RE: Full Metal Jackrabbit or Retrax?

Ive got the jackrabbit on mine. This is the second one I've owned in 6 years. Neither one gave me a problem at all. I just cleared 4" of wet snow of mine. Not flex at all. They have both worked as low as 40 below without freezing. Cheers Chris

RE: Choices for side-entry Toyhaulers?

... was the lack of a ceiling fan for ventilation. What are they like in the heat of summer, without using the AC? I agree that the Cougar seems very well designed for my purpose and the price is right at just over $38K. What about a tow vehicle? Is a 3/4 ton sufficient? I tow with a one ton Dave. When I bought the truck it was virtually the same price as a 3/4 ton but the PST was only 7% instead of 10% on the 3/4 and I wasn't sure of which trailer we might buy. I weighed mine with full tanks and all our equipment in it at 11,900 lbs this summer. I think most 3/4 tons can handle that. The hottest we were in last summer was over 90 F. We didn't have power and had been running the genset a lot so I was trying to save propane for the last evening we were there. It was okay with all the windows and both the doors open. Cheers Chris

RE: Overheard in the woods during deer season

I grew up in the Berkshire Mountains of Western Mass, in the 1960's. It was not unusual for dairy farmers in the area to paint, in bright orange, COW on the sides of their dairy cows. This was to help prevent hunters from shooting them during deer hunting season!!! Every year, a few dairy cows would be mistaken for deer and shot! Scary! People with high powered guns not knowing the difference between a dairy cow and a deer. I grew up in Northern Ontario. A local farmer also painted COW on the side of his horse because he didn't want to confuse them.

RE: Choices for side-entry Toyhaulers?

Hi Dave:- We have a Cougar 310SRX. It's a mid range 5vr but so far no problem with build quality. The only thing I had to change was the drawers tend to come out if you do something sudden. I was cutoff in Edmonton last summer and had to hit the brakes hard. The two drawers that face forward came out and spilled on the floor. I added an extra catch on each and haven't had a problem since. We use our garage to haul equipment, not vehicles. I would think the ramp might be a bit steep for a big bike. Make sure the interior length of the garage will accomodate the length of the bike. It's not a short trailer at almost 37ft long but I haven't had a problem towing it or parking it. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions. Cheers Chris

RE: Another scam warning

I`m located in Montreal(the car is here with me) right now because i got a new job here, the thing is i`m very busy and i don`t have time to stay and meet with all my potential buyers, that is why i gave to a shipping company that will ship it to the next owner(on my cost), so i'm trying to sell it online under eBay`s protection. Here is how it works : The sale will be managed through eBay under their Vehicle Purchase Protection program.... She was in Whitehorse when I answered an ad in the truck trader for my son. I responded asking for the phone number and address so my buddy in Whitehorse could come and see it. Her answer was that the shipping company had it in storage and it could not be viewed. She did offer to ship it for free because she had a coupon from the freight company. AS has been stated before - "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is" Cheers Chris

RE: Real world gas mileage?

Makes me feel good cause CDN gallons are bigger. 25 Mpg on the highway with only the two of us. 5'vr is about 11,500 loaded and can range from 12 to 15 mpg depending on whether we are in the mountains or the prairies. Cheers Chris

It's $.87.9 today in Prince George at the Flying J and the Husky across the road. Cheers Chris That's gasoline, not for diesel. No that's for diesel. Gas went down to $ 1.02 yesterday Chris

RE: VHF radios

Are these VHF 108 Mhz to 174 Mhz because as far as I know Industry Canada still requires a license over 100 milliwatt and they are assigned just like my 69 BC logging channels and 18 Alberta including my own assigned to my area. Travel many logging roads and yes even without permission they appreciate proper communication on dangerous roads to prevent collisions. Care to share the list? Some radio stores will sell you anything but this does not mean you are legal to use it. I am not sure what list you are asking about. List of what? and yes..you hit the nail on it's head..the radio power is the key. The ones a person buys from a comm shop produce 5 watts output...5 miles maybe. Gary Haupt Most of the VHF radios in use in the bush are 30 watts in the 150 to 174 MHZ range. Most of the logging or resource roads are radio controlled. Each road has a frequency assigned to it that is announced on a sign at the entrance to the road. Everyone calls their miles as they travel on the road so everyone knows where the others are. For general communications there are four LADD channels with LADD One being the most popular. LADD One is 154.100 MHZ This is from the Industry Canada (CDN version of the FCC) website. Industry Canada (IC) has recently approved the four LADD Channel Frequencies for Radio Licensing. Companies or individuals with only one or two radios no longer have to wait for a letter of permission from an existing radio channel holder in order to license their radios. Their radio supplier can apply with IC in their behalf for the use of 154,100Mhz (Ladd-1), 158.940Mhz (Ladd-2), 154.325Mhz (Ladd-3) and 173.370Mhz (Ladd-4) in their IC approved VHF radios. Larger companies may apply for a commercial (shared) channel frequency if they have many mobile vehicles needing to be dispatched from an office base station. Individual users need a general radio operating license, but a lot of users don't have one. I have 3 of the LADD channels and about 40 of the various road channels. Also a lot of the road construction companies use LADD One for their flag people. Cheers Chris

