlepoint cellular router. Our cell phone tethers to that, and now we have a Wi-Fi hotspot inside our coach. Just plug the router into electric, plug the cell phone into the router, connect the computer to the wireless network. SO easy! Or, better yet - get the Verizon Mi-Fi This is a data card and router all in one, tiny package. Just turn it on and you have a Wi-Fi hotspot. You can even carry it in your pocket.
