RE: Victoria Day Weekend - Who's camping?

Yup - we are off to Fort St. John for a dog show. Should be 30 or 40 rigs boondocking in the parking lot of the community centre in Taylor, just south of Fort St John. Always fun and lots of social time at a show.

RE: Trip to Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper: advice?

Thanks Paulj, those sites were very helpful! Anybody else get their 28Ft.+ trailer into Wilcox Creek?? (site recomends under 27ft). Natl. Info. Services did verify that both Banff & Jasper charge a daily service fee of $8.30/person/day. The Natl. Discovery Pass cost $57.90/senior and is good for one year to all Natl. parks and waives those daily entry fees. I drove through Wilcox creek last year to see if I could get my 5vr in there. It would be tight, more problem with trees close to the road. Best bet is to unhitch at the Icefields center a couple of KM from Wilcox and drive through to see if you can make it. If not you can camp at the icefields center campground. It is a big parking lot and they charge for you to stay but at least a big rig can get in there. As to the fees you will pay $ 19.60 per day for a family group in one vehicle. If you are staying more than 7 days the yearly pass is a better deal. $ 136.40. Both passes give you access to any national park in Canada. Camping fees range from $ 10.80 to $ 38.20 per day. Here's the link to park fees in Jasper. I'm pretty sure they are the same in Banff. Jasper Fees Even with the high fees the trip is worth every penny. We go at least four times a year. Some year we are going to go and take at least two weeks to do the Icefields parkway and go on as many hikes as we can. Have a good trip. Cheers Chris

RE: Quick Connect Water Hose Adapters?

I've had a quick connect on my black tank flush for four years now. No problem with it and it does save time hooking the flush hose up when dumping. Also no leaks like when I had to thread the hose in each time. Go ahead and do it, won't cause any problems.

RE: Back From Canada

We bought our fifth wheel from a dealer in Kelowna. After the delivery inspection we went right to a RV Park for four days and did wine tours. We try and go to do tours and buy wine of course, every year. Some of the best wines are from the small wineries that only sell on site. They don't make enough to supply the big markets so only sell at the winery. We also found that some of the wineries have small batch wines for sale that don't make it into the supply lines. We went in September when there were less people on the tours. Going on wine tours in the area is a great way to spend some time. Hopefully we can get to Napa Valley soon. Cheers Chris

RE: Rest stops near Victoria Bc

I just talked to the Blackball office. In the summer as long as we are there before 10:00Pm and have a reservation we can stay in the lot. That works for us as we want to be on the 6:10am ferry. thanks for the help everyone. Now all we need to do is finalize the plans and the camping on the Washington and Oregon coast. Cheers Chris

Rest stops near Victoria Bc

We are in Campbell river for the August long weekend. Thinking of catching the blackball early on the Tuesday. We are finished in Campbell river around 5:00 pm. I'd like to find a rest stop or overnight spot near Victoria so we can catch the 6 o'clock Blackball. Does anyone have a recommendation where can stop? Cheers Chris

RE: Jasper park all booked up in one minute?

Here's the answer I got from Parks Canada. "Camping in the Canadian National Parks has become increasingly more popular. Each year the National Parks welcomes new and returning customers, creating more of a demand for the most popular parks and sites. Many customers were in attempts of booking online and in the call centre for their desired summer stays. Long weekends are the most popular time to camp, with this in mind, these dates book very quickly. When reserving online, or in the call centre, once a site is selected, the system allows you 15 minutes to complete the reservation. A hold is placed on the site showing as booked to all other customers. This is why the site availability showed as booked when you were speaking with a representative." So does that mean that if a caller is looking at a number of sites and then books one the others are locked for the 15 minutes. We called again on the ninth and got five sites in the same loop. Mind you it is the government and doesn't have to make sense. Anyhoo we are going to Jasper for July 1st. Should be a good summer. Cheers Chris

RE: Jasper park all booked up in one minute?

We called at 8:00am mountain time on April 3rd. We were told there were no sites available, let alone 5 together, less than a minute after bookings began. That's why my question. I can't see how they booked 600 sites in less than a minute. I don't know why the system is showing sites available now. Saturday evening the system showed no sites available. Going to call again today to see if anything has changed. Thanks for the comments, still hoping to be in Jasper for July 1st.

RE: Jasper park all booked up in one minute?

They can be booked online but only one site at a time. We needed five together. It takes about ten minutes to fill out the form and select your site. So booking on line won't work.

Jasper park all booked up in one minute?

We tried to book sites for July 1st at Whistlers in Jasper. Phoned at 8:00 am when the bookings opened. We could not get a reservation cause they were all booked at 8:01 I know July 1st is a big day but how do they book 600 sites in under a minute? Maybe imissing something - has anyone booked before the official time and got a reservation so I know for next year? Cheers Chris

RE: First trip of the season Ucluelet 4 nights

We went to Ucluelet and Tofino 2yrs ago with our 5'r and can't wait to go back. The scenery is amazing and the trip in was my kind of road. I envy your trip this early. We still have almost 3ft of snow. Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers Chris

RE: If you could change anything about your 5er

Next time no built in genset. It uses too much propane and isn't that quiet. Next one will be a Honda 3000.

RE: Steam Locomotive

I am the engineer that is all. I am just trying somehow to put out information on something to see in Prince George. Seamutt - I can't thank you and the other volunteers enough. We enjoy the little train so much in the summer. Sometimes we can even hear the whistle at our house. You guys do a great job of keeping the little engine going. It is a great attraction for P.G. Cheers Chris

Everyone is going home!

I drove from Prince George to Burns Lake yesterday and counted 82 rvs heading east on highway 16. Looks like everyone is heading home from Alaska. I hope everyone had a great time. Thanks for coming and enjoying our great province on your way north and back. I always like seeing the diversity of rigs. Come back soon! Cheers Chris

RE: oh, just bored...

I just watched the video on your blog. Braeburn has not changed since I was last there in the 70's We used to get one cinnamon bun to go after eating the huge cheeseburgers. That bun would last us almost all the way to Dawson. Thanks for the memory Gary.

RE: Snakes in the desert?

Thanks for all the replys. I will definitely do more research on cactus and coyotes. Looks like we will have to be a lot more careful than I anticipated. Cheers Chris

Snakes in the desert?

We are hoping to snowbird for the first time next winter. The plan is to spend most of the time in Arizona and New Mexico on the Blm lands. We have two miniature poodles we travel with. I take them to the big dog park here all the time so they can run free. If we are in the desert and let them run, what's the chance we might run into snakes or other dangerous critters? Our one girl is really curious and would go to investigate if she found something. Thanks for any help. Cheers Chris

RE: cougar toy hauler

The garage has a double bed that folds down and single upper bunk the dinette makes into a double and the couch is a hide a bed. So total of nine but you would have to be really close friends to handle that many. Three or four in ours gets tight at times.

RE: cougar toy hauler

Should be no problem with that kind of stuff. As well when you are on site you can use the beds in the garage for the kids. Cougar is a midline quality but we have had no problems with ours and we average 50 to 60 nights a year usually with 3 of us and four dogs, 2 standard poodles and 2 minis. Cheers Chris.