RE: Canadian Campground Pics

We just got back from five great days in Barkerville. Barkerville and Wells are an hour east of Quesnel. The ghost town was restored and includes many displays and live street performances in the town site. http://www3.telus.net/photos-now/barkerville-street.jpg We stayed at Cariboo Joy campsite. The owner Joy is a wonderfull person. It's not a big city campground but it is serviced and quirky. http://www3.telus.net/photos-now/cariboojoy1.jpg It's only 5 minutes from Barkerville and right on the edge of Wells which has a great artist's community with some giftshops and galleries. Wells is small which makes for an easy walking experience. http://www3.telus.net/photos-now/cariboojoy2.jpg It's well worth the hour drive off Highway 97. Cheers Chris

RE: Cougar 300SRX Toy Hauler

For those of you who own one of these trailers, can you comment on the good, the bad and the ugly? Any other comments are welcome also. We have a 2008 cougar 310srx. It's the 5vr version. The garage is the same layout as ours. It's perfect for us. The only real problem we had was the drawers coming out while travelling. I added extra catches and everything seems fine now. I didn't move the ramp support legs at first and we ended up with loose screws where the ramp and the foldout part meet. I put the legs in so the supports hold up the door and the foldout ramp together and everything works fine. The door is heavy, it could use more springs. We bought it for the smaller garage and side door. We haul our photo equipment in it so didn't need a lot of space. There is three of us travelling to shows so the second bedroom is great. The rest of the trailer is very livable and it tows like a dream. I have not had any major issues with it. The design is not for everyone but we have had a lot of positive comments from those of us in the dog show world. Cheers Chris

RE: A nice parking lot for camping

At the Columbia Ice fields in Alberta. Cost us $10.80 for the night, which was fine because we did not fit into any nearby camp site. The view was priceless. Great view - and it's free on the second weekend of May, mind you it was a bit cool -9C but there was only two of us in the parking lot. http://www3.telus.net/photos-now/Icefields-overnight.jpg the morning show was well worth it. http://www3.telus.net/photos-now/icefields-morning.jpg As far as I am concerned that is one of the best drives in the world. RE: Which route through Canada going to alaska?

Anybody care to share their thoughts on the more popular route or the less traveled Cassiar highway route? Lots of Alaska bound travellers go north one way and south the other. The Cassiar is a little bit rougher but not enough to miss the scenery. If you are coming back in late July or early August it is always good to go south on the Cassiar so you can stop at Hyder to see the bears. The trip into Stewart/Hyder is spectacular with the bear glacier and the trip up to the Salmon Glacier is worth the time. Here's a quick shot of the Bear Glacier http://www3.telus.net/photos-now/BearGlacier.jpg Check out going north one way and south the other. Cheers Chris

RE: May long weekend 2009?

We were in Fort St John for the long weekend. It was cold and we had one day of snow on Saturday. We left at 8:30 monday night to head back to PG. Roads were good until we got into the Pine Pass. We overnighted at the rest stop on the north end of the pass because it was starting to snow. Woke up at 5:30 to continue south to 2" of snow everywhere. The snow cleared up about 10km south and was wet but clear until we started to climb to the summit. A couple of inches and blowing snow until we descended into the Mackenzie Junction. The road was wet but snow free until about 40 clicks north of PG then snow all the way to home. It's all gone now and was pretty warm today. What happened to global warming, I've been looking forward to it. Gotta love living in the north. Cheers Chris

RE: A propane question for Canadians

I've always found that buying the propane by the pound is more expensive than buying it by the liter. And in Prince George it varies a lot for filling a bottle. One place charged me $ 18.95 to fill a 20lb bottle and another charged me $ 15.00 to fill a 30lb and some stations only charge for what you put in the tank, others charge for a full tank even if you only take 1/2, the charge is to fill it up, not for a set amount of propane. If they would let me I would prefer to fill my bottles by liters rather than by the pound. Cheers Chris

RE: Tr 93 permits required

Found this info online, and as I noted, we broke the rules when DH stopped for that pee in the rest area, even though he used the facilities in the fifth wheel ... You do not have to pay a national park entry fee if you will not be stopping in the national parks. Not stopping in the national parks is defined as keeping all four wheels of your vehicle on the paved part of the TransCanada Highway (Hwy #1) if you are going via Banff and Lake Louise or the paved part of the Yellowhead Highway (Hwy #16) if you are going via Jasper. If you pull off the highway to look at the view, to take a photo, to fill up with gas, to have a meal, that is defined as stopping. Although you may travel for free on Hwy #1 or Hwy #16 (provided you don't stop), you do have to have a national park pass to travel on the Icefields Parkway (Hwy #93) between Lake Louise and Jasper, regardless of whether or not you stop on the Icefields Parkway. Hi Sue:- The OP asked about HWY #93 (icefields parkway) You can go through on the Transcanada or the Yellowhead and not pay. They've installed ticket booths on the parkway if you try to cheat and tell them at Jasper entrance or Banff entrance that you are going through. Interesting that the ticket booth is about 300 yards from the entrance to the ski hill in Jasper. So if you are going skiing and staying in Jasper they will get their pound of flesh. Cheers Chris

RE: keystone schematics

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one frustrated with this situation. I don't want to drop the underbelly right now, so I will have to wait until I have time in August to do that. Oltroll - did it help to add the insulation to the unit? What kind did you put in? Cheers Chris
