RE: Gulf State Park

Probably won't let you grab it unless you register and pay for the site separately when you get there.
As I remember, they have you go in and pick a site, do all the paperwork and pay for it before you go drive around looking for empty sites. If you decide on a different available site, you have to go through the entire process again, e.g. paperwork and payment (different sites have different rates). Seems kind of dumb to me, but that is how they do it.
Most Alabama State Parks require/want some equipment set up on the site immediately, so someone else driving through doesn't think the site is vacant and try to register for it.
A reservation really doesn't guarantee you anything other than that they will have a space available (out of 500) when you come in. Makes it sort of tough if you are trying to get your friends on the site next to yours.
Great park. We will probably be there mid to late June.

RE: St Joseph SP

Shady Pines is more prone to host mosquitoes than Gulf Breeze, just because of the close vegetation.
If you get a Shady Pines site, get one on the west side (closest to the beach) and you may be able to catch some of the breeze. The east side is really stifling hot in the summer.

RE: Long term site rental at state park

My parents stayed full-time along with about a dozen other senior campers in a state park here in Alabama, without working for the park unless they wanted to.
I think it is really a Park Manager's call. Ask them; the worst that can happen is they say no.
That being said, the park has over 500 sites and they were in a "non-prime" (not waterfront) site. Only during Boy Scout Jambaree did the park ever go into the overflow area.

Opps! Didn't look to see where you were coming from.
Ft. Clinch is great but it might be out of your way to get home to Kentucky.

Ft. Clinch State Park in Fernandina Beach.
Not too far off I-95, but you may be too late already to get into the oceanside camping area.

RE: Foscue COE Park Fans Alabama

We go to Foscue every year for President's Day; yes in February.
Only sites 49-52 actually front the river, although quite nice all the rest are on a slough off the river.
We always get site 49 since we have dogs and it is against the boundary fence and has a lot of room for the dogs. Good walking and bicycling area throughout the campground and day use areas.
The best part of the campground is watching or hearing the barges go up and down the river, some years with snow and ice on them and others quite warm (last year). Spiked hot chocolate by the fire is great relaxation.
The "beach" on site 52 is more like a mud flat, you can sink up to your ankles in it if it has been rainy.

RE: Alabama RV Parks

Although most Alabama State parks have a two week limit, I know that Wind Creek State Park did allow some full-time camping on some off-water sewer sites. My parents stayed with their camper for several years, even when they were not working part-time for the park.
Based on that experience, if a state park will work for your needs (sewer, etc) you should check with the park manager to see if they will allow it.

RE: Gulf State Park??

They did have an informational sign up about firewood imports last weekend, but I did not read it because I didn't bring any.
Call the park office and ask them; they are always quite friendly in responding to questions.

RE: Gulf State Park??

I always keep leveling materials in the trailer so it is not something I wish I had brought.
Saying that, I have not used any leveling materials in the two times I have been to GSP. I think that when they redid everything after Ivan, they were pretty concientious about doing it right so they made sure everything was level.
Your parking pad and the table/sitting area are paved at GSP, so you don't need to worry about bringing your carpet unless you want to.
One small thing, if you want a campfire you need to bring a fire pit with you. They don't have fire rings on the sites.

RE: Gulf State Park??

We arrived there on Sunday about 1pm.
We got site 496 (or 296) which is on the canal at the very end, so we could fish and walk to the beach. There is a footbridge just above the traffic circle that doesn't show on the maps, so you can get out there easily.
The waterside canal sites were never completely full, but you can't fish from all of them due to the reeds at the bank.
We did get to see several alligators and a bobcat while we were sitting in our campsite. Lots of birds.

RE: Christmas week camping on east coast

We were at Huntington Beach SP just south of Myrtle Beach last Christmas and the weather was quite mild. It was not very crowded and you get to pre-select your site upon registration.
I believe that Myrtle Beach was having some sort of Christmas Festival that they have each year but we did not go.

