RE: Kingdome/Directv question

Thank you for the help. We now have satellite.

Kingdome/Directv question

We have a new to us MH with Kingdome (model 9702 I think). I am totally unfamiliar with the workings of the Kingdome and found the paperwork that came with the MH less than helpful. I ordered a second Directv receiver (model D12-700C-R)for use in the bedroom and MH. The installer set up the receiver in the bedroom and paired it up with the HD receiver/recorder already in the house. After he left, I took the receiver out to the MH and hooked it up. The connections were well marked so I am comfortable that it is hooked up right. I do see the Directv screen on the TV. I held the on button on the Kingdome for 4 seconds as directed on the box. It flashes green and red for a couple seconds and then flashes red. By sound, it is searching, just never finds anything. After about 12-15 minutes I turned it off for fear of burning the motor up. How long should it take to find the satellite? Is there something else I should do or be aware of?

RE: Any LEO retired or currently sworn here!

A little late to the thread, congrats on your success so far. I am 26 year LEO, now retired. When it comes to the training, know what is important and make decisions accordingly and then be ready to explain why you acted/reacted the the way you did. On PT and tactics never, ever give up. That will get you washed out quickly. Have fun, your life experiences give you a real advantage.

RE: StoreMore Slideout System

I have seen several people mention they did not want the storage that comes out with the slide because they wanted pass thru storage. I may be wrong but I believe that pass thru storage requires a rear engine/raise rail configuration. On front engine MH's the drive line runs thru the area that would be pass thru storage.

Thousand Trails ??

We are looking at MH to purchase. The owner is willing to throw in his TTN Gold membership as part of the sale. How do I find out what it would cost to transfer and maintain (dues?) the membership as well as what the membership would entitle us to??

HERE is a link to a great baked bean recipe. These are a little work, but are really good. I have made these in a crock pot.

Insurance/budget question?

DW and I are soooo ready to get on the road. Property values are really slow coming back in our part of the world and we are looking at our budget again, trying to determine when we can safely pull the trigger. We know what our costs will be in most areas. Just have no idea what FT'ers insurance will run and what it costs to insure a motor home. I understand that insurance is location specific, and your numbers won't be my numbers necessarily. I hope with you help to put a reasonably accurate number on my spreadsheet. Our info: Based out of Arizona for the next 3-4 yearsCouple year old Class A, expect to spend 180,000-200,000 Registration I can compute based on the State's DMV web site. Just have no idea what it costs to insure a MH of that value or what fulltime insurance will run. If you are comfortable sharing your costs for these items (especially fellow Arizonans) it would be helpful. Thanks all!

RE: Free Ebooks

Don't forget your local library. Most have a decent selection of current books. The public domain books are great, you just won't get current authors.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Working on the numbers, just trying to convince myself we can afford to pull the plug and hit the road.

RE: Forum Conduct.... Again

As a forum member still in the "Knowledge absorption" mode, I know I fall in the asking repetitive question group at times. In my defense, the search function is not real strong on this site. I come here because the high activity here guarantees my post will be viewed many time and I will get good responses almost every time - and quickly! Whenever you have this many people active on a site you will get keyboard courage. Some will respond in a manner they wouldn't dream of doing in a face to face situation. It's unfortunate, but it is human nature. I will continue to post here with my questions and hopefully, in the future with answers (when I know sumpin' worth sharing). This is still the best place to learn and share and I appreciate the effort made by those who take the time to respond and the moderators as well. Definitely a thankless job.

RE: Will PPACA change you FTing plans?

If you'd like to keep politics out, you might remove "Obamacare" from the thread title... The term was coined as a pejorative and is used/perceived by many in just that way! I was not trying to be derogatory. It was in parentheses for clarity. Just wasn't sure that everyone would know what The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was. Besides, I believe the President himself said he likes the term. Just like some would not know what the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 and the Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003 are, but say the Bush tax cuts and everyone knows what you are talking about.

RE: Will PPACA change you FTing plans?

It appears that it will affect us negatively. Previous retirees were able to keep company insurance as a medicare supplement if they remained seasonal employees. That was what we intended to do. Now we find out the the company will no longer offer any insurance supplement after age 65 due to Obamacare. Sorry to hear it will negatively impact you. They also are considering making cuts to the insurance for full time employees. Supposedly it will be far less expensive for the company to pay the fines than to provide insurance in some cases. A similar trend has been going on for years, with large companies replacing full time employees with part time employees to avoid paying for insurance and other full time benefits. This could be a really valuable thread, I hope it doesn't get closed for being political. Agreed. The intent was to get a conversation going and hopefully share info. I am still trying to figure out exactly what it will mean for us. I Hope we will be able to keep emotions and politics out. It just hits so many of us at gut level.

RE: Will PPACA change you FTing plans?

I wouldn't make plans to spend that $12,000 savings just yet. Never spend it before I have it. So yes, you take advantage of whatever the government offers you; that only makes sense for you. Just realize: it can't go on like this. I have been saying that for years. Health care costs have been out of control for years and getting exponentially worse. The system was already broke and it was only a matter of time before it crashed. Obama care has lots of issues, but is now the law. Hopefully more level heads will prevail and the issues causing spiraling costs can be addressed ( like tort reform and interstate competition for insurance companies, to name a couple) and the law can be tweaked to make it work. The alternative is pretty scary.