RE: Gulf State Park??

We just got back from a week at Gulf State Park yesterday.
What I did to pre-identify potential sites before arrival was to look at Google Maps to figure out which sites met out needs (waterfront versus pool versus bathhouse, versus walk to beach). Since I wanted to fish from my campsite, I looked for sites on the satellite view that did not have a lot of reeds growing along the bank that would allow me to fish (unsuccessfully). I then took the campground map and counted over from an identifiable landmark) to get the site number.
When I went in, I had 7-8 sites in mind and prioritized. First two weren't available, but got #3.
That saves you having to go back and re-enter site information at registration upon set-up. They don't really want you to drop your trailer on an empty site before going back to re-register. I guess if they are tight on sites, they COULD give the site to someone standing behind you. They were not 50% full all of last week.
Enjoy your time there, we sure did!

We liked Mistletoe State Park, just east of Ft. Gordon exits; on a nice lake and away from the city.

RE: Florida Gulf Coast north of Tampa

As someone mentioned, it sort of depends on the wave/storm action in the area; e.g. it can be hit or miss.
We have seen the most hits at St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, but be aware that scallop season is some time in September so reservations may be tough to come by if that is when you will be leaving.
Have never found much in the way of shells at Henderson Beach SP in Destin, but it is a good park for beach.

RE: Orange Beach, Alabama

I would go with Gulf State Park; it is huge. Their reservation website will tell you how many sites they have available for your date of arrival. Since it is not site specific the only day you are concerned with is the first one, for the duration of your stay. No issues with moving to another site part way through your stay.
Snowbirds don't usually arrive until after Thanksgiving, so they shouldn't be an issue at that time.

RE: Question about Hunington Beach State Park, SC

We stayed there last Christmas week and it was only about 25% full. It was a mild period and we only ran the heater once.
The sites are large and the park is well maintained.
If you are planning on spending most of your time going to the beach, make sure to reserve a site close to one of the two beach access points. Great area for bicycle riding, both on or off the beach.

RE: Florida Beach State Park

First of all, we are beachaholics with no kids to entertain and realize that we have to pack everything that we will need once we go through Port St. Joe.
We love St. Joseph Peninsula because we just walk the beach, sit and read on the beach, or just do nothing on the beach. I agree with the previous poster, there are some spots (particularly in the Shady Pines area that are impossible to get into with our 30' TT. It is generally much easier on the Ocean Breeze side. Don't stay in Shady Pines during the summer, the undergrowth cuts out any chance of a breeze and the bugs are worse than Ocean Breeze.
We will be back at SJP for Thanksgiving this year.
Henderson Beach is where we will spend Christmas week this year and is a good park if you like off-the-beach activities or entertainment. We do all the things that we do at SJP but with a view of condos at each end of the park beach. A little longer boardwalk to the beach, but not much. Some sites on the northern edge may have some highway noise but it has never been bothersome to us.
Never stayed at Grayton because DW doesn't count lakeside as beach. Her I have to live with, so I try not to aggravate her!:)

RE: Topsail/Florida or Gulf Shore State Park/Alabama

We just got back from Gulf Shores yesterday, our first trip camping there.
The sites along the canal, #469-496, are the closet to the beach. The campground map doesn't show it, but there is a trail from the State Park Road 2 into those sites coming in at the traffic circle by 496. Maybe 75 yards from trail to beach walkway.
What we did realize after we were set up; if you select a site on the right hand side of the road (most of the roads run east/west) your camper blocks the afternoon sun but you get morning sun. On the left side of the road you get afternoon sun; so if the weather is cool in October (which I doubt) you may want the afternoon sun.
Got all three networks on antenna, two full time weather channels, some cartoon channels, and several religious channels.
BTW, no campfire rings in camp sites but you can bring a portable fire pot if you want a campfire. No need in summer but we always want one in the fall and winter campgrounds.
Have fun.
